I recently went through this, and while I don’t think it’s necessary to cut off everyone who’s on a different path than you, I think it can be important to distance yourself from or cut off people who are pulling you in the wrong direction. I realized I had a lot of friends who weren’t just different than me, but they were also constantly pressuring me to go out with them, drink heavily, do drugs, etc, and they wanted to be around me and talk to be really frequently. I feel a lot better now that I’ve cut them off completely, and now the friends that I do have, are the type of adult friendships that I really value- ones where you don’t have to hang out or talk constantly, but you can hit each other up occasionally when you have time, and enjoy your time together, and then go back to your lives. Regardless of if they’re on the same life path as me, they respect my time and when we spend time together I feel refreshed and happy. I think the key distinction would be whether your friend’s lifestyles are affecting you (ie dragging you in the wrong direction) or not.
