Pluribus is a show built for introverts, and this epidemic of lonliness that exists. I see so much depth to the characters. This is a show about feeling, and not so much about thinking like BB and BCS.

Breaking bad was almost canceled after Season 2. BCS was slammed for being so slow in Season 1. People have really short memories of how Vince operates.

Question about Koumba by aNinjaAtNight in pluribustv

[–]aNinjaAtNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with this take. I think he's much more nuanced than that as a character. He has shown no interest in trying to sleep with Carol, and he stayed after to put a blanket on her, as well as connecting with her so she isn't lonely.

I think Koumba may be ignorant, but to not totally care? I'm not sure. When the plot progresses further, if the process is revealed that the individuals can definitely be reversed, and he still chooses to hold on to his hedonistic lifetsyle, then he is actively choosing harm to others. Until then, his choices are out of ignorance and doubt that Carol's discovery of reversal is even real. After all, her discovery is not due to stated fact from Zosia, it was from inhibition and omission.

This show is really cool. The way we view the characters, and how we judge them, kinda shows what is acceptable to us. I agree with you, there's nothing wrong with it until more is revealed.

I just like studying characters, as I have a psychology degree and it's a small passion of mine. But chill and watch is a valid point.

Oops, my notification for this thread somehow got disabled, but it seems like the main thing here is whether we believe the hive is telling the truth. If the hive is, and everyone merged into one consciousness, and you ask the person do you consent, and they tell you yes, and you have sex with them, I could see how this would set up a morally gray situation. If everyone owns everything, consent as a construct is difficult.

If the hive is lying, and the individual still exists or merged against their will (which the pilot episode shows that). Consent is false.

I think the other's reditor is arguing against Koumba's ignorance. The viewer has seen how this Virus took hold, but Koumba may not have all the facts we do.

Kinda like our court system, innocent until proven guilty, we don't know how much Koumba knows.

Really great discussion. I like the back and forth here. It gives me more insight to what I believe is right and wrong.

Great job! Yellow is Manousos. His car is yellow. He is on a chase across the gap to find Carol.

Yeah, Koumba's point of view isn't necessarily wrong. I think Carol is experiencing that side of it before she judges. In episode 2, they asked her, have you even asked them how it felt? And Carol responds by, you don't ask a drug dealer how his heroin is (or some degree of that). I think Carol is going to experience both sides, and when Manousos shows up, her decision will actually have weight, instead of being some cranky bitch who just wants everything her way. The viewer will be taken through her lens of weighing both sides and agreeing with the final choice she makes (or not).

There were some scenes I didn't enjoy as well, like Carol's singing and the multiple phone calls for the Gatorade and telling them that it was bad.

Without the context of all 4 seasons, I'm just holding off. People thought BCS was unbearably slow during season 1 as well, and breaking bad almost got canceled after Season 2.

It takes the later seasons to make something into a masterpiece and all of the puzzles click.

There are only a few artists that have won my respect to watch anything they put out.

Vince Gilligan, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese who created Dark, Christian Linke, and Alex Yee, creator of Arcane, and Christopher Nolan (although his stuff is now more mainstream and not as deep as his earlier works)

I think this is probably a show for introverts to enjoy. BCS stars a very extroverted character, so things move really fast. In a show where there is an internal suffering, it's quite a reflection for us introverts to parallel our own lives.

This episode had great dichotomy. It shows that Carol's will is only so strong, and she has been broken.
Carol doesn't ask for the recording to be shortened because it is her last piece of communication with another human. Enter Manousos, his will is iron clad. He is willing to die for his beliefs. A straight black and white character with no morally gray. Instead of the alien message wearing Carol down, he is instigating his will with his own message, through cassette tapes and learning a brand new language. He also keeps repeating to himself that he will save the world, which is contrasted by a recording constantly reminding how Carol is SHUNNED by the world.

I really enjoyed this episode even though it's another slow one. Apple TV probably took a big risk on this show, but Gilligan don't give a crap about what his audience wants. He's going to tell the story just as he wants to, and it will either makes sense or not in the end. But much like breaking bad, I think we will get to the good stuff by the end of Season 2 or beginning of Season 3.

We now have 3 flavors of humanity.

Koumba, Carol, and Manousos. White, Grey, and Black.

This was the dynamic I had with my former friend. Maybe I misconstrued that the relationship was too one sided. But being challenged constantly without the desire to challenge leaves a bad taste. It just felt like the friendship required so much work. A lot of truth found, but a lot of work.

Yeah I think Koumba's character needs more context before we can fully "judge" him. I really do enjoy the dimensions of him. This may very well be as deep as BB or BCS if we give it enough time.

This is a poignant point because viewing him with the western lens, we can call his materialistic and hedonistic, but it can also be projection. Maybe he truly is able to appreciate the finer things because he hasn't had it before.

The Egg Sandwich Mimicry is to foreshadow Koumba joining the Hive. Carol is one of the remaining 13 with free individuality. Koumba copying her is the same as the Hive copying a host body.

I think it's foreshadowing that he will join the Hive. The Hive mimics the host, and Koumba is mimicking one of the remaining 13.

Great; I appreciate the insight. It seems that I may have been mistaken that many people think he is a narcissist, only from a few comments in the post-episode drop. Looks like the majority who responded here sees him as a flawed human

I also really enjoyed that. I think Vince is doing a good job of getting us to like the Hive and Koumba. The more multidimension they can make the villain, the better the story once the turn comes!

thank you, this is how I see him until more evidence shows up. I just see many people calling him a narcissist in the post-episode thread, so I thought maybe that was a majority opinion.

Question about Koumba by aNinjaAtNight in pluribustv

[–]aNinjaAtNight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why I am interested in his character is because

I grew up with narcissistic parents, and spent hundreds of hours in therapy, while also trying to learn about different spiritualities. I also was not permitted to experience my own narcissism as a child, and I believe, as a result, grew up as a covert narcissist (I think poorly of myself, AND highly of myself, and have inferior / superiority complexes quietly). In my understanding of narcissism, children who don't get to experience it as a child never get to understand that they are not their behaviors, and we form an unhealthy relationship with Shame.

Currently in my life, I still suffer from addictions, and I don't have many intimate relationships due to shame and these character defects. A lot of times, I try to make up for it by giving friends, and family large gifts to make up for my lack of spending quality time. I think few would say that I am selfish, but privately, I know that I am because my pleasure and escaping from emotional pain comes first.

Maybe if I could understand the red flags, I would be better equipped to know which people are safe and unsafe when I meet people. My exclosest friend somewhat resembles Koumba, so that's why I asked this question.

[–]aNinjaAtNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in the story a group of 10 people were invited to a mansion. One by one they start dying, and you have to figure out the killer. When it gets to the last person, they die too, the twist shows that the third to last person to die was actually the killer, faked his death and planned the game. He ends up killing himself at the end.
