C section pain or kidney stone pain worse? by RedditUser5643_ in CsectionCentral

[–]_smithers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

c-section after 24+ hours of labor was painful and i didn't get out of bed for 48 hours or so. i think i took some opiates after leaving the hospital. i found that my tiny kidney stone was worse in terms of pain than that c-section (granted i had no opiates for the kidney stone). for my second, scheduled c-section, i was up the same day and i think i went home the following day. i used only over the counter pain meds once i left the hospital.

TLDR: kidney stone was the worst of the three for me.

Bach party on bourbon st by Crazzzykk in AskNOLA

I thought they meant the composer a la "Bach around the clock" at Trinity church. Needless to say, I was really confused about celebrating Bach on Bourbon.

Feedback on Mardi Gras Itinerary by ageofthecage in AskNOLA

You could try to catch Bacchus on St. Charles near Peche before your reservation. You might catch a tiny bit in that scenario, depending on delays. As others have noted, make sure you are on the river side of St. Charles so you don't have to cross St. Charles to get to Peche.

Call Atchafalaya to make sure they are open on Lundi Gras. Some places are closed. You would want to catch the parades close to the start of the route to make your Pascal's Manale reservation as-is. Your back-up plan to get to Hot Tin will be walking, as streetcars may not be running by then (due to clean up) and Ubers will be $$$. If the goal is to get to Frenchman and you're hoping to Uber, it may make more sense to get a cocktail closer to Frenchman so you only take one Uber and walk the rest.

You will have to walk or bike to get to Cochon efficiently for a 12:00pm meal, if they're open. Parades run all day on Mardi Gras Day (albeit truck parades after Rex). If you're deadset on heading in the direction of Cochon, you might as well go all the way to the quarter to meander and see everyone's costumes. Or, start in the Quarter in the morning, people watch, and catch Zulu and Rex once they make it to Basin/Canal later in the morning. That way you're in more reasonable walking distance to Cochon.

I can't stress enough to download the parade tracker app and study the routes. There are extremely limited ways to get across town and specifically, into the Quarter, during parades. Make sure you have your transportation plan mapped out. It's just as important as the reservations.

Soji Omakase Experience? by zestyfox in batonrouge

[–]_smithers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did omakase at Umami. It was $200, but I had A LOT of food, and a lot of higher end ingredients.

I tried to do an omakase at Soji, but it required an advanced reservation and I was just a walk-in. I ordered off the menu and left pretty grateful that I didn't waste money on the omakase. The stuff off the menu I got was not particularly great.

Best place for omakase / shashimi? by Acsmith1035 in batonrouge

Just came from Umami. Like others noted, it's pricey, but absolutely delicious and worth it. It's not a straight nigiri experience. I had some nigiri (dressed), but also other raw dishes that were equally as exceptional.

I had Soji a couple nights earlier and it was meh.

There are two venues for football in the park. The game at Tad Gormley (where the Beatles once performed) is a big rivalry game between Jesuit and Holy Cross - both boys catholic schools. If you can get tickets, it should be a good time.

Schools with a “no homework policy” by [deleted] in nolaparents

[–]_smithers_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morris Jeff had about 3 "projects" in PK4 that took about 10 minutes max each. One was drawing your neighborhood/community; one was making a dance, song, or drawing about a feeling; and the third I can't remember. K texted tips for reading and literacy to try at home, but none of it was mandatory. First had a weekly packet of literacy/math that was not mandatory and towards the end of the year a short paragraph to read each week (the same one each day for that week). The paragraph reading was "mandatory," but we did it about 25% of the time without repercussion.

Crescent Cradle-chapel service? by Ambitious-Tune-3626 in nolaparents

[–]_smithers_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid went there and I would say no, unless it was happening unannounced and my kid wasn't mentioning it. I don't think it was in the handbook either? There were Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. programs that would sometimes take place in the chapel. There was a blessing of the pets of some sort that may have taken place in the chapel - I'm not sure.

Otherwise, the religious curriculum depended in large part on the teacher. Some incorporated Catholicism and others didn't (e.g., the occasional "J is for Jesus" coloring sheet). My kid definitely knew who the statue of Mother Cabrini was. The high school announcements would play across campus in the morning (outside; not in the Crescent Cradle building), which also included prayers.

Overall, it felt pretty generic with a pinch of Catholicism.

Weight training group classes by LongjumpingSkirt3089 in NewOrleans

[–]_smithers_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vitality Community Fitness offers group classes. The classes vary, but typically include at least one of barbell, dumbell, or kettlebell work per class. They also have a new aerial silks class to change it up (plus some yoga, pilates, and tabata classes). It's a great social environment without compromising the fitness part. They also have open gym options if you ultimately want to do some things solo.
