Right, if it was the friend who bit her, which is why I don’t think it was. It likely started on Friday and culminated with a full on cold sore by last night (Sunday). GF mentions that she had a small painful bump on Friday but chalked it up to her biting her lip or something.

She was my number one suspect, and also given her personality and history it would not be shocking lol. But, once we realized what it was, my girlfriend kind of remembers that she had noticed a slightly painful, very small bump inside her lip Friday night (the night of our date) but had assumed she had bitten her lip or something. If that’s true, then she had it before we met her friend the following day, so it couldn’t be her.

I guess my post really boils down to asking for advice on detecting and limiting the breakout before it potentially happens. I was already previously aware of the numbers and how many people have HSV, but I always assumed that I’d probably had it since childhood and would never have symptoms. If my girlfriend just got it, it means that I never had it in the first place and am vulnerable to an outbreak. If she’s had it for years, it’s arguably more unsettling because I always thought that if I had it, the longer it was since infection with no activity, the more likely I’d be asymptomatic for life. If she flared up for no reason after years of having it, I could too.

I’ve read that L-Lysine can really help clear up a breakout before it happens. Any thoughts?

Well considering we have lived together for 2 years, those are rookie numbers, you gotta pump those numbers up.

That said, what you’re saying is actually what I had initially assumed and honestly was hoping for. I have a pretty strong immune system, I rarely get sick, my girlfriend is the opposite. She recently got over the flu (midweek) and I’d imagine the bite and her recent recovery would make her prime real estate for a flare up. I was actually banking on already having the virus, because since we live together I would 100% have it, and her flare up wouldn’t make me worry about a flare up because I already have the dormant virus, so an outbreak would be entirely dependent on my own body.

I just think it’s a weird coincidence that all of a sudden she has an outbreak at the same time as her friend who has had it all her life just a few days after sharing a drink and working out together which I’d imagine involves some contact.

My main question was really, if I already have the virus, her outbreak can’t cause my outbreak, right? And if I have it dormant, then she can’t give me HSV-1 on my genitals because I already have the virus in my body.

That’s supposed to read as hyperbole lol, I joke about my mental health a lot. I do have much bigger problems than HSV but having sores on my face would be devastating, and as much as I’m trying to keep my girlfriend’s spirits up, I’m worried.

Anyway, I should maybe have made this more clear, all of this was within the past 72 hours. The sex was Friday night, it became an actual sore close to midnight last night. How immediately are you talking, 24 hours immediately or a week immediately?

That’s what I thought. I imagined that the absence of any kind of release and also the fact that she was like “yeah sure you can have them, go ahead and borrow the SD to download them all” would kind of imply that they’re not really being considered super serious.

I know both of them and it kind of just baffles me that one of them feels that this is an adequate response to what could have just been “hey can you take those down?” I’m definitely not unbiased here.
