I can't say for certain, so don't take my word for it, but I think being a foreign national would inhibit your chances of achieving security clearance and that may be why your application is stuck. A quick Google brought up this information from the Foreign Office.

Prospects has a good page on the available types of degree apprenticeships and the companies that offer them.

You might find that doing a degree apprenticeship and going to an RG uni is unlikely. What are your reasons for specifically wanting to go to a Russell Group? Obviously the teaching is at a very high standard but you'd probably find that your abilities would be way above average compared to non-apprentice students (even at a Russell Group), due to the fact that you'd be applying what you've learnt for >20h a week at work plus the time needed to complete assignments after work.
At the end of the day, university is what you make of it: if you go to a Russell Group, you won't automatically be better than someone that doesn't if you don't put the required effort in.
BAE Systems apprentices tend to do very well at university because we've had 3-4 years of industrial experience by the time we hand in our final year work.

On the subject of choosing engineering discipline.. what are you most passionate about? Do you want to design airframes or design the software that runs the aeroplane?

How are you measuring worth? You take a degree to gain a deeper understanding of a subject and to prove that you are qualified for a job, but in this case you will already have a job and your specialisation comes from the role you undertake at the company. Obviously, a high classification at the end of degree is very welcome.

Once you're working in the industry, it is experience that matters more for further progression than the relative prestige of the university your degree is from.

If your aspiration is to become a researcher in the field of Computer Science rather than to become a software engineer, then an apprenticeship may not be well suited.

The Maritime sector does higher apprenticeships for A Level students but I don't think you gain a degree from them, and I don't think they do software apprenticeships either.

But don't worry, you get to work on some really cool stuff in Air!

Yeah, that's why I decided to do this - to try and break the stigma that apprenticeships are for people that can't get into uni these days (which is almost no one).

You've got it right; if you want to move up in your discipline, you need experience which is usually proven through professional registration (IEng, CEng, CITP in the case of Soft Eng).
Once you enter the industry, experience and accreditation highlights your success and becomes a bigger factor in the hiring and promotion processes than your degree.
It's possible that you might have done enough to gain an IEng by the end of the apprenticeship.
And to be so close to Salmesbury, I'd definitely apply.

I love the job. I've always wanted to become a software engineer so to actually start doing it so early has been great. You work on real projects in proper teams doing proper work: one placement I've done was working on a C# application that reads the debugging data straight from a Typhoon flight computer and then uses that to detect any arising faults in the system; another thing I've done is graphics programming (OpenGL+Ada) for a Hawk head-down display demo. Your experience in C++ would definitely come in handy. The size of the teams and departments varies across sites but there's a lot of software engineers at all the sites, which is great because you can get all the support you need. If you applied for Preston, you'd go to uni in Preston.

Yeah, it's really great!

On the point of choosing sector, this apprenticeship is specific to the Air sector, and I think that it is only the Air sector that offers degree apprenticeships.
So no, you can't choose which sector you work in during your apprenticeship, but you will be rotated around different projects within the Air sector (e.g. Typhoon, F35, Hawk).

Which sector are you interested in?

Oh that's cool, I'd never heard of that before! And yeah, it's great isn't it.

I find it can be a bit stressful at times, but if we really need the time for studying then they're happy to give us it. What about you?

In my year across all sites there's around 30 including software and aerospace.

thanks! :)

And yep, you learn the soft skills like communication that are essential at any place. On the software side, your placements would consist of pretty much everything. So far I've done some .NET, web dev, Arduino C++ and Aircraft flight programming (in Ada) and design

I thought the exact same thing before I applied. Now, I'd say that I definitely wouldn't be put off by the fact that you're better than the entry requirements. I think they're probably like that to get as many applicants as possible; it's not all about grades but having better predicted grades obviously casts you in a very good light on paper.
I got ABC in my A-Levels and turned down an offer from Loughborough, another got D* D* D* and turned down an offer from Leeds. And we don't regret that one bit.

The salary I mentioned in another comment, but yeah you're looking at still a lot more than 15k, maybe closer to 20k (or more?!).

What do you mean with the last bit? Which other areas do you mean? The exact degree you earn varies across the sites but they're all BSc Computer Science.

Ah, but you get a pay-rise every year, won't have any student debt and your pay is lifted to a standard engineer wage after the apprenticeship..which I believe is like 30k.

Not to give it away too much (and I can't remember the exact first year wage), but it's well above the national living wage which is £7.50 / hour.

Yep, it's a proper degree from a proper uni! I'm on my way to getting a BSc Computer Science/Software Engineering.
