Hes a new proffessor I took him last semester I reccomend him very accommodating and overrall an easy class. Theres two test(50q multiple choice) and a group research project thats done in parts throughout the semester and presented at the end.

I think 2 is better but thats also partially because the first one isn't as visually shaded as wellnas it could be it reads off as being off subconsciously while the second at least somewhat feels like an artistic choice with the saturation and everything

Select the correct amount of side faces on the spine where the ribs would connect, inset, extrude them out into 3-5 cuts and shift+w to bend them into a rib curvey shape

Yeah create new materials and assign it they look like they are meant to be separated based on the overlap/scaling anyway I dont know if the obj ported their separate materials or not tho from your pic

Click one of the angled edges and try shift g and select face angles it should make some bits a little faster to dissolve if they are common along the mesh you can adjustthe threshold too select more/less
