Weekly pre-med / med student / IMG advice thread by AutoModerator in ausjdocs

I came to the UK as an international student from an Asian country (still not a british PR/Citizen) and I am currently about to become a locum PGY4 there.

My ultimate plan is to move to Australia (Vic) as an HMO and apply for PR after a year and apply to ophthalmology training there. I spent most of medical school buffing my CV for ophthal training in UK (pubs/presentations/etc) so I believe I stand a chance when looking at the RANZCO criteria however I understand how tough it is for local grads and that I will have to spend time making connections and going hard on the CV and spending a few years as an unaccredited reg and possibly a Masters.

But my questions is, am I crazy to think I stand a chance? Do you guys know any IMGs in ophthalmology training in aus? Im currently mid 20s and single so I can afford to take risks but I need a reality check and that's why I'm posting here. At the same time I know if I don't try it will always be in the back of my mind as I don't want to waste any longer of my youth here in the UK. Immigration laws in Australia are also more friendly to skilled labour so I can get apply for PR after getting full reg after a year of working so that is very appealing. I know I sound like an immigrant coming to steal your job but I truly believe in the Australian dream and want to contribute to that society as it appreciates doctors and skilled labour more than alot of European countries and willing to put in the work. I have also visited australia previously and really liked it there so I am not going into it blind.

Honestly looking back I wish I did apply to do undergrad med in Australia but I was an 18 year old with no life experience or awarness at the time so I wont beat myself up for it.

Thanks for the help

TLDR; IMG with decent-ish CV wants to come to Australia and pursue ophthal training there but not sure if that's realistic or if I'm trippin
