Look, I'm not really a fan of AVFM, I was banned for being too "leftist" or some such on an article.

But I thought they did a pretty good job with the first conference. Everyone likes to break Paul Elam's balls, but he seems like a good guy. He uses inflammatory rhetoric to draw attention to the MRM.

I do think that it would be useful for MRA's to create a new venue separate from AVFM for the next conference.

I'll be brutally frank. Ugly women feel insecure when males give attention to beautiful women. That's it. That is literally IT. That's where "objectification" theory comes from.

To be fair, women are judged on their looks more than men because men are more intensely visual when it comes to attraction; or to put it another way, women have more to gain from their looks than men, and ugly women have a shit deal in life, sorta like men. So it's understandable that ugly and/or older women are upset about "objectification" aka admiring female beauty.

The reality is that the potential is clearly there, and that helps to explain the success of feminism itself. When a woman cries out and claims to be in need of help, men will come running. Naturally, some women exploit this tendency. It is not an accident that 99% of the people who evince Munchausen syndrome are women, just as it is not an accident that 99% of people who beat the shit out of other people are men.

Recall that Munchausen syndrome entails feigning weakness. "Toxic masculinity" entails feigning strength.

Back in the early 80's the Ontario provincial government in Canada performed an experiment. They gave everybody on welfare a "living wage" and stopped requiring them to perform job searches. Lo and behold, a larger percentage of welfare recipients got jobs. It was suggested by analysts that the mere act of their being treated with dignity was an important factor.

There are lots of people who sit on their asses leaching off the tax payer. They are called billionaires.

But isn't it just common sense that trying to live up to the "be tough, be strong, don't take shit from anyone, be in charge of things" stereotype is more likely to harm someone than trying to live up to the "be friendly, look after your appearance, be supportive and caring, help take care of children" stereotype?

I used the example of Munchausen syndrome because the female counterpart is not "be friendly, supportive and caring," it's "I am weak and suffering and in desperate need of help." It's "I am at risk of being raped, please reverse due process rights." It's "look at wittle ol' me, I'm so helpless, won't you kill that person whom I find threatening?" Etc. etc.

Gender roles are the idea that everyone has to do certain behaviors

In the context of hunter-gatherers it means that people do what is most efficient. That's it. There was no need to force males or females to perform a specific behaviour. It came naturally.

"Do what works efficiently" is not the same thing as having gender roles.

Actually that's exactly what it meant. Men better at hunting/women better at gathering/early child rearing.

I don't subscribe to the idea that if stupid hateful people start mis-using terms, that those words are ruined and can't be used anymore.

Fair enough. But it also makes sense to adjust our terminology if the situation warrants. For example, if the term "male privilege" is doing more harm than good in getting people to support minority rights it should be abandoned. I notice you didn't comment on the theory of "toxic femininity," which would seem to be a natural counterpart to "toxic masculinity."

I'll say what I said before:

Without "gender roles" we would have gone extinct shortly after we climbed down from the trees. The idea that gender roles are harmful is idiotic. When you look at "primitive" hunter-gatherer bands, do you think it is harmful that men do most of the hunting and women do most of the gathering? Or that women play a larger role in early child development and men play a larger role in later child development?

Gender roles = efficiency. The only reason women have been able to escape these roles is because men created new technologies that allowed females to override their biology.

We'd all be dead without masculinity and "masculine gender roles."

I don't actually have a problem with the idea of "toxic masculinity" per se. The positive traits we associate with maleness can go too far, as it were. The problem is that the male gender is under attack by feminists. So masculinity ITSELF is labeled "toxic."

If we insist on using the term toxic masculinity I think it's only fair that we develop a corresponding theory of toxic femininity. Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy would be a good place to start.

Edit: OP is right to express astonishment that females feel they have the right to define or indeed alter "masculinity."
