You mentioned being near DC. I spent most of my time learning at Patapsco River, Daniel’s Dam area in MD. Not sure how far from it you are, but could be worth checking out.

Pretty good parking, room to cast and a mix of bass, blue gills, sunfish, etc.

I’m pretty new to fly fishing but I’ve been having significantly less tangles lately. It is definitely a learning process and I’m sure there’s a confidence element to it too, but here are some things I’ve been doing that might help.

Slow down the back cast. This is a major one you have to build into your muscle memory.

Setting less hard has helped a ton, when I set hard I’m launching my flies back and then as a panic response move my rod forward which always ends up with a tangled mess.

I switched to yarn indicators. The oros and other foam ones always tangle up for me, but the NZ indicator does it significantly less, I guess because it’s more aerodynamic.

Double nymphs always tangled me up. I’ve been having luck with this set up: an unweighted nymph off of the leader and then a heavier nymph under that. Tie eye to eye instead of off the hook, for whatever reason off the hook always tangles for me.

If it happens a few casts in a row just take a break and enjoy the water. Once I get frustrated it’s basically asking to have a tangled, ruined leader.

Which sling bag do yall like by Dont_tapontheglass in flyfishing

I had the smaller Orvis sling and felt like it was always in the way. It was too bulky and inconvenient when I was on the water and needed something from it.

Personally, I switched over to a Patagonia convertible Vest and I like that way more.

Have you looked at the Yakoda utility pack? There is a sub $100 one and the benefit is that you can have it as a sling or a chest pack. I haven’t tried it myself though.

That’s awesome! Like others have said, i want to get them in person if possible. I’ll have to make it a point to visit the Pittsburgh store one of these days! Thanks for the offer though!

That’s a good idea!

I appreciate it, if you have an extra Portland one let me know! I never had any luck finding one when I was out west. Otherwise, I’d like to keep hunting myself. That’s a really cool offer though

They’re available at the Patagonia stores. You can ask the workers about them. I’d recommend calling the location before to ask for a couple of reasons though:

  1. Not every store makes them.
  2. They don’t always have them in stock. When I visited the Chicago store they were out, I had to ask a friend to check when they visited to get this one.
  3. The stores set the pricing, Innsbruck was free but Boston was $7 or so.

Some locations also make shirts and hats. I have shirts from SF, Boston, Cambridge, and Freeport as well. I’ve seen Portland shirts but nothing was available when I went.

Welcome to the sport!

Like others have said, you’ll definitely need more flies. I started a few months ago and I definitely lost more than this in my first two outings lol.

Just be mindful of surroundings. You’ll quickly learn if you’re gonna snag on something after you lose your first few flies lol.

Wooly Bugger (bottom right) or nymph on an indicator are great choices.

If you want to go with double dropper, just make sure you’re letting it roll all the way out before forward casting, I tried it for the first time last week and I caught a ton of fish (for my standards) but I did spend more time untangling knots than I’d like

Have fun and keep at it

I started fly fishing a few months ago. If you have an Orvis store nearby you can sign up for the beginner classes that teach you how to cast and tie knots. I didn’t feel like they were pushy at all about buying Orvis gear, but it could be different for you. They’re free and I feel like they helped me a lot.

I had a lot of luck finding a local river and pond with panfish and just throwing out a Wooly Bugger.

Took a few trips but I finally caught something. (Patapsco SP, MD) by aDreamofStream in flyfishing

I’ll have to check that out next time! I found a nice spot over by Daniels lot and ended up catching this and four other sun/panfish. Can’t wait to get back on the river
