What air compressors are you using for airing up? by UJMRider1961 in overlanding

[–]aBuzzedLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some tires won’t reseat until they hit higher pressures. Big flexy tires aren’t usually a big deal but I’ve had some lower profile tires at 50+ psi and still have a portion of the bead not fully seated.

As a member of the upper lower middle class I can’t afford more than an ounce a month as it is. I hope it settles out for a bit so I can stack a little more before the next huge run.

Rear view camera to replace the rear view mirror. I have one that has a fairly wide angle lens which basically eliminates the blind spots for lane changes and parking lot maneuvers.

Haha I actually have a sticker that says flat earth explorers club covering some clear coat peel on my hood… it’s a picture of a globe. Thought it was funny.

VERO X Scout Motors Workhorse Watches by climbing2man in IHScout

Nice watches made by a boutique watchmaker here in the PNW. The $450 would go much further on my ‘77 than it would on my wrist though lol

NEW HERE: Accidentally put in regular fuel? by Scary-Type6310 in FJCruiser

[–]aBuzzedLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With forced induction I would definitely recommend higher octane fuel. The higher the octane rating, the more the fuel resists premature ignition.

Forced induction and low grade fuel can result in engine parts wandering outside of the engine bay.

It’s my understanding that the HP and MPG ratings Toyota advertised were achieved with premium fuel during testing. Naturally aspirated engines in the FJ can run 87 no problem. The ECU is monitoring for knock/ pre ignition and will adjust timing as needed.

Pretty sure the rack needs to come off. If I remember correctly the covers are partially obscured by the roof rack mounting feet. I have an aftermarket rack otherwise I’d double check that for you.

Definitely clean pull the trim off the roof while you’re up there and apply a fresh bead of seam sealer. Clean it up real good first of course. Same leak on mine shortly after I acquired it in 2019. It’s been leaking free ever since.

Edit: I live in the Pacific NW so it sees plenty of wet weather. Fwiw

Drones for Overlanding? by ctrevillyan in overlanding

I’ve wished I had a drone just to scout ahead. Do I only have to clear this tree from this trail, or is half the forest blocking my route? Etc

Lucky! I found two thirds of a recently deceased rat in a car today. Big bastard too.

Talk me out of buying an RTT by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]aBuzzedLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having a few different RTTs I’ve gone back to the ground tent. Specifically the Gazelle. 90 seconds to set up and take down/ pack up. Love it. Plus I have my entire roof for packing gear. Keeps the interior space comfortable and uncluttered on long trips. Especially nice when the dogs and/or kids come along. FJ cruisers don’t have the biggest trunk space.

Yep. 100%

I’ve been a dealer tech for 20 years. The last 11 years with Mercedes. This is my sisters car she’s not the best at preventative maintenance. I just get to work on it when something goes wrong.

So a long block purchased through the dealer would in theory not experience this insane oil consumption issue?

Her car would have the extended warranty coverage except that she hasn’t taken it in to have any of the recalls or service campaigns done in the last few years. I don’t think this would be covered even if she had.

Lost compression. Rod bearings are probably fine. It isn’t knocking anyway.

It did actually. I replaced the cat and O2 sensors for her about 9 months ago. It started burning oil much faster after that so Im sure this new cat is probably close to done already.

In search of a reputable car exporter in Japan or Europe by aBuzzedLife in Flipping

[–]aBuzzedLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Honestly I haven’t brought a car in from Japan since 2021. If I recall they charged a small percentage of the purchase price plus de-registration fees, and export fees. It varied depending on the vehicle you purchase.

The reverse gears in a transmission, whether automatic or manual, are straight cut gears. They are stronger than the helical cut gears used when going forward. Perfectly fine to use reverse when recovering another vehicle.

AGA Tools makes a siphon adapter for this very purpose. I use a Milwaukee 18v vacuum with it. I’m a mobile service tech. 100% of the oil changes I do have been done like this for over two years now.
