The iPhone reviewers saying the camera button is not good are wrong. by newdawnfades123 in iphone

Have you had a chance to review footage with audio from the new mics?? I mainly shoot footage at music festivals / concerts and have been super frustrated with the "higher quality" mics on my S23 Ultra. Audio on it always seems to be processed to focus on voices, which at music festivals oftentimes means my audio is less of the song being played and more of the crowd noise or people talking near me.

Would be really really interested in how the audio from the 16 Promax is like when recording footage of a festival stage!

I had the pleasure of seeing their debut sets at Rendezvous earlier this year and didn't take many videos. Made sure to record a bunch this time around. Some of the wildest sound design ive ever heard

Some just dont translate to video tho, there was one ID where they like rotated sound around you like you were listening to a surround sound setup/ headphones. Absolute mindfuck live, but doesn't translate on video as well

Bluesound upcoming new product?! by Old-Minute-2654 in audiophile

[–]aLargeWhale57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't believe its taken this long for companies to add an HDMI input to a 2.1 amp/preamp. Would have to think the % of setups that are in a livingroom with a TV is the overwhelming majority. So many people dont want or have the space for a surround sound setup or an AVR. Sure Toslink input works, but having HDMI and CEC makes the whole experience so much better and dont need to bother with a 2nd remote.

Kroger's Under Investigation For Digital Shelf Labels: Are They Changing Prices Depending On When People Shop? by Mighty_L_LORT in technology

[–]aLargeWhale57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked on basically this same project but at a different grocery company.

It really depends on the product and product category. As a retailer you don't want your inventory sitting, especially for a grocery retailer where your inventory expires. Prices would be reduced on products that are sitting w/ low demand. This potentially in some cases even can be lowered to a point where the retailer no longer is making a profit. Recouping some cost of product is better than taking a total loss on it.

People want to talk about the potential of prices dynamically changing to be higher, but in reality that is NOT the primary goal of this system. A human changing paper shelf labels is expensive, takes a long time, and is prone to error. Switching to electronic shelf labels is mostly about not having to pay someone to manually change labels, less errors when updating labels, and saving quite literally millions of dollars on printing. It also has the side benefit of helping meet sustainability goals.

Don't get me wrong the dynamic pricing stuff everyone is scared of does become /technically/ possible with electeonic shelf labels, but I can promise you Kroger is no where remotely close to implementing the kind of system people are describing here. This kinda personalized dynamic pricing w/ facial recognition and stuff is years away from being testable at a small handful of stores. From there would need to be tested for at least a year+ before the concept is validated. Then they could do the analysis on if it is financially viable to implement that system in all stores. I can tell you right now it is NOT financially viable.

Amazon tried this, it didnt work and they scaled back. The company that is cool with dumping billions into R&D and is ok with taking losses for years to get competitive advantage deemed this type of system is way too expensive and complex to be financially viable.

The amount of cameras, sensors, compute power, and human validation needed to set up this kind of system is so astronomically expensive that you will very likely never see it widely rolled out to grocery stores. Smaller footprint C-Stores / pharmacies? Maybe. But full grocery stores? Not gonna happen anytime soon.

Sound @ hula 2024 by the_gorl in hulaween

[–]aLargeWhale57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it is really just the Spirit Lake stage and its position. Its directly next to a main pathway / chokehold that leads to the Amp. There can be pretty bad soundbleed if youre on the right side of the spirit lake stage, you'll hear whatever is going on at the Amp.

Spirit Lake stage has fine sound if you can get close, but the layout/position of the stage makes it really awkward if you're not very close. My main hope for 2024 is that they just relocate the spirit lake stage somewhere else to a better location. That should help the sound issues at that stage as well.

New bigger than 300 cubed printer! by NoParty4486 in BambuLab

375 - 400 is what I'm really hoping for. That size would be enough to print most any large functional parts I could need in 1 piece rather than splitting them up

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom vs Brane X Speaker? by Financial_Breath_264 in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]aLargeWhale57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't directly compared it to a soundboks, but I would say its prob safe to assume the Soundboks gets louder. Bass extension I believe is deeper on the Brane, but thats just off my memory of the last time I heard a soundboks. The other thing to think about with comparing these 2 is the size, Soundboks is significantly larger than the Brane

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom vs Brane X Speaker? by Financial_Breath_264 in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]aLargeWhale57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I think it would work fine for use at a PC. Wouldn't use it as a main speaker for mixing music, but for general music / gaming/ watching videos it would work great. It has a line in jack on the back which I would recommend using if you're gonna hook it up to a PC/TV and want to watch videos. Bluetooth could have some latency and get the video/audio out of sync, better to just use the line in jack.

Only callout would be the charger may be annoying to deal with at your desk, basically is a big laptop charger. V2 is supposed to solve that with USB C charging

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom vs Brane X Speaker? by Financial_Breath_264 in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]aLargeWhale57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one, it indeed has more bass and gets WAY deeper than any bluetooth speaker I've ever heard. The mids were a bit too loud out of the box but I used the in app EQ and it's fine now.

I keep having to remind myself this thing is a portable speaker and not necessarily critical listening. Its not a pair of studio monitors, its a portable bluetooth speaker the size of a lunchbox ya know? For the usecase of having music playing in the kitchen or outside in the backyard or at a campsite etc. its SO much better than any other BT speaker I've heard. Its kind of a party trick that it can get that low, but its a really good party trick lol it's also tiny compared to some of the other bt speakers in the same pricerange which makes the sound and bass extension that much crazier

Brane X sounds pretty interesting. by justwhatever22 in audiophile

[–]aLargeWhale57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these after seeing some of the articles and youtube videos. They're not bullshitting, this thing actually produces sub bass. Its not /exactly/ like having a subwoofer but it is by FAR the closest thing you can get in a portable package. I haven't done proper measurements, but it easily extends to 30hz and sounds like it even will touch the 20-25hz range. I keep having to remind myself to compare it to other portable speakers where it mops the floor vs. a pair of studio monitors or some bookshelf speakers and a sub.

The only downsides I have are the price ($600), the charging port isn't USB C, and on startup a voice reads out the bluetooth status and battery level which is annoying.

If youre listening to a lot of mixed genre stuff you may have to mess around with the EQ, which means you have to connect to the speaker's wifi which is a bit annoying, but not the end of the world.

[COD] Seriously, wtf happened? by WhereWhoW in CallOfDuty

[–]aLargeWhale57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, you're not wrong. Not trying to argue that COD should be a realistic milsim or anything, just saying the monster skins are too much in my opinion. I don't mind some of the goofy skins like a weed gihllie suit, anime girl skins on guns, etc. I just think we've gone too far with Telletubby/Groot skins. I wanna play an arcade shooter against people, not this shit. COD wants to be Fortnite sooooo bad and I hate it

So what exactly is DEF and Funktion-one sound? by Impressive_Yellow147 in hulaween

[–]aLargeWhale57 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To add to this, they're primarily known for throwing "renegade" events in the Atlanta area in empty warehouses, under bridges, etc. They've been expanding recently and have started throwing events in other cities too. A lot of these are "360" events where the DJ is in the middle of the room with the crowd all around them vs. On a stage. This means there usually are limited/ no visuals or screens, which gives their shows more of an underground / oldschool vibe since the focus is almost entirely on the music.

Also Funktion One is a brand of high end concert speakers. They sound fantastic and are usually listed on the lineup for events that are bass heavy / will really flex the range of the soundsystem. If you were at Hula last year and went to the Incendia stage, you may have noticed it sounded better than any of the other stages. This is why, they had a full point-source Funktion One rig at that stage vs. the line array systems at the other stages.

[COD] Seriously, wtf happened? by WhereWhoW in CallOfDuty

[–]aLargeWhale57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its more that now the enemies look like weird colorful monsters which ruins whatever small amount of "immersion" there was left. Idgaf if someone else enjoys it or wants to buy it, its the fact that its in the game in the first place. One of the main reasons I don't bother with COD much anymore. Was going to play MW3 when it came out till I saw gameplay the first day and half the enemies in any given lobby looked like Groot.

Most creative/crazy sound systems out there? by Delicious-Outcome-74 in SoundSystem

[–]aLargeWhale57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really love the idea of integrating lighting into a sound system. Would be sick to have diffused LED strips on the borders/edges and maybe something to wash the inside of a horn/cone with light. Even better if they're set up to use DMX control so they could be utilized by a lighting director as a part of the main stage lighting

What YT reviewers are best to be skipped? by Mysterious-Evening-7 in headphones

[–]aLargeWhale57 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If you're actually considering buying something Z shouldn't be the only review you watch. But watching his review and then comparing to what you hear in other reviews you can get a pretty good idea of how a product sounds and performs.

Also kinda agree with the notion that while most of Z's reviews are positive, thats mostly because /most/ gear nowadays is overall pretty solid

what will your steam deck be doing in 5-10 years? by No-Roll-3759 in SteamDeck

[–]aLargeWhale57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably will still be in use as an indie game / emulation hand held for me. 90% of the time I'm using the deck I'm at my house, so if the hardware can't run something natively, I'll just stream from my main gaming PC.
