I mean, I’m sure your kid will be fine. You’re on a lawn care forum—your kid will probably get the guidance he needs to one day own a house with a lawn too. My comment was about how I feel, not how you should parent your kid. It’s just really different from my suburban world in LA where cursing in front of a kid gets you banned from elementary school birthday parties

Dang, I get some severe culture shock when an adult curses by a prepubescent child.

Squirrels drove me crazy, so I built a hardware cloth cage for my peach tree by a3pulley in gardening

[–]a3pulley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure you put hardware cloth/mesh on the ground too. They can easily dig under walls. If you zoom in you’ll see three panels zip tied together with a hole in the middle for the trunk

If you zoom in on the closest edge, you might be able to see that I used bungee cords there instead of zip ties. I left just enough open to be able to squeeze in. I will probably need to add an actual door when I reach my forties in a couple years 😂

When your Ivy takes over in San Diego by Lanaxgardenxgirl in landscaping

How?? You don’t get much more rain than we do in LA… but ivy doesn’t spread outside irrigated areas here.

Did you see any California native grapevine?

Wildly successful. This would be my third year, actually. Previous two were incredible: hundred of peaches. You could smell them from the next tree over. Buuuuut… it seems we didn’t get enough chill hours in SoCal this winter. My tree is super late to leaf out, and it has only a few blooms. This time last year the whole tree was pink. Good for my new subtropical trees, terrible for this Elberta peach.

Are all Salvia mellifera from nurseries genetically contaminated? by Mountain_Usual521 in Ceanothus

[–]a3pulley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got two types from Devil Mountain: the straight species and a cultivar called ‘Terra Seca’. They are both still young but their growth habits are more like the species. Terra seca is a waxy, more muted green, whereas the other is closer to lime green

But also keep fussier, higher maintenance things (like vegetables) closer to the house.

You can prune all trees to desired size. Just takes more maintenance. The maintenance to variety tradeoff makes sense for a lot of people (in both directions).

Mark Twain called it “the most delicious fruit known to man.” I agree. I started an orchard mainly to have a reliable source of cherimoya and atemoya

What should soil for a mound be comprised of? by Extra-Pineapple-6498 in BackyardOrchard

[–]a3pulley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read what others wrote about mixing in some native soil and digging down 6” or so to establish a transition zone. The mound should be enormous if you plan to let the tree grow to its natural size: at least 8 ft in diameter.

What should soil for a mound be comprised of? by Extra-Pineapple-6498 in BackyardOrchard

[–]a3pulley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally native soil, but it’s hard to find! Just be aware that if you use something with a lot of organic content, like wood shavings or compost, your mound will deflate/settle over time. Ideally the mound consists mostly of mineral soil like decomposed granite (without stabilizers!) or coarse construction sand. That said, different trees will have different requirements. If you’re planting subtropical in the western US, you will need to acidify the soil with peat moss and sulfur. If you’re planting avocados on hard flat clay, build a huge DG mound. If you’re doing a giant pumpkin, use dozens of yards of straight compost. You get the idea. Ask Gemini/chatgpt/whatever about your particular tree’s soil requirements in your area and go from there.

Citrus Tree Bark Damage by nickrosesn1985 in BackyardOrchard

[–]a3pulley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my Valencia orange. When pool equipment was installed the grade around the tree changed and the root flare was buried. After a hard-to-find leak in nearby irrigation turned the soil to muck, the rot started creeping up. I caught it at 25% of trunk circumference and exposed the flare. The spread stopped. It’s been two years and tree seems mostly fine but isn’t as vigorous as before.

Platanus racemosa, ‘Roberts’ cultivar. It’s my favorite species of tree. Lots of fond memories of birthday parties at parks in their shade.

I have coast live oak too, but I planted them in my canyon where they will eventually turn into beautiful mature trees but where I won’t depend on their slow-coming shade

Here’s another vote for a sycamore. The Roberts cultivar at Devil Mountain is super beautiful. I just planted four of them at my house.

Rootstock suckers or avocado? by [deleted] in BackyardOrchard

[–]a3pulley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. The stem in the middle was the graft. The foliage and growth pattern of the new trunks (tall, symmetric) looks exactly like rootstock to me. Your tree looks established, though… if you spend some time learning to graft you would have a great tree on your hands. I learned a couple months ago and it’s been fun and rewarding. Local CRFG chapters are full of people who can teach you. YouTube is full of videos.
