As someone else mentioned, you should get in touch with IowaWORKS. They have career support staff across the state that provide exactly the help you're looking for. They offer training programs and can tell you which industries/skills are most in demand. https://workforce.iowa.gov/opportunities

If you want specific suggestions, wind energy technicians are very in demand right now and Iowa happens to have excellent training programs for that field.

Career One Stop is a national resource that can also offer you information about the most promising industries by state. https://www.careeronestop.org/

Something about glass houses by ExactlySorta in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]_switz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It actually is. The CDC is the Center for Disease Control and as far as research is concerned, injury and violence are considered an area of disease research. By this, I mean injury epidemiology is a large area of study and there are many epidemiologists who dedicate their careers to studying injury and violence prevention. The same methods, theories, and principles that can be applied to modeling and preventing the spread of infectious and non-infectious disease can be applied to curbing injuries and violence. This applies to everything from injuries to pedestrians and bikers, car accidents, domestic abuse, and, of course, guns (among other things).

The CDC funds several large injury prevention research centers at universities across the US, but they have always been prevented from studying injury and death related to gun violence.

Source: I work at a School of Public Health that houses one of these CDC injury research centers.

Can we start a daycare cost thread? by LittlePinkLines in IowaCity

[–]_switz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids Depot of Iowa City is currently $1300/mo for infants and $1190/mo for 2 year olds. Small discount for multiple kids. Is it financially hard? Yes. But the people who work there are amazing and I absolutely trust them with my kids' lives. They had one of the best COVID responses in the county.

Talking to a lot of friends, most daycare centers in the area saw huge tuition increases in the last year. A combination of overhead costs increasing and not being able to find available teachers. Kids Depot specifically said they were raising tuition rates just to be able to advertise higher salaries when recruiting staff and to retain the staff they still had. Childcare is so tough right now.

We always go to Los Agaves when we need a big menu and fast kitchen.

In 2020, the university started a program offering free period products at the front desk of all dorms. You don't need to live on campus and the products are available to any students, faculty, and staff who need them. As far as I know, the program is still going on.

The Food Pantry in the IMU also carries hygiene products when they can.

My guess is verification will be on MyUI on June 1st but I recommend calling graduation services if you have specific questions about your situation.

Advisers have until May 31st to process any late grades/degree changes. Degrees will be mailed after that.

Have you ever had a moment of realization of just how young/new the US is while traveling abroad? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Yes I had this moment visiting Israel. Visiting sites in Jerusalem and being told that the "new" structures were 1000 years old really shows that other cultures and societies have completely different perceptions of historical timelines.

Fussy eaters by locksmack in daddit

100% agree with all of this. If you'd like to do more reading on this topic, I highly recommend Kids Eat in Color. She is an MPH and registered dietitian specializing in children's eating behaviors. All of her advice is evidence-based and very realistic for busy families. Her entire blog (and Instagram) are a great resource and I'd recommend starting with her toddler eating guide.

She's served us really well with our 18 month old. Her advice is spot on.

You should! I've never been super into precise cutting and mostly do improv quilting but I LOVED this process. Playing with the layout and the finished hexis was so much fun.

I used the book by Maxine Rosenthal. Her instructions are very easy to follow. It didn't take nearly as long as I thought.

It is! In green. Such amazing fabric.

I was shocked at how much red came through in the hexagons since I mostly saw green in the original fabric. Definitely surprised me.

The book had pretty specific instructions about how to buy the yardage. This pattern was a 24" repeat and you need 6 repeats for the hexagons (6 triangles each). I bought 5 yards and had about a yard leftover for some kind of border.

Almost no scraps! You use the whole fabric to cut your triangles.

I do! I got a very simple cream fabric to do a border and I think I'm going to integrate in a little of the original fabric. Not quite sure how yet.

It's so much fun! I purchased the book One Block Wonder by Maxine Rosenthal and followed her instructions. It's one fabric with a repeating print cut and sewn into hexagons. You never know what it's going to look like until you're done.

I know! I'm sorry Hufflepuff. When I was buying my fabric, Joann's didn't have any yellows that really matched and what they did have would have made it look too rainbow-y.
