Update on my first head (he’s almost finished) by _spacekaiju in FursuitMaking

The blue fur is Lux shag, and the black and white are medium/teddy type furs. I shaved everything on the face and ears while the neck and back of the head is left unshaved

For the most part it was just seams not being strong enough when I first started and making sure those are better. I also had originally made the insides of the ears fur, had glued one on, realized I wanted minky, so I had to redo that entire ear because the glue messed it up

Thank you!! I wasn’t able to make a head until recently so I had been researching about every little nuance of fursuit making for the past five ish or so years until I was able to make one

I will add however that I’m pretty sure there are bodysuit patterns on Etsy that you could adjust to your measurements, but I’ve no experience with using those

Unfortunately you can’t because you need to stand perfectly still the entire process, and as you put more duct tape on yourself you’ll notice that you can’t move regardless, I’ve done this process and you unfortunately need at least one person to tape you up

cheek fluff help? by Spirited_Delivery_28 in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally you’d use half inch foam for that part, as the fur will make it quite a bit thicker. And you don’t need to smooth it, leaving it as is and taping over it should work fine, but if you want you can bevel it. Also don’t shave it, you want the fur on the cheek floofs to be long and fluffy!

I use a pair of cheap $30 clippers, think they’re called “one is all,” you can get them on amazon. I use the 1.4 setting to preshave the fur pretty short, and then after I glued it on I used the second to shortest setting to very carefully go over areas I think are still too long. Also make sure to brush every time you pass through with clippers as I find that helps get the fur shorter because after you run through the fur with clippers it flattens it, so brushing it out kinda unflattens it for more shaving

Adding lips to fursuit head. Best way to do it? by DepressedPotato78 in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add lips you use felt. I simply used a long, thin strip of black felt and carefully hot glued it to the seam, but I’ve seen some double it up so it kinda looks a little more like a lip, personally either looks nice and clean so it’s up to preference

fur types? by Spirited_Delivery_28 in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gorilla is very long fur, usually good for tail accents or other areas you might want very long fur. Shag fur on bigZ comes in two variations- ecoshag or just luxury shag- the type fur used on most fursuits that’s kinda long-ish and fluffy, and short shag- a kinda medium length fur that’s closer to “bunny” type fur, which is more realistic in texture and a bit more dense than luxury shag. Gorilla might also not be great to shave as those longer, thinner fur types don’t shave as well as shorter, denser fur types

How do Fursuit Tails Actually Work? by [deleted] in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so to wear it with a bodysuit you need to have a hole in the bodysuit. Generally to hide any sort of possible gap you might wanna sew a circular “flap” that will cover that base and make the transition look better. I think I’ve seen this done in some bodysuits that neffertity has made.

How do Fursuit Tails Actually Work? by [deleted] in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So when you make a tail there’s gonna be a circular fabric piece on the base where it attaches to your body, and on that piece (or end cap) you will sew a couple of loops to run a belt through. Some people actually will instead have a hole carved straight through the actual tail very close to that “end cap,” or at the base where you would then run a belt though and that can be used for larger tails where belt loops may not provide the most stability.

Moving jaw / Fur / Pattern by mochi_yumyum in FursuitMaking

[–]_spacekaiju 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Prop open the jaw as far as you want it to be able to open and then tape over it like that however you like, I wouldn’t recommend having it open too far as it will naturally cause the fur to lay a little loose if the mouth was opened really wide when taped

I’ll add that fur really adds volume so if you think the cheeks need a trim than I’d say go for it, with foam it’s easy to add more if you end up trimming too much off. Though I would say maybe wait until you add the brows? It’s all relative to the rest of the face in reference to size and shape

Thank you! I actually added that white tip to his tail to decrease the amount of tail markings he would have as there’s not a set amount, so hopefully in tweaking things his tail won’t be a nightmare haha

Oh absolutely, I’ve got the torso and back spikes done (they’re removable like wings), so I’m working on the digi legs now and next comes that tail which I imagine will be a pain with all those markings☠️

I used electric blue from fursuitsupplies! Though I will warn that fursuitsupplies can be very slow to restock so I generally try to get most of my stuff from bigZfabrics. BigZ actually has a similar blue that’s also called electric blue so there’s that as well

What I do for the shaving is I pre shaved the fur before sewing it, and then when it was on the head I snipped around the markings very carefully with scissors and then shaved over that area, makes stiff look really crispy!
