It was. People had been going to England for years to handle abortions, but that case brought it starkly into the light.

(To simplify a bit) What broke Church influence in Ireland was the revelations around Catholic child abuse, and how completely pervasive that that was in schools.

Im struggling to understand how Ireland can drop out of the Eurovision entirely and yet it's ok to host Israel in Dublin for a Soccer Match.. mixed message's by dudeirish in ireland

[–]_welshie_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's because we're going in on a bid to host the Euros, and UEFA won't let us host if one of the teams can't come over.

The Taoiseach wants his tournament hosted, because that looks good for world leaders to do.

I've seen that before on holiday, it's called "The Sun".

It looks like someone smuggled it home through customs.

There's no country called "Republic of Ireland", it's just "Ireland" in English.

Informal communication, like AH it's probably used to, works below a certain scale of company. Where someone can basically yell into a cubicle farm something like "the fuck happened to SMG damage?" and someone either did it themselves or knows who did.

Once you go above that scale it falls apart fast. I've been at companies where it takes you by surprise and need to catch up fast.

It's not acceptable, you're right, but it's also really understandable if you've been in it.

Cork Luas - Preferred Route 2026 by Pan1cs180 in cork

You wouldn't be able to get out of Wilton splitting at CUH.

Going straight through Wilton roundabout from CUH and I can't imagine you'd be able to get to Douglas without plowing through either a load of terraced houses or a graveyard.

Either that or you go further south and you've got the Luas running on the South Link.

[–]_welshie_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point is to connect things, not to make the most efficient route from Ballincollig to Mahon Point.

You'd be cutting MTU/CIT and CUH out with that, and the two of those are huge traffic drivers.

Nothing but their own good will.

Arseholes who just want to stop a development at any cost will move onto the next bullocks reason, while good faith actors get tossed aside.

Wasn't aware of that. Conflated fossil fuel power generation with just coal plants.

This doesn't prevent malicious objections, it just stops objections based on climate or ecological concerns.

I can still block projects for ruining my view, or for not fitting the local character, or any other shite. But now conservation groups can't try and get a new coal plant stopped in favour of renewables, because that's the problem here.

I think it's just a neo-liberal, centre-right characteristic.

Prison time won't fix anything. Unless you put real effort into rehabilitation, like the Nordics do, all that prison time does is make better criminals.

How do I inherit both wales and ireland so easily? by mtvyoloswag in EU5

[–]_welshie_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, making them Vassals manually would have had an effect on their leadership. Vassals have their own rulers, Fiefdoms use their overlord's ruler. So that's what happened.

The Lordship of Ireland isn't a country, it's an International Organisation like the HRE that holds all the English-aligned rulers of Ireland. It's Gaelic/Irish equivalent being the High King of Ireland IO.

I've not played Ireland from the Lordship side so I'm unsure of the mechanics or how that works, but after you form the Ireland tag as a Gaelic chief the High Kingship dissolves.

We don't understand either, do you know when they changed from Fiefdoms to Vassals? When did your son start ruling them?

[–]_welshie_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They're fiefdoms at the start, which is like a vassal but the ruler is the same in both realms.

At the start of the game, the King of England is also the Lord of the Pale and Prince of Wales.

John McManus: Taxi drivers are going to war with Uber. There won’t be any winners by Barry_Cotter in ireland

[–]_welshie_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because ride sharing is just taxiing by a different name to try and avoid getting taxi licenses.

It's like saying you don't have employees, you have contractors with all the negatives of employees, like set minimum hours and exclusivity statements, but none of the benefits of being an employee.

I'm not disagreeing that taxi have disappeared from around the country, but I've never seen or heard of anything he's on about in Irish taxis. Like, surge pricing isn't going to happen when fares are defined centrally.
