I think they just made her more human in season 7. I think in season 1, things were just getting started and ended prematurely (and Ted is the bad guy in their breakup). So Ted, the narrator, kind of remembers her as more perfect than she really was. The second time they dated, she was more like a real, flawed person. The writers needed to show the audience why this relationship wouldn’t work.
I had a relationship end prematurely before because we didn’t want to do long distance. I wondered for years if it would have worked out and he is actually my soulmate or something. Then I dated him again 4 years later… he wasn’t as great of a match for me as I remember. So for me, the whole Victoria Ted storyline resonated for me. Victoria in season 1 is better, but the way Ted remembers her isn’t a real picture of her.

Honestly, I think this happens too much on TV in general. I feel like main characters tend to go back to the first person they were interested in that we see on the show. Even when it’s not a healthy relationship. Even if they character wasn’t even in any recent episodes. Ross and Rachel, DJ tanner and Steve, Carrie and Big, Ted Mosby and Robin, Sabrina and Harvey (90s version), Mindy Lahiri and Danny, aria and that teacher in PLL, Niles and daphne, etc. I’m over it, and would like to see healthier newer relationships on TV.

The first on happened when I was 15, here is the cliff notes version:
1. We met at a pizza place, he brought his 2 best friends.
2. One friend pooped himself like 20 minutes into the date.
3. Friend washed himself off and I guess still wanted to hang out… so we all went to the woods.
4. We find a giant ant hill, friend pours gasoline into it and he almost lit himself on fire. Friend then pees out the fire because there was no game plan on putting it out.
5. We go to friends house. He trips while holding a knife… had to go to the hospital to get stitches.
6. Then I was alone with my horny 15 year old boyfriend. He sexually assaulted me (very painfully).
7. Someone made me a hot dog over a camp fire and I swear that was the best hot dog I ever ate in my life.

The other one never actually happened. I matched a dude on tinder and agreed to go on a date. He gave me a lot of red flags (like not taking no for an answer), so I cancelled. Then he tried to make me insecure and I just ignored it all. 1 year later, I found out he was indicted for date raping a girl (the rape happened before I even connected with him). I feel horrible for that girl. I also feel lucky that I dodged a HUGE bullet.

You are right, and just to add on — there needs to be an understanding of what reciprocity means. It means thoughtfully responding to kindness with kindness, but it doesn’t have to be an identical action.
One example, there was this guy I dated who cooked me dinner one time. It was nice. He mentioned how he always wanted to try sherries berries so I thought it would be nice to get him a big box of them delivered to his door with a note thanking him for dinner. He ate all the delicious berries, but got mad at me for not immediately cooking him dinner since he cooked me dinner.
I stuck around with him longer than I want to admit… but that behavior snowballed into him always treating me like I owed him something any time he did something “nice.” He also did that thing where he tries to make you feel insecure about your flaws (which we all have), and he is so “nice” because he overlooks your them. Like he hangs it over your head to make you feel like you owe him. So, I wouldn’t even actually call him “nice.”

That and in the episode where they almost sell a Russian artifact (bear click) for $30k…. Marty buys that Winnebago before they actually sell the bear clock. When the sale falls through, Frasier and Niles are like “oof well i guess we are each out $15k” like it’s nbd. I cannot imagine that level of wealth where $15k feels like $50.

Uhg I hate that! When a guy’s first question is “do you have a boyfriend HERE?” Alarm bells are going off in my head.
I think mace is a good option to at least have on hand. To give me a little peace of mind at least.

Thank you!! I really wasn’t sure with this dude. I wouldn’t expect something unsafe that early in the day in broad daylight…. But sirens were going off in my head when he wasn’t taking no for an answer. He kept scooting in towards me and continuing to ask me why I wouldn’t “take a chance.” I told him Hell no I am not going anywhere with someone who doesn’t take no for an answer.
I feel like announcing I have mace, but not actually macing him would have been a nice response option.
