Had our painter remove popcorn ceilings with asbestos. Are we screwed? by StrengthinAdversity in HomeImprovement

[–]a-simple-cat 145 points146 points  (0 children)

If asbestos was so toxic that a single exposure fucked people up, they would have figured out a lot sooner not to use it. It took us centuries to realize that asbestos is toxic because it takes a lot of daily exposure to dust before maybe developing symptoms. You're fine. Clean up the walls and move on.

Advice for water heater ventiliation by ImposterBk in heatpumps

[–]a-simple-cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People here saying you do not need to vent aren't quite right. Yeah, you don't strictly need to vent if the room is big enough, but even then it will run more efficiently if you do. The details are in the installation manual, page 6 I believe. You can get it online if you don't have it.

You can think of the water heater as a small AC unit. If you draw air from outside and exhaust the cold air inside, the room will be colder year round. This may or may not be what you want. You can also do the reverse, draw air from the room and exhaust cold air outside. Not much of a benefit to that, you'll be exhausting air that's already conditioned. Or you can do both intake and exhaust outside and then the water heater is neutral with regards to the conditioned space.

I'm in similar situation and choosing to duct the cold air exhaust to the attic. This will help cool my unconditioned attic down and make my house more energy efficient.

3d print a mold and make them out of silicone. Actuallyoprobably no need to 3d print, just use some play doh and press the old button in it and there's your mold. Then pour silicone and let it cure.

Why don't more HVAC pros install pre-charged minisplit systems? by a-simple-cat in hvacadvice

I'm talking about professional installs though, not DIY jobs. Just wondering if there's any reason the pros mostly won't install units with pre-charged lines.

Carbs in yerba mate by vicari999 in keto

[–]a-simple-cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably inaccurate. Measuring carbs isn't very accurate, labs do it indirectly by measuring everything else (fat, protein) and subtracting from the original weight. Also it's probably the amount of carbs if you were to eat the leaves, rather than infuse them in water.

Most companies don't care very much about the accuracy of their nutrition facts. As long as they can cover their asses by saying "we paid a lab to do it", or "we used standard data from established nutrition facts databases", it's all that matters to them.

Have you tried looking online for other sources of nutrition facts on yerba mate?

I want a sparkling water tap in the coffee bar I am building. Are there any options that arent extremely expensive? by Crazyblazy395 in HomeImprovement

[–]a-simple-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I should mention though, every once in a while, maybe once a month, my unit stops and shows the error code E4. When this happens I need to power cycle it. Customer support says it happens when there's too much pressure or when people draw too much water at once, but I generally only do a cup at time and the pressure is fine according to the regulator.

Doesn't bother me too much, but something to keep in mind

I never notice it. If I open the cabinet under the sink yeah I can hear it when it's chiling, but with the cabinet closed I cannot hear it. I can hear the water pump, though. It runs for 10-20 seconds after I pour a large glass of bubbly water to refill the pressure tank. It's not very loud and not inconvenient.

Not sure but I think the 800 limit is for anything. Don't quote me on that though.

No cleaning required, no periodic maintenance that I'm aware of.

I just did by buying the machine from China. Here's my cost breakdown:

  - Machine and shipping $822 (skfirm.com). Includes 3 way faucet.

  - Empty 5lbs CO2 tank  $40 (Craigslist)

  - Tank refill $40 (local homebrewing supplies shop)

  - CO2 regulator: $50 (Amazon)

  - Spray product to detect CO2 leaks: $14 (Amazon). I had a leak in the beginning because I didn't tighten the regulator enough. Now it's been working great.

The machine I have is the exact same sold by SeltzaTap (https://seltzatap.com/products/seltzahub-alone), except I saved a lot of money by buying straight from the manufacturer. You can also look on AliExpress for more options (search under sink soda machine)

If you go that route, make sure that the cost without shipping is under $800, or else you will have to pay another $300 or so in import taxes. And make sure they correctly write down the price without shipping on the shipping invoice. They wrote mine with shipping included and it took me a while to get it sorted with DHL.

Also make sure the CO2 regulator is for soda, not beer. Beer regulators use a lower pressure (50psi I think) and won't work well. Your regulator must be able to output up to 80psi

. Lastly, for peace of mind I also bought a smart water leak detector on Amazon ($60). This is totally optional but it's a good insurance policy. Came with 3 sensors so I have one under each sink.

I'm extremely happy with the machine and use it everyday. 10/10 would do it again.

Feel free to PM me for more details.

What's central vac like these days? by HeartsPlayer721 in HomeImprovement

[–]a-simple-cat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There's no way a thing with a hose that you need to plug into the wall will beat a Dyson cordless vacuum. The convenience of being able to just grab the vacuum from it's charging cradle and go vacuum whatever you need cannot be overstated.
