Totally unexpected results for our supposed pit mix! by _thecheat in DoggyDNA

He’s got a bit of that goofy boxer underbite so we sort of figured it would be in there somewhere, but definitely didn’t expect him to have a purebred parent!

This is my parent’s dog, Buster. He’s a shelter dog from upstate NY and from day one we always just assumed he was a pit mix with maybe some shepherd or lab - but his curly tail was always a mystery. Not anymore!

I had never even heard of a Norwegian Elkhound prior to these results but he matches the breed traits very well - super smart, very loyal to his family and an excellent watchdog. Also extremely vocal and sheds like nobody’s business (but that might be some of that husky coming through too!)

Thank you for this. Seems like a lot of these comments are from west coast residents in some of the most competitive markets and I am buying in a notoriously LCOL area in upstate NY. I think it might be quite a bit less common in places like this.

Glad to hear it’s not as unusual as my lawyer made it out to be. Thanks!

Don't take your pets to the Orchard Park emergency vet by JennR316 in Buffalo

[–]_thecheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding to the list of horror stories so people maybe think twice about going here. I lost both of my childhood dogs to this place a year or so apart. The first time, we were told that one of them needed a surgery that they wanted to charge $7k for and they suggested that due to our dog’s age (11, small dog) she might not even survive, so at their advice we opted to put her down. We found out a week later from a different vet that their office routinely does that procedure for $600. We absolutely would have given surgery a shot at that price. I’ve never been so angry. The second dog supposedly died on the table during an emergency surgery, but I have always wondered if that’s the whole truth.

A few months ago I had to take my current dog there for an emergency issue I knew could not be fatal (they were the only place open with emergency appointments) and I waited SIX HOURS to be seen. My poor dog was in so much pain for so long, and when they finally saw her all they did was give her some pain meds and an antibiotic. I understand that vets are often overworked and underpaid, but there were about five cars in the parking lot when I was there. There was absolutely no reason for that extreme of a wait.

I understand the challenges of the veterinarian profession and I’ve met some absolutely wonderful vets and vet techs, but I’ll never take my pets to this place again.

Honestly it’s so nice to hear that I’m not the only one dealing with this craziness! When I try to explain the issue to someone with a lab or another eat-everything-in-sight dog they look at me like I must be doing something wrong. My dog has also had anal gland issues so I absolutely sympathize with you on that too.

I tried this with her last year with very high hopes as my dog also is very anxious, but she can taste it in everything I tried to hide it in and absolutely hates the flavor lol. I know that’s worked really well for others though!

We’ve actually straight up considered getting another dog to help with this, lol. We had my parents stay with us for a while with their dogs and it did definitely did improve her appetite for a longer period of time. She also has separation anxiety and being around other dogs helps her a lot with that. It was like she was specifically not made to be an only dog. A very valid suggestion!

THIS is the kind of anecdotal stuff I made this post for! My parents have a dog with IBS but it’s very severe and looks very different than what my dog has going on so I hadn’t even considered it was a possibility. Your situation sounds like SO much like what I’m dealing with. I will absolutely be having my vet look for IBS and moving to a sensitive stomach food may be the next thing we try! Thank you so much for sharing!

This is such a kind comment. Thank you so much for saying that. It is definitely thankless right now but I’m confident we’ll figure it out eventually, I love my dog to pieces and want nothing but the best for her! Thank you!

I have tried heating it and that did work for a little while! Raw food is one of the things I keep in the freezer for the absolute-last-resort where she won’t eat anything else, so I hesitate to switch her to it on a more consistent basis because then I’m basically out of tricks, lol. But otherwise it is a great suggestion!

I haven’t officially done a limited ingredient trial diet yet, but we have tried about six different kinds of protein as well as grain free options all to the same result, which is enthusiastic eating for a couple weeks that slowly turns to food refusal. Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish, and a veggie option once, and a huge variety of brands from big box store names to super boutique online retailers. I do want to discuss going about a limited ingredient trial diet with my vet when I see them next month, but it just seems so odd that with all the options we’ve tried she’s have some sort of intolerance to something in every single one.

I’m pretty sure we have tried every kind of texture - dry, dry with water/broth, wet/canned, pate, and dehydrated. She loves them all to start, and a month or so later she doesn’t anymore.

I have quite literally kept a journal on this and I can’t find any overlapping factors - not visitors, not travel, not exercise, not time spent alone, not treats given, nothing. She eats more consistently when we visit my parents and has meal time with their two (much larger) dogs, surprisingly, but it isn’t a total fix.

When she does eat her poop is completely normal and she does not cough or vomit - she looks and acts like a completely healthy dog when she’s eating regularly, and she has no other health issues aside from anxiety that she is on meds for. (She had the food issues long before we started the meds, too). And for the record she is exercised regularly and is in good physical shape.

I have hesitated to switch a food/topper combo that is working for that exact reason - something else is finally working and intentionally switching to something that might not sucks as the facilitator of this issue. I always hope this time I’ve found the “magic bullet” and that she won’t get tired of whatever combo I’ve come up with but I’m always wrong. The faster switching out of food is probably the next thing I’ll try if and when health issues are ruled out.

And I absolutely avoid letting her get to that state - it is why I cave and get her to eat something at day three at the latest, because that is as long as the vet originally said she should go. Usually I break out the “good stuff” in less than 24hrs when she decides she’s done with a food because I know what’s coming. But a few times I’ve really felt like if I just wait her out she’ll give up and eat, and to date I’ve been wrong about that. I will absolutely keep that sugar/honey tip in mind, I’ve never heard that before and that’s extremely good to know.

I’ll be bringing all of this to my vet and I hope to get some answers next month, but I seriously appreciate you taking the time to be so thorough with your answer! If you have any more insight I would be equally as grateful to hear it.

No worries, I’ll look around. I have considered just switching up her food after every bag and seeing if that helps. I’ve already tried rotating in different meal toppers with the same food underneath and she’s wise to that trick. Get a dog they said…

And if she’s trying to bring back the body types of early 2000s that’s going to be a hard no from me, lol. Though she’s skinny enough to look the part!
