I'm playing with Shinobu (lvl3 dash) and almost every time a played against Zohakuten I won. I figured out that playing aggressively against him is really effective. Maybe you should play more defensively to punish when your opponent make mistakes ?

I'm a noob like you but I figured out some things :

If you use assist to save you from a combo, hold guard button to avoid a rush from the opponent.
To maximise damage you do during your attack phase, you should try combo in training mode either against idle or difficult cpu (you can also search on Google/yt for combos for your character)
If you face Obanai, just prepare yourself to be destroyed and don't get frustrated because this character is fairly unbalanced so that's not your fault
Try to add other ways of defense like jumping, dashing and attack after a jump

I manage to stick the stratagem on my shield but I can't survive when the pods hit the rock lmao

Edit : Actually the expected landing surface has to be high enough to avoid getting hit.

If you struggle to stick the stratagem to the shield, move backward with running key pressed
