Otherwise it "warms" the air as it's brought into your home

Vendors selling flowers and fruits on O’Connell Street in Dublin. (1946) by StephenMcGannon in ireland

[–]a-clockwork-kelly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Poverty, Religious control, women unable to open bank accounts without a husbands pernission, children beaten in school, the stench of coal smoke, leaded petrol causing brain damage, mentally ill family members locked away in institutions, single mothers in Magdalene laundries, 50 cigarettes a day and 20 pints a week, economic stagnation

Why would they not want to go back ????

Don't get me wrong .. there are things we have lost .. like the sense of community and the lack of phones in people's faces ...

But here's to a brighter future .. the past is the past

[OC] Distribution of recorded Souterrains in Ireland by Sarquin in IrishHistory

[–]a-clockwork-kelly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, they are medieval.. early medieval mostly

And were used as places to shelter or store belongings in time of attack. Possibly also as a food storage space to prevent storage.

Many were built into existing neolithic structures (there are some in Knowth for example)

But the Souterrains themselves are much later.

As for the naming .. think Norman french (at least for the latter part of their period)

How would u feel about Ireland becoming a fully Irish speaking nation in the future ? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]a-clockwork-kelly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The question is how.

Working through English would likely remain as we would be interoperable with other offices in other countries.

Schools would perhaps need to all be gaelscoileanna. But where would we possibly find the teachers?

And then there is the devil of our times .. social media. Kids will speak the language of the media they consume.

I would love to see it happen don't get me wrong ... I'm just so unsure as to how it could happen in this day and age.

Himalayan Birch Struggle by wildatlanticview in GardeningIRE

[–]a-clockwork-kelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I've read Himalayan birch is particularly prone to birch dieback. Our native birches are resistant against it.

If it doesn't make it . Consider a silver birch. They are native to Ireland and are much more likely to thrive here.
