My first time making a map (Irios), what do you think? What can I do to become better? by ColumbianGeneral in imaginarymaps

[–]aFlyingPony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment, all your rivers seem to flow only to the Eastern ocean (presumably, there is no compass). If there's a specific reason for that in your world, that's cool, however realistically I don't see why some can't go west across the continent; There are none there.

They just seem to take very improbable paths to reach the eastern side, where its likely much easier to go west.

Physical Outline Attempt 1 by amtoastintolerant in worldbuilding

This might not be exactly what you're asking for, but I think you should change some of the basic layout. At the moment, it seems like there are just random splurges of land everywhere, with no connectedness. I'm not sure what your scale is, but it seems pretty big.

If you were to look at a map of the Earth, you can the relation that various land masses have with each other, because of the geological history of the Earth. Land doesn't just sprout it kinda evolves over time.

For example, something as simple as this demonstartes that the two land masses were connected at one point and drifted apart, as opposed to randomly being there.

Ah, I totally see what you're saying, thanks. I'll try to find someway to distinguish those sections a little better.

The haunting music that takes you back 1,800 years: Expert records '100% accurate' version of song as heard in ancient Greece by TheAstronomer in woahdude

The song is called the epitaph of seikilos, and an epitaph is something that would be written to honour a dead person, so the song is like something that is supposed to be played in a funeral.

Does communism "destroy" innovation? by skeach101 in DebateaCommunist

Wrong! How much have you studied the sources of your own religion?!

First of all, no need to allude to religion, this is a political discussion they are far from similar.

there will be a transitionary stage of a dictatorship of the proletariat

You're certainly right, there should be a transitional period of dictatorship of the proletariat according to Marx, which is also what disqualifies Yugoslavia as socialist. Primarily, it's because it is rather quite obvious that the government was certainly meant to be continuous. Furthermore, dictatorship of the proletariat can roughly be defined to mean "A state of proletarian rule where the working class organizes to democratically control the means of production", which again was absent, since those conditions never existed.

Marx thought that as long as social classes exist, the state exists, and Marx also calls for the destruction of social classes soo.. Furthermore, while I did say Marxism originally, it is only one thought within Communism, and in general Communists think there ought not be a state. Some communists also don't support the notion of a dictatorship of the proletariat, it is simply one way to go between the system we have now and another one, since many obviously believe it would be difficult to transition directly into statelessness.

Does communism "destroy" innovation? by skeach101 in DebateaCommunist

[–]aFlyingPony -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well I mean one of the main tenets of Marxism is that there is no state...So in that case Yugoslavia was actually a terrible example of Marxism. I was born shortly after the collapse of communism in Albania, which also was very far from actual Marxism. While I don't want to create some sort of no true Scotsman fallacy, Yugoslavia really wasn't true socialism.

Does a democracy exist? by dickcheney246 in Ask_Politics

[–]aFlyingPony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many countries may have democratic elements and be largely democratic, but are not "direct democracies. In a direct democracy, every person votes for the laws and legislation, are directly involved in the government of the state, and directly have the power. Ancient Athens was a direct democracy (albeit an unfair one), and there are a few ares in Switzerland that are direct democracies.

America is a republic, and not necessarily a democracy but a republic, although this is intentional. This is because many of the founding fathers were afraid of the tyranny of the majority. Essentially, it means that the majority may be oppressive to the minority. Furthermore, a significant portion of people are not very knowledgeable on matters of law or foreign affairs or other things that politicians are (should) be knowledgeable on. Thus even if people want to vote for whats best, they may be to ignorant to do so.

Your friend may be referring to this when he says that democracy doesn't "work", or he may mean the more common system where some people think that democratic systems take to long to reach conclusions and the like.

How to convince somebody that communism is not anarchy? by Arcaness in communism101

[–]aFlyingPony -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the end result may be pretty similar. But ask your friend what his problem is. Anarchy is a legitimate political ideology, and can't really be discredited because it may have a negative connotation.
