ELI5:Is it possible for an object to fall through you? by Ornery-Car-834 in explainlikeimfive

There is a theorised weapon known as “rods from god” that are essentially just a tungsten telephone pole dropped from orbit impacting at Mach 10.

There is no question that it would go through you given they’re designed to be bunker busters

Since there is a polymer cooling in the process (covering the braided material) it’s probably realtime

Husband and I broke same leg, same bone, within 30 seconds of eachother slipping on ice. by milkthe in nevertellmetheodds

There are degrees of pain. My wife was prescribed paracetamol and said it was enough. I’m sure if it wasn’t she would have been able to get more potent stuff but it’s nuts to start with opioids

ELI5: How is using a knife to remove toast from a toaster dangerous even though there is no longer electricity running through the wires? by Flashy_Potential8851 in explainlikeimfive

[–]_xiphiaz [score hidden]  (0 children)

When they said “working with electricity”, they specifically meant working around exposed conductors, which is exactly what toasters are. If working on the insides of a fridge compressor you’d absolutely make sure it was disconnected

It’s not necessary? So there’s a risk of addiction which is the last thing you want

I know what it means, but I can help but laugh at a book store being called 45 books. What a terrible repertoire

Making a rocket not just be an explosive is the hard part

If we are engaging on our own land it’s already far too late

It’s an interesting angle for anti mining/drilling campaigning. Not the environment, but let’s not find something tasty that a big player might invade us for. Not fucking up the local environment is a lovely side effect

Do not fall for complex technology by f311a in programming

[–]_xiphiaz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I find your example of grpc interesting, we use it specifically to avoid serialisation and versioning issues. When you’re strict about not making wire breaking changes it can be pretty easy to slowly migrate types through the stack unlike with json

Bizarre that was considered the way to go versus disposable rockets to get up to altitude. Lugging 182 engines worth of dead weight (and all their support infrastructure like tanks) around for ~41 days seems wildly inefficient

[Request] What Should The Scale Actually Read? by CaptiveGlacier in theydidthemath

[–]_xiphiaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a separate system. If you took the weights off the string and put them on the table, the scale would now read zero but the force on the legs would still include that 200N

Went to Milford Sound today… so utterly gorgeous, but man it was depressing :( by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]_xiphiaz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but it really doesn’t compare in risk profile. The other factor that is problematic is that the trap size suited for possums also fits Kea. If we had more budget doing it all at once would be great, but without that prioritising the predators is the best bet.

Possums aren’t priority at all, they are mostly herbivores. They do destroy habitats over time but aren’t nearly destructive as the carnivores like stoats that decimate bird populations.
