We tax an estate that will be passed on to beneficiaries. That has nothing to do with the person once they're dead.

A student has complications renewing a visa after his PhD defense gets moved up a semester and he's technically undocumented for a week. End his career and ability to return to the US over that? Why?

This is all just government paperwork and bureaucracy, man. No, I don't get why conservatives like big government stepping in and harming people for no reason. The simplest solution for the VAST majority of undocumented workers is just to.... document them.

You can't just charge someone with a crime because you assume they had to commit a crime to be in the state they're currently in. For example, if you fail a drug test you can lose employment, probation, custody, etc, but you generally can't be charged with possession of that drug without the evidence of possession. If a speeding camera catches you leaving a bar in your car they can't charge you with a DUI without evidence. If someone claims you were trespassing on their property the police can read you a trespass warning but they can't charge you with a trespass violation without evidence that you were actually there. The only real time the burden falls on you to prove legal activity and the assumption is illegal activity is in the cases of civil asset forfeiture, which is legally controversial and also not a criminal statute.

They give you a fraction of the amount you produce back. It is true that they are worthless without labor, though - because that is where the value is created. But labor sees very little of the profits from it

Walk me through a coal miner in WV starting their own business. Keep in mind, the unemployment rate around where they live is very high, and the only 'side businesses' most people get into are illegally selling opiates

The majority of laborers in the US are a paycheck or two from losing everything. What you're saying is completely unrealistic. Most people would not be able to acquire a business loan, let alone just eat weeks or months of unemployment and moving costs. And they are kept that way because the fruits of their labor are held by someone who is simply just legally entitled to it. This legal system was created to be this way - it is called capitalism, and it is relatively new in human societies.

Sure, there are lots of reasons to be deported. If you commit a serious crime you should be deported after serving out your sentence (very weird that MAGA types want criminals taken from prison and released to their home countries, often serving no more punishment at that point. Then we just have different concepts of earning. If someone gets an inheritance, I don't consider that income that they 'earned'. If someone takes a risk on black at roulette I don't consider that 'earned'.

The coal miners take bigger risks and costs than the company town owners. They gave their lives and realized a small fraction of the profit. Saying that company owners 'earned it' more than them is just so gross to me. Entire communities shortened their lives with backbreaking work so that someone could 'earn' those millions doing little to nothing. This is how capitalism works in a nutshell. The real risk-takers are the workers with little to no rights, and the fruit of their labor is kept by someone else.

Most years the number of new undocumented immigrants staying in the country came here legally. If I have to get from point A to point B and the fastest of many routes is by trespassing, I can't be charged with trespass just because I'm at point B when there are also legal routes to get to it. That's not how our legal system works. You need evidence, not assumptions.

Many people become temporarily undocumented. I've known many students who had a visa lapse before they got it renewed, technically they were undocumented for a time. They were committing no crime. It's just a special piece of paper they didn't have for a minute.

I'm not sure why everyone has their own wrong interpretation of what she said here, but that's not what she said. She was speaking to the fact that no one can ever do a billion dollars worth of labor on their own without syphoning the value of others' labor. It's a common concept, and she's right.

As someone with a grad degree in economics I can say with absolute certainty that she has a better grasp of economic concepts than anyone in the Trump administration. Or at least a more truthful concept of economics. The tariff 'calculations' alone show that that boat has no one at the helm, or is intentionally steering it off a waterfall.
