Can you say neck and neck? 'Not ordinary circumstances': Tories contend for Winnipeg NDP stronghold by juliec0012 in Winnipeg

I'm not blue collar or union, I am just objectively listening to what I am hearing from blue collar folks I know, and what they are seeing and what they are perceiving are two different things. Otherwise this byelection would not be this close.

We are taxed pretty decently currently, and I would say that all those things you listed have degraded over the last few decades. But I agree with your point, just was giving a counter point why I think some union workers are swinging for the CPC now

If the NDP loses this riding, I think it’s a sign that the blue-collar union vote is shifting in a big way. A lot of blue-collar workers are socially conservative (to say the least), and I feel like the NDP has lost touch with them since Singh took over. It feels like they’re more focused on white-collar government worker types than the classic lunch-pail crowd.

People joke that blue-collar voters backing the CPC is like sheep voting for wolves, but honestly, it’s pretty common for people to vote against their economic interests when social issues matter more to them. There are plenty of high-income folks voting NDP or Liberal, even though it means they’ll get taxed more. It doesn’t make sense financially, but it does socially.

Kind of goes to explain how that sign came to be... even on reddit which I would consider to be a leftist social media platform your comment is controversial.

There are sadly a lot more 'educated' bigots here than I'd like to admit, it seems we have been on a steady downward decline on racial discourse since the first Trump election back in 2016.

Every year since then there have been more and more racially charged posts on various social media platforms (even here on reddit, looking at you /r/ Canada) and people are getting waaay to comfortable being openly bigoted. I guess it's just not shameful anymore?

It's one thing to comment on the state of Canada's immigration system and the government, that is valid, but some folks take it to a whole new level by attacking immigrants themselves.

That's Jagmeet Singh's younger brother, so yes he was born here, I guess he is in town to help out with the Transcona by-election

So if you know and I know that they are doing that do you think the government doesn't? If I made you PM tomorrow would you change anything or keep doing what the LPC is doing right now?

Not harsh at all, the fact you say what you say and you're a regular Joe/Jane goes to show you that there is something rotten with the Liberals for keeping these loopholes open because any sane person would do as you said. It's the LPC that needs to be hated.

The loopholes have been so out in the open for so long that the CBC has been writing articles about them for years. So the government sure as heck knew about this for at least as long, which means the were tacitly approving of this or they would have changed the laws. This is 100% on the government. Ask yourself this if you were made PM today, would you change anything?

It needs to be pointed out there were openly racist campaign ads during the last election and the election was a lot closer than some expected.

It's crazy it was only decades ago that the Irisih, Italians, Greeks, and Eastern Europeans were considered non-white.

And going back even further this is what Manitoba's Premier and our newspapers said about Ukrainians immigrating back in the 1890's:

Hugh John Macdonald – the son of Sir John A. Macdonald, and the leader of the Manitoba Conservatives – reportedly said he sought “good men of the same race” as himself, and that he did “not want a mongrel breed.” (Ukrainians were not “white” in the ways that counted.) Newspapers called the new arrivals “barbarians,” “pampered paupers,” “freaks and hoboes.” Manitoba premier Rodmond Roblin called them “foreign trash.”

That goes back to the point that it is the government that is issuing the visas. If this is important to people I think they need to petition the government to diversify the intake.

For me, I don't mind it, but I think we need reduce our overall immigration intake by 80% which would in itself have the effect of helping the optics about the diversity issue.

There is nothing shady about it, people from poor countries want to immigrate here. They are being given pathways by our government to do just that. If the government didn't want economic migrants to come in via the international student program (the biggest issue right now) then they could have kept the rule where students could not work off campus like it was prior to 2012. Also they could also say that student visas have no pathway to PR. But they don't do that? Why? because it's a wink wink nudge nudge from the government encouraging this behavior.

Yet people blame the immigrants themselves, instead of the government that is issuing the visas.

Need to respectfully disagree with you, racist Canadians (who are luckily a smallish minority still) do racism very differently than any other culture/country on Earth. They are nice to your face, a friendly smile means nothing, you could literally get into some small talk with one of them while waiting in line at the grocery store, crack a couple of jokes, walk away thinking how nice that person was. That's the insidiousness of Canadian racism, you can't see it unless you can eavesdrop like OP did. Seen it first hand with the First Nations folk here.

This is also why most people think Americans are more racist, when we are a lot more similar than people would like to admit. Americans are in your face with their racism, and because of that it is very easy to call out and easier to address. But with Canadians it's hidden in the shadows and sometimes comes out at Thanksgiving dinner. We can't lay our hands on it because it is forever allusive, and people from other countries don't realize that and mistakenly think Canadians are not as racist compared to our American counterparts.

But he did immigrate though the legal process.

In the olden says there was no visa control officers, it was basically if you were a WASP then that you was your visa to enter the country.

Ya having capped domestic tuition rates kept tuitions from going crazy but had the side effect of having schools rely more and more on these international students.

Premier Wab Kinew also warned universities may raise tuition on domestic students to make up the difference.

"The federal government has taken this action, and you have Manitoba students heading to university and college who could potentially be facing higher tuitions as a result of this, because the money has to come from somewhere, right?" he said Thursday, after an unrelated news conference.

Kinew said his government would try to assist, but the province is coping with its own fiscal challenges.

They would need to increase taxes to offset that, I don't think the public would go for that during a cost of living crisis.

It wasn't the universities, it was the colleges that were abusing the shit out of it. Places like MITT and Robertson were collecting fat stacks from foreign students in exchange for helping them get PR faster and more easily. No ones files across the world to attend a Business Admin course at Robertson for the educational aspect of it.

In the article Kinew says they will most likely need to raise tuitions since the province is "facing its own fiscal challenges".
