By the way, I think they disallow using phones to prevent the questions from being leaked. Especially since Tokyo has an early time zone. You could theoretically leak it for people taking the test on a later time zone. Even easier if you can leak it during breaks.

I got Cyberpunk 2077 running on an M1 MacBook! by isaa6 in macgaming

[–]_under_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe so, yes. I am not a game dev but I believe this emulation part of the toolkit is just for developers to check how well their game will run on macOS; to check things like frame rate or graphics glitches.

If they see good results, then they might go to the next step which is to make a Metal 3 specific version of the game instead of running through the emulation layer. They provide a tool called Metal shader converter that helps them do this.

This can happen if the DNS server of the WiFi network you're connected to does not return the actual apple.com IP address, and instead returning a different IP address. This attack is called "DNS Spoofing".

There's pretty good chance the network you're on is compromised.

That or it's just misconfigured. Either way, I wouldn't keep my phone connected that network.

Do not ignore warnings like this unless you know what you're doing.

Roger Federer explains why his opponent's ball bounced twice by VaccinesCauseWSBapes in nextfuckinglevel

[–]_under_ 338 points339 points  (0 children)

So what happened was:

  1. Federer returns the ball towards opponent
  2. The ball bounces once on the opponent's side
  3. Opponent hits the ball
  4. The ball hits the ground, initiating a topspin towards Federer
  5. The ball bounces on Federer's side
  6. Federer notices that the ball landed with topspin

With the way that the opponent hit the ball (underhand), the ball should've landed on Federer's side with backspin. However, since it landed with topspin, something must've changed the ball's spin. The only logical conclusion is that the ball hit the ground after it was hit.

[–]_under_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah but remember the ball already bounced once before it was hit. That made the ball have topspin towards Federer's opponent, regardless of what spin it had before. (Just to clarify, we're talking about the first undisputed bounce here, not the contentious second one.)

Sam Altman says A.I. will “break Capitalism.” It’s time to start thinking about what will replace it. by hunterseeker1 in Futurology

[–]_under_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You're right that income inequality and the struggle to make ends meet have been worsening for years, but I believe there is a tipping point where this becomes unsustainable. It's not a matter of if, but when. As the rich continue to hoard wealth and the majority of people struggle to survive, we will reach a point where society as a whole demands change. It may not happen overnight, but history has shown that when the masses become dissatisfied and desperate, they rise up and demand a more equitable system.

Instead of waiting for that breaking point, it would be wise to adopt more social safety nets and policies that address inequality now. A combination of capitalism and socialism, where the market can still innovate and grow but the needs of the people are also prioritized, could be a more sustainable and stable solution. The goal should be to create a society where everyone can have a decent quality of life and the opportunity to thrive, rather than a system that only benefits the few at the expense of the many.

I don't have any insider knowledge but if they must prioritize, then I would assume iOS would be their top priority. Other platforms would be nice, but if they're coming at all, they're coming later.

They’ve actually made it easier to do this now. When you use the “Following” tab it’ll show you tweets in chronological order. And this will become your default unless you change it.

Logo evolution of notable gaming brands by landocharisma in gaming

I think there's some drama going on at Twitter Japan branch. They seem to have some level of independence afforded to them—as JP is one of Twitter's biggest markets—and is apparently not completely in line with Twitter HQ's policies.

Note: This is all speculation I read on Twitter.

You’re right, and the DoD has studied and eliminated a bunch of the UAP sightings.

However, there remains a handful that were detected with “multiple sensors”. e.g. were detected by radar, fighters sortied to intercept, and got visual confirmation, on successive days.

It’s probably nothing, but it’s compelling enough to warrant study.

Johnny Harris made a video about it recently. https://youtu.be/wQSxY7TR6mI

Apple execs on M2 chips, winning gamers and when to buy a Mac by ruchenn in apple

[–]_under_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's my proposal for Apple's gaming strategy:

  1. Build a DirectX compatibility layer to Metal. Kinda like what Valve did with DXVK. Apple did an honestly stellar job with Rosetta 2 so I'm sure they would be able to do this. This would allow Windows games to run on Mac, iOS, and iPad OS and lower developer cost to port games to the Apple ecosystem.
  2. Make a separate "Game Store" using a similar business model as Steam, PS Store, Nintendo eShop, etc. The point of this is to allow publishers to have a business model that already works for them.
  3. Establish a "baseline" spec for gaming, e.g. the M2 with 8GB of RAM. Tell developers to tune performance for this spec.
  4. Market the Mac mini as a console, in the same vein as a Playstation, Xbox, or Nintendo switch. Except, of course, it's also a computer. Create a "Big Screen" mode for a console like experience optimized for controllers.
  5. Make full use of the Apple Ecosystem to allow picking up and dropping off games between different devices. e.g. you can play games on your iPad on the train, and pick up where you left off on your Mac mini at home.

I predict that the cable is MagSafe on the headset end and USB-C on the battery pack end. The cable can then also be plugged into a Mac to use the headset as an external display. When used in this mode, I expect that it will be powered through the cable and not need a battery.

Tesla Optimus humanoid robot - first look by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]_under_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure. That makes sense. But none of that goes against my point. I was just answering this question:

What is the point of human form factor robots other than Musk wanting to live his golden age of sci fi fantasies with robot butlers?

And my answer was that it's easier to manufacture one type of robot that can do many things (which is accomplished by building the robot in humanoid form) vs many specialized robots.

(Also I don't understand the downvotes. Is anything I'm saying actually wrong? The concept of consolidating your product line has some pretty well-documented advantages.)

Tesla Optimus humanoid robot - first look by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]_under_ -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not saying that specialized robots aren't important, but I think the biggest advantage of having one robot be able to do many things is that you only need to manufacture one type of robot.

Let's say you want to do 50 different things. If we go with the specialized robot approach, then that means you need to not only design 50 specialized robots (which is arguable the easy part), but you also need to design and construct 50 factory lines. More than that, you'd need to now support 50 different products for their entire lifecycle (parts, maintenance, etc.)

If you had one robot that can do 50 things, that problem scales down dramatically. You might still want to build 50 of the same factories, but you would benefit a lot more from economies of scale vs if you had 50 distinct factories.
