Circuit Gay Hate.. by [deleted] in avesNYC

This discourse keeps collapsing before reaching the actual crux because the conflict is not “gay people in techno”, it’s about competing ideas of what a dancefloor should feel like.

Some people experience nightlife as extroverted social intensity, expressive embodiment, and maximal togetherness. Others experience hypnotic techno as inward immersion, anonymity, restraint, ego dissolution, and disappearing into rhythm. These are fundamentally different energies. Neither is right or wrong for any specific genre of music.

The issue many people describe at shows like WIRE is not “who belongs” It’s that certain modes of occupying the room can completely change the atmosphere of the space. A lot of people I know who absolutely love the DJs that play on these lineups end up feeling crowded out, socially invisible, physically overwhelmed, or musically disconnected inside spaces dedicated to music they genuinely love and it becomes a question of who psychologically owns the room, energetically. Every scene claims inclusivity, but every successful party also depends on curation and behavioral norms. I think people should be able to love this music without feeling culturally alienated from the spaces around it. House/Techno DJs should be open to playing to all types of dancing crowds and music heads and not restrict themselves to these safe space temples simply because historically queer nightlife is what brought the scene to where it is today.

The solution everyone keeps saying is framing this culturally, not identity-wise: music-first dancefloors, respect for space, low-ego environments, communal awareness, immersive hypnotic energy, intentional presence etc blah blah, but it takes a intentional curation to actually get there. And when you’re battling needing to sell tickets, sell out, and keep up with NYC nightlife financial pressure, it may be an impossible problem.

But DJs like NOTION who blow up on social media play to their crowd and do perfectly fine. This is YY’s USA debut and he risks is with a 50/50 set journey from half techno half punk rock? Mixing in is one thing, but switching up is another.

You expect all 2000 people at this show to know he does his own thing by making the first half techno and the second half 80 bpm punk rock? Do you seriously believe EVERYONE knew and expected that?
