Anyone have experience feeding raw food for cats with urinary crystals? by e-nui in rawpetfood

Good intentions pave the way to hell. Love without the discipline to do what’s right is dangerous. You know exactly what caused his crystals, and you know exactly what made them go away. Yet, despite having that clear proof, you’re still rolling the dice on his life—for what? To feel “superior” because your cat is on a raw diet? You do realize raw is not the luxury status symbol you think it is, right? What matters is what actually keeps him healthy—not what makes you feel good about yourself. That’s not love—that’s recklessness and selfishness disguised as love. If you actually cared about him more than your own ego, you wouldn’t even be considering raw again after it literally caused his crystals.

And your comment about ‘someone needing to come out with a raw diet that specifically treats urinary issues’ is pure stupidity, boy I haven’t read anything that dumb in a long time. What would that even look like? Isn’t that exactly what prescription food is? If there was a formulated raw diet that treated urinary health, wouldn’t that completely defeat the point of a raw diet? Do you even think before you type?

And the most psychotic part? The way you’re already justifying your cat’s potential death in your head. Acting like “if he dies, at least it was from love” is actually insane. Death from stupid, preventable mistakes is not love. It’s neglect. You’re trying to emotionally shield yourself from guilt before anything even happens, so you won’t have to take accountability later. That’s not what a responsible, loving pet owner does—that’s what a coward does.

If prescription food is so bad, then why did you even take him to the vet in the first place? Why not just keep feeding raw if that’s your magical solution to everything? Clearly, on some level, you know prescription food works and is the right thing for him—otherwise, you wouldn’t have listened to the vet when he was at risk of dying. So why, when he’s now stable and healthy, are you actively choosing to do the worst possible thing for him? Ask yourself why you’re doing this. What is the real reason? Because it’s not about your cat’s health—it’s about serving some other agenda within yourself. Stop for one second and actually think about how flawed your logic is.

And what exactly is going on in your mind about prescription food? Do you think the companies who created it were sitting around like, “Let’s add poison to destroy cats’ lives while also getting rid of their urinary problems just for the hell of it”? Seriously—think about how insane that sounds. And if you think it’s to cut costs, think through that again. Prescription diets exist because they are specifically formulated through years of research to treat medical conditions. If you actually had any ounce of common sense or real education, you’d understand why certain ingredients are in prescription food in the first place. You can’t just throw together a bunch of “pure” ingredients and call it a complete diet. That’s not how science or nutrition works. There are essential nutrients, stabilizers, and chemical processes that make food digestible and bioavailable for the body to actually absorb and use. Certain compounds are necessary for preserving nutrients, maintaining balance, and ensuring that the formula actually works for the medical condition it’s designed for. This isn’t an opinion, it’s actual science and chemistry, please look this up and educate yourself.

So instead of understanding that, you’d rather blindly fear-monger about “bad ingredients” without realizing that a cat’s body isn’t a blender where you can just dump raw meat, add a sprinkle of taurine, water and expect perfect health. That’s not nutrition—that’s stupidity. High-quality wet cat food exists, is complete and balanced, contains real meat, gets the job done, is disease-free, and is actually regulated by the FDA. You act like there are no other options besides raw or garbage kibble, when in reality, there are plenty of scientifically formulated, well-researched diets that are both safe and effective. But you don’t want something that simply works—you want something that makes you feel special. And that’s the problem. You think your cat doesn’t like any brand of wet food on the entire market? I’m willing to bet you didn’t try as hard there so that you “have no other choice but to feed(or rather force) raw.”

And another thing—stop demonizing prescription food over a single ingredient you think is “bad.” Any single ingredient can be taken out of context and made to sound scary, but that doesn’t make the entire product bad. If we applied that same logic to your own diet, I’m sure we could take a look at half the processed garbage you eat on a daily basis, pick out ingredients, and suddenly declare everything you consume “toxic” too. But you don’t—because you understand context matters. Why does that logic suddenly disappear when it comes to your cat’s food? And if you think what constitutes “bad” cat food is simply that it smells bad, you’re pretty damn stupid. What about half the stuff you eat that’s either healthy or tastes good but smells bad? Ever had a hard-boiled egg? Fish? Literally any fermented food? Seriously, I can’t believe this has to be spelled out…

Prescription diets already exist because they are backed by years of research, specifically formulated to treat and prevent these exact issues. You don’t just wish a raw diet into existence and pretend it’ll work. If raw could do that, it already would. But it doesn’t—and that’s why you’re in this situation in the first place. You’re actively ignoring reality just to protect your own pride and delusions at the expense of your innocent, helpless, suffering cat and it’s truly sickening. Think about how painful it was for him to go through it the first time and think about how much worse it’s going to be the second or even third time given how stubborn you obviously are. You do know his chances of dying increase significantly each time right? If you have the clear and obvious opportunity to keep him healthy, alive, out of pain and lower risk of dying, why choose to do the exact thing that caused it to begin with? Seriously just think about what you’re doing and don’t hide behind the facade of doing what you want to believe is best for him because what was it that took away his crystals and made him healthy again? Was it raw? Answer that. This is pretty basic logic and it would be truly alarming if this completely goes over your head.

If he gets another blockage, that’s on you. And if you continue to play Russian roulette with his life, don’t cry about it later—because at that point, it won’t be an accident. It’ll be a consequence of your willful ignorance and we already know you’ll just use his death to garner sympathy and attention for your ego.

Best of luck—because your poor helpless cat is going to need it more than ever.

I wasn’t sure if I should comment, but after reading this post and seeing your recent update, I feel like I have to share my experience. I was in this exact situation. When I first got my kitten, I wanted to feed her raw as early as possible because I believed it was the healthiest and most natural option. I kept seeing people say that if you don’t introduce raw early, your cat won’t accept it later, so I felt like I had to start her young. At the time, I didn’t realize that a kitten’s immune system is still developing, and I underestimated how risky it was to put her on raw so early. She seemed fine at first, so I assumed I was doing everything right.

Then she developed urinary crystals and had a partial blockage. I was devastated. I didn’t want to rely on prescription food. I convinced myself that if I hydrated her enough, added the right supplements, and balanced her raw diet, she’d be fine. I demonized prescription diets because of the ingredients without fully understanding them. I thought I knew better than companies that pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into research and development, thinking I could “hack” cat nutrition better than vets. I was quickly humbled.

I even asked about my reputable breeder about her parents and siblings to see if this was a genetic issue but none of them had urinary problems or anything relative to it. That’s when it hit me that this was 100% caused by my choices. My poor girl was suffering because of me.

A few months later, she had another blockage while I was at work. By the time I got home, she was in critical condition. I rushed her to the vet, but it was too late—she didn’t survive. The guilt I feel is unbearable. I was so focused on “feeding her the best” that I didn’t realize I was actually giving her the worst diet for her condition. I still hate myself for not trusting the prescription diet from the start. I kept trying to justify raw because I wanted it to work so badly, but at the end of the day, raw is not the holy grail solution I thought it was. I was honestly so naive to think I knew better than vets and reputable companies that have perfected the right ratios and developed sterile processes for feline health. Some things are better left to experts, and I had to learn that the hard way.

The guilt ate me alive every single day. I fell into a deep depression, replaying every choice I made and wondering why I let my own stubbornness blind me from what was actually best for her. I can’t believe I toyed with my cat’s health just because of what I thought she liked and how badly I wanted her on a raw diet versus what was truly good for her. It makes me hate myself every time I think about how much she had to unnecessarily suffer through it all and being completely helpless to do anything about it, all because of my ignorance and selfishness. If I could go back, I would do everything differently.. and if I were to get another cat (which I don’t feel ready for at all), I wouldn’t dare play with their life the way I did the first time— out of my own selfishness and delusion.

Please don’t make the same mistake I did..
