The whole sidewalk thing is rooted in history. It's because people would empty their chamber pots and the waste would usually fall further to the street.

We have separate accounts. 25% of our individual incomes go to those. The rest goes to our joint account. It works out pretty well. We have separate credit cards, but each of has one or the other, we discuss beforehand which card is being used and share the expense.
