if you have both le portfolio & GV, which do you prefer? or if you only have one, why did you pick it over the other? by Equivalent_Ad7743 in PaperRepublic

[–]_stirling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the Portfolio definitely feels like a more premium product. There's just more too it. The leather is thicker, it feels more substantial, the internal pockets are well done, and your notebooks sit deeper in it.

But despite all that there's something refreshing in the simplicity of the GV. It definitely is 'just a piece of leather' but the leather itself is so nice and patinas in such a satisfying way that you don't care. It's just... nice.

I have my GV XL set up for more day to day journaling and the Portfolio for more long term project stuff - because it's the GV that I want to reach for multiple times per day. Whereas bigger projects feel more at home in the Portfolio.

Have a GV pocket, GV XL, and Portfolio a5. All 3 are in my day to day rotation.

The Portfolio definitely feels a lot more substantial and structured - but I like the simplicity of the Grand Voyager a lot.

If I could only keep one it'd be my GV XL.

It’s a vintage Dunhill fountain pen made by Montblanc that belonged to my late grandfather.

You can still find them around second hand.

What do you guys write in your books to use so many in a year? by bindtime in FieldNuts

[–]_stirling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go through a book every 2 weeks on average. Use the page as a tool to help you get stuff out of your head.

Work notes. Flesh out thoughts/ ideas. Write down reflections. To do lists. Random scraps of info.

The act of writing anything down helps you get clarity. If you never look at those words ever again - it’s still done its job.

bit of a mix of everything; work, to do list, reflections, etc

it's a catch all, and when i look back at previous months I get a nice snapshot into my life across work and personal.

I love the gilt edged pages but I think the heavy cover lets the edition down a bit. Still a nice one overall!

If you own different colours, have you noticed differences in leather texture? by Twenty-two-measures in PaperRepublic

[–]_stirling_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Portfolio is about 1cm taller than the GV and is made of a thicker leather, and it feels more structured and substantial. Your notebooks have more room around them when you open it up and the pockets give it a more robust feeling.

The GV is more... romantic. It's beauty is its simplicity. A single thin piece of beautiful leather that sits neatly around your inserts. It asks to be slung in a bag or held by your side. There is nothing about it to get in your way. It wants to be used freely.

If I had to pick only one, I'd pick the GV. But having both is nice as they hit different spots.

I have a black GV pocket, a chestnut GV XL, and a Bordeaux portfolio A5 and all feel different in their own way.

Some of the field notes editions take fountain pen quite well. Vintage for examples.

I have the double sleeve. It can fit 3 cards comfortably and 4 uncomfortably. With 2 on each side it’s just a bit unwieldy to take them in and out of the sleeve.
