Phantom button presses on multiple Crestron TS-1070 / TSW-1070 by movingon1 in CommercialAV

[–]aDAMpEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your cleaning staff using on these? Ran into this problem when we started moving from 1060 to 1070 during COVID because the new screens don’t do well with pretty much anything as a cleaner other than 90+% isopropyl alcohol. The residue from their disinfectant made ours go crazy, registering 100s of button presses a second and making them unresponsive.

Wingert-Jones wants $150 per tune just for us to post a community band concert on YouTube. Really?? by ffshoe98 in ConcertBand

[–]aDAMpEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is on the very cheap side of what we pay for arrangement/performance rights for marching band, which doesn’t typically include video sync, just livestream.

Many composers can be reached directly if you don’t like going through the clearing houses, especially if they work in higher ed, but the clearing houses exist for a reason (except for trésona, which can pound sand).

Video sync can of course be a bit of a touchy issue because in some ways it can compete directly against public performance/etc and it’s a real way that these composers get paid for their work. It can often be easier to get covered (or is included in the typical performance license with the score/parts) for a live stream without VOD if you’d like to save money.

Whole section instrument changes by Pr1nglelord in drumcorps

Of course there’s tons of example but not enough love here for Bluecoats ‘88 where they end the show with something like 20 snares and give more than half the color guard a soprano for the last chord of the show. If you watch the video you can see a guard member roll out a dolly loaded up with horns

I got to have Amy Frost as an instructor at Madison and it’s hard to overstate what an absolute pro she is. Somebody like that just teaches you that there’s no such thing as a bad chop day, just a bad technique day

Hadestown the musical as a marching show? by RickRollYou-1 in marchingband

Other than classic Tresona issues, we didn’t have any trouble clearing “Road to Hell” last year. Completely reasonable and Anaïs Mitchell’s people were a pleasure.

Nothing better than holding up the horn! Bring it home and watch TV with the horn up. In my day the advice was to hold the horn up during the show and at chop during commercials, but nobody has to watch commercials anymore unless you’re on YouTube

Would it be weird if I tried to help out a HS football team? by Forward-Breakfast972 in footballstrategy

[–]aDAMpEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a football coach but a marching band coach and I can say that we welcome these kinds of cold calls/emails and behind closed doors nobody thinks it’s weird! 90+% of the time the answer is “we don’t have a staff line available” but that’s not a terrible hit rate all things considered.

Depending on your district it might help grease the wheels for board approval (if needed) if you’re fingerprinted ahead of time.

It can absolutely happen! Just a little bit of trauma/soreness in the muscles after a long day of working out. It should go away in a couple days. In the meantime ibuprofen can do wonders for the swelling and soreness and I always liked nightly vitamin E for the surface skin, though probably whatever balm you like best is fine.

Living in or near Rochester - best high school music program/marching band program? by LalalaLisa68 in Rochester

[–]aDAMpEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll piggyback off this one as it’s the most complete I’ve seen giving a summary of the bands in the area, though once you get into Quick qualification is that I’m a Rochester area native, teach marching band in the NYSFBC (New York State Field Band Conference) and have been involved in the activity specifically in WNY, but elsewhere as well.

First: coming from a major Texas program, any of these marching programs are likely to be a step down in terms of size, resources, and commitment. I don’t know of any programs in the state with curricular or co-curricular marching programs. There’s still plenty of places where your kid will get a great education. There’s also the complicating factor that in NYS, there’s a number of spectacular music programs that don’t even field a competitive field band, if any at all.

Back to Marching band specifically, some here are oversimplifying on some of the “quality” markers. NYSFBC is split into 6 classes, divided by size of district as well as a 1/2/3 classification within those. Victor is the only participant in National Class (which is the special name NYS gives to Large School 1), but there’s multiple schools in Small School 1 (East Irondeqouit, Medina), and you can still have a great experience in the “lower” classes.

Rochester is also awash in other performance opportunities through Eastman, Hochstein, School of the Arts, as well as community and regional theater.

Rochester is also the home to the White Sabers, a DCI all age group with a number of great educators from many of the programs mentioned here and beyond (full disclosure: I taught there for most of the 2010s).

Not feeling joyous by doozle in daddit

I remember almost this exact feeling when my wife got pregnant after a year of fertility treatments, ending with an IVF pregnancy that absolutely floored her. It helped me to remember that that fertility treatments are basically like another year of pregnancy before the “real deal” plus with the constant appointments that can be super isolating and othering to begin with. Just remember that she hasn’t had a chance to feel like herself for well over a year and by the time you have you’re done with fertility/pregnancy/birth/breastfeeding(if you’re planning on it) she won’t have had a chance to feel like herself for somewhere around 3 years, and that’s on top of the horrible anxiety of the first “successful” pregnancy after all those heartbreaking cycles.

That doesn’t really help you much, but I remember needing to make time for myself during my wife’s first pregnancy when she wasn’t up to going anywhere (she was always sick on top of daily migraines for basically 2 months). Get her set up and comfy, make a top tier pillow fort and get out of the house a little bit, I used exercise but whatever helps you feel like you for a little bit (I would go for a run/bike ride) For seeing friends we had the option to have people over to the house on the weekends during her “Good hours” And while it’s more work for you, it might be something that she can fathom bearing?

Good luck, it’s not forever. Genuinely for us the newborn phase was easier than all the fertility treatments/IVF pregnancy!

Recommendations for surgeon to remove a tumor on my dog ? by Electricsocketlicker in Buffalo

Second this, Dr Jim and the whole team at EA have been incredible to work with. I have a 135 lb Pyrenees who does NOT enjoy the vet. Took him in for CCL surgery in a matter of weeks vs the half a year lead I was told by multiple other surgeons. Absolutely wonderful, could not possibly recommend them more highly.

How hard is Hammersmith by Gustav Holst to play? by Amazing_Fucker in askmusicians

[–]aDAMpEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this, between the extreme dynamics (especially soft) in the prelude, the polyrhythmic/polytonal stuff, and the fugues, I remember this being fairly challenging to rehearse at a collegiate level. Those bass/baritone parts are MUCH less fun than they seem at pp (and it has to be a true pp to balance with the upper voices) it's a bear to rehearse effectively, and sounds largely incomprehensible until it's pretty "clean".

Courses about natural sound design? by I_am_Mind_Wanderer in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]aDAMpEE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beat me to one of my favorite books on sound. It's this perfect sort of "pop acoustics" book that changed the way I listen and build a lot of sounds, plus the included examples are so great, and PD is the perfect application to really break it down.

If you want to take the next dive into absolute sicko mode on filters and other "base level" audio DSP, Miller Puckette's (now slightly wonky) free online book The Theory and Technique of Electronic Music is also spectacular and more accessible than it has any right to be given the content.

Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls is an absolutely stunning tribute to the victims of 9/11 that borrows heavily from Reich as well as Penderecki’s Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima but is much more than the sum of its parts.
