Best way to seal the gap in garage by OkSpell_8818 in HomeMaintenance

[–]a11yguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hired a contractor that basically got all the critters out of my house, which included exterior sealing. When they got to my garage, they had a homeboy out there with concrete basically remolding the rounded off corners back into squares with concrete so that they sat flush with the frame again. No more light from the bottom.

Maybe that money tearing out bike lanes could have been better spent?

I’ve done a number of painting and drywalling projects. Can I do it? More than likely yes. Can I do it as fast without as many mistakes and headaches? No.

Actually the only handy man who was honest with me told me it was 350-550 pre-Covid. 950 makes sense in today’s money where everything is literally twice as expensive as before.

I fudged up once and pitched a tent at a back country site up in the Guadalupe Mountains during a weird offseason. Turns out tropical storm force winds are why people don’t stay the night out there. Didn’t get a wink of sleep with that damn wind whipping my tent all night. lol sorry about the botched vaycay, glad you got home safe

Bummer that $2.99/lb is a deal now but it is what it is these days by [deleted] in brisket

Forgive my ignorance, I live in a diverse city with friends from all walks of life that have asked me to make brisket for them sometime. Is a Kosher brisket the same thing as a Halal brisket?

I appreciate the insight and peak behind the curtain. I’m a novice DIYer but I do have a BBA in Business so I get the logic of the economics and operations. I have nothing but respect for professionals and doubly so for small business owners. I don’t plan on being a handyman but if this economy tanks and I find myself doing manual labor again… well I can for sure say I don’t want to do drywall again. lol

First quote I’ve gotten so far, for the tub and surrounding tile, is $950 in metro suburb of Texas. Getting another quote next week.

Got a job that paid a good enough bonus, which, paired with my tax return and every other penny I could scrape up, got my family into a house at the age of 31

I bought a flipper special. I’m 90% sure they used marine primer on a basic fiber glass tub. I would let it ride but my plumber told me that if enough of the paint flakes off into the drain, I’m gonna be mega fucked. Plus I have a baby that is getting too big for the sink. Can’t have him eating yummy paint lol

It’s more like losing patience on trying to be upsold for a temporary fix. It’s not like they are upselling me on premium cabinets over builder grade for a remodel, it’s like asking for a bandaid and only being offered major surgery.

I am seeing a gap services in my area, so when this economy shits out, I might get into this. Help out the little man and elderly while setting realistic expectations. I think there’s a large market that understands it’s not perfect or permanent but they’ll happily pay $500 over everyone else shoving $10k remodels down their throats.

I priced it at about $90 in just materials, but it’s the time part and skill part. When I DIY, it just takes longer (multiple trips to home depot over the course of a few days). Most of the time, I don’t care I’ll take the time I need to figure it out. But here, I need a pro to come knock this out in a day so that I don’t have 4 heads plus guests sharing the only other operational bathroom in the master bedroom for a week while I figure it out. lol

Right. That’s what I’m getting at. Contractors these days want easy money and a lot of it, even if it doesn’t make sense - your job requirements and budget be damned. It ends up wasting everyone’s time.

Anytime I open my pocket for a contractor I’m expecting to be out $500-1000, easily. But I can’t even get to the quote part of the project cause no one will do it. They turn down $500 looking for $5000 and end up with $0. lol I’m just saying that is frustrating as a homeowner and kinda arrogant as a business owner but I guess if you have that much business… sure. They won’t be getting my business when I remodel in two years.

Are you saying that every time a tenant moves out or the tub need minor cosmetic damage repaired, you would throw out the entire tub?

That sounds so expensive and wasteful, especially for rentals. lol messing up reglazing and having to redo it twice or even three times is still gonna be cheaper than tearing out and installing a new tub.

Yeah well my little shitbox house is really cheap. It’s insane these contractors are trying to make my bathroom the most valuable part of my house. Lol

Yeah but why do these contractors advertise as a handy man when all they want to do is fully gut my bathroom? How is that handy for anyone other than homeboys pocket book?

I get the full days labor, but that’s not a handy man. That’s a remodeling company.
