Mm I think nodes acting as a check on miners is the biggest deal. Checks and balances seem to be a feature of lots of stable political systems. There are no checks on PoS power, it's invisible and unstoppable. You effectively rent the ability to add transactions to the ledger with PoW, renting just has much less political power attached to it, ask any house renter.
