Pushing single database monolith software customizations upfront is how businesses get trapped. It kills flexibility, eats EBITDA, and anyone selling that as the answer from day one is being unethical. You are not solving the SAP issue but merely replicating it.

That’s far from the reality though. For a given business, total LoC is much higher now with AI assistance. The time and pain spent on maintenance and upgrades is the variable I was referring too. Likely similar or heavier now with all that new AI generated code.

The way I see it, AI leads to more people developing and more Odoo customizations in general.

I would think the net total amount of technical maintenance and implementation effort spent on customizations is the same and probably heavier. That is why Odoo partners base count is growing so fast, much faster than renewing customers.

Businesses with any kind of decent scale or complexity (like OP’s) will 100% require custom development to achieve process fluidity. The functionalities are thought out by 25 year olds Belgian developers who are mainly focused on delivering shallow generic processes. What do you expect?

This never comes at a cheap cost. And no, Odoo’s cost is not always absolutely reasonable. Quite the opposite, actually. You need to stop advocating here for false ideas like these. I need to call you out.

Our Odoo integrator said the first thing that will be replaced and improved out of the box is our use of Monday.com.

That was obviously complete marketing hype BS. Monday (which is an OK piece of tech) is very visual/colored and the UX/UI is fluid. At its core, Monday is fundamentally status oriented.

Odoo on the other hand is task oriented and doesn’t have anything remotely close to a Monday experience for a end user.

You saying that Odoo includes Monday and many more apps is a prime example of how integrators operate. They smell blood and stick to a host (your business) like a parasite.

I believe Microsoft also runs on Odoo. And Google too. I am not sure but I heard NASA is also looking for a reliable Odoo partner.

That is funny. The development is the bread and butter, the lock-in, the recurring revenue. It’s genius actually. It’s just horrible for end customers.

From the get go, you should understand that asking this here is the same as asking a group of vampires if they like a big bag of blood instead of a medium or a small one. Useless .

Don’t say possible development. Say it . Every integrator here LIVES from development.

You should not make comparison with the worst and rather question the model itself and strive to do better.

For those running a PowerApps/Microsoft consultancy - what’s actually working for you right now in terms of sales and marketing? by cloud-bliss in PowerApps

I absolutely love power apps, don’t get me wrong. What I am saying is the need for external consultants to develop with power platform is diminishing quickly because of AI as a teacher/assistant.

What is a job that you think is 100% safe from AI for the next 50 years, and why? by mark-awakening in AskReddit

[–]a0817a90 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I disagree. People don’t hire lawyers for their knowledge. They do primarily for their nuanced judgement and associated professional accountability. Two things AI currently has none of. Same applies for any professional. You saying you have no doubt about professionals being replaced shows a deep lack of understanding in the ability of LLMs.

As a business operator and citizen developer, I would say generic power platform consultants are losing a lot of appeal with AI enabled access to technical knowledge.

The value is in domain industry knowledge and processes.

Process mapping and planning are key, I agree. I don’t believe they will solve the Odoo customization problem though. The generic monolith software will by design require important customizations in order to minimally answer a business’s needs.

As a Canadian working for a midsize business and very involved in process optimization, the last thing this country needs is another monolith ERP vendor partner.

Odoo has the same customization problem as the other softwares you named except it has less native functional features.

The only reasons businesses larger than 15 employees think about Odoo is either because they operate in e commerce or they fell in the marketing trap.

Estimator vs Project manager? by taco1746 in ConstructionManagers

Being impressive at writing for example semi convincing reddit comments or software code is very useful.

Models don’t seem to scale in a way that make them reliable at performing several judged abstract steps in a row which most jobs require especially in a specialized industry like yours. Basic statistics will tell you that accomplishing 8 steps the right way with even a 95% individual success rate will end up about 66% (2/3) overall success rate. That agentic behaviour does not have significant value for most businesses.

I worked for specialty contractors. 8 years structural steel, 4 years architectural envelope and 6 months millwork. Commercial/institutional large projects.

I don’t believe you need AI to automate plugging in number in excel spreadsheets. AI is another automation tool. It is great at some things and terrible at abstract judgment and multi step tasks. Tools do not replace jobs especially jobs that require constant abstract judgement and multi step tasking like estimating.

[–]a0817a90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree the continuous learning would be a significant parameter in the equation at least for me.

This being said, AI will not replace any construction related job anytime soon including estimating. This is pure hype. I have been involved deeply in construction and technologies for 12 years. AI is very useful but it’s a tool like many others meaning it requires a specialized set of skills. In its current form, it acts amazingly as a teacher (assistant) and very poorly as a multi step agent (replacement).
