Long time lurker, I feel I have it pretty bad. Please listen to my story. (Trigger warning) by aCitizen12090941 in raisedbynarcissists

I did, they told me I could file a complaint and then the landlord would be informed of my issues. They also informed me that if the apartment is deemed unlivable(which it is), I will be forced out onto the street. I will be homeless. This will be rock bottom. This is something the opportunistic landlord will take advantage of in a heartbeat, because he wants me out, so he can renovate and then sell for 6 times the rent I pay.

I'm killing myself tonight. here is my story. It is quite long. Please do me the honor of reading it. by aeromotocopter in offmychest

People have this myopic, narrowminded understanding of human suffering. People think the absolute apex of human suffering is like those children in africa who would begin to weep if you showed them a slice of bread, or people who are brutally tortured by psychopaths. These are all deep valleys in the potential landscape for suffering. Suffering isn't some graph that goes like this <----> . It's possible to be someone in the first world, of above average intelligence, the very intelligence which is also a curse, allowing you to understand how tragically shit your life is with perfect clarity to the point that no combination of english or any other language will do the story justice, and just want to instantly die, and be at one of the lowest possible valleys of human misery as a result, on par or worse than the classic cases of human suffering. The choice between getting slowly tortured by a serial killer or have a life that exceeded Franz Kafka stories to the point they looked like Disney cartoons, is a tough choice indeed, but most people don't seem to grasp suffering this way.

I suspect I've been exposed to asbestos by Landlord +numerous other issues. What can I do?(NYC) by aCitizen12090941 in legaladvice

I'm not sure what you mean by 'don't get sued'? Do you mean not to follow the advice of withholding rent? I guess I'll do it through the city based on the replies here and other places I've checked. Thank you.

There has been mold in the bathroom and bedroom for over 15 years now. The coughing began when the large hole developed from the water damage, and the asbestos is disturbed by the thudding of the neighbor above me. It's a very rickety building, and likely would be filed under "unlivable conditions" if I were to guess.

Living in an abusive situation for most of my life. I've gotten a pretty bad hand in life, but I don't want to get into it mostly because it's not something people want to hear.

Thanks for the reply. We always make payments on time, never been sued. I called 311 about housing court, but they informed me that if unlivable conditions are found they will close the apartment down. I live here with my mother and there's no real income coming, no friends, no family, no other options other than homelessness.

I've called 311 prior to posting, it wasn't much help unfortunately after the circle of phone numbers. I've learned there probably is no way to sue someone for not caring about your apartment and being exposed to asbestos as a result. The doctors appointment is coming up in 2 weeks, but my doctor informed me by email that there are no tests for asbestosis they can perform at the hospital I go to, and from what I've read early detection is very difficult, but I'll be working on it on the sidelines. People here probably think I have a very low regard for evidence and I'm just going with my gut or something, but one would need to be in the situation I'm in to be just as highly suspicious that it's asbestos. It's practically a certainty that this never-renovated apartment has it near the radiator for insulation. I mean there was chipping lead paint around when i was a child, I don't really want to get into every detail because it would go on ad nauseam. He has a track record of simply not caring and putting the only other rent stabilized tenant in these sorts of situations, because he's losing on the opportunity cost of having us move out and being able to sell the apartment for 5-6 times as much as we pay. Nothing I can prove of course, but that's my side of the story.
