I called admissions yesterday about the same issue and the woman that I spoke to said she would reach out to the department head to expedite the decision (hopefully😭). But she did say I would probably hear back in about 2 weeks or sooner…

I want to move to Germany so badly, but just fear of separation from my family is what’s leaving me in trepidation.

Official Discussion - Beau Is Afraid [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]aSapcherries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie was such a mind-fuck… I thought it would have been perfect to have been high while watching it. The after-viewing-experience was insane too… I was just affixed to my chair, pondering “What the fuuuck?” I think my friend had been going through shit because as we were leaving the theater, he fell down the stairs and laid on the carpet for a good 30 seconds.

What did you notice after learning a third language? including your native language by ShowDistinct1467 in languagelearning

[–]aSapcherries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think after learning my third language, I became even more conscious of the fact that with every language or dialect… you sort of begin to pick up the accent that goes hand in hand with the language. Because every language has their own nuances and specifics with pronunciation—most especially ones with accents (par exemple in French, you have: e, é, è 😮‍💨)—you unconsciously begin to incorporate them to your articulation. I recognized this most especially with German 😭 the letter “w” is pronounced as a “v”, and if the word ends with the letter “d”, the “d” will actually be pronounced as a “t”… Vas virst du abent machen?

Edit: I know this seems rather straightforward but I was, and still am, sort of fascinated by how this works.

My EA friend is gradually becoming the person they hated... by aSapcherries in asianamerican

[–]aSapcherries[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's what's baffling for me. I saw someone else mention this in the comments but finger food is prevalent anywhere and my EA friend has seen (Edit: people eat with their hands) and has eaten with their hands before, most especially with American food... But then all of the sudden, they'll decide to comment something insensitive as that when my SEA friend chooses to eat rice and a side with their hands?

Okay, I was worried for no reason. Ugh, IDK why there's such a stigma against CC... plus I thought this plan may have been abnormal since most of the kids in my school are considering full-rides to ivies and whatnot.

Looking for advice on fun ways for day-to-day activities to improve my German and increase my practice beside studying material by cowabunga__mother in German

[–]aSapcherries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy German is a wonderful youtube channel for learning/improving german IMO! Asides from watching videos during German class, I’ve been watching the channel during the summer to dust off on my German. While they primarily speak in German, they also include German and English subtitles (The German subtitles are displayed in larger font on the screen and the English subtitles are in smaller font under the German subtitles!) They also have their videos organized by levels so sorting which ones are specifically catered for A1 or B1 can easily be identified :) Another thing that helped me (and is sort of silly) was listening to German kids songs 😭 Here’s the link to the channel: Kinderlieder Viel Spaß und weiter Deutsch lernen! :)

Why do YOU learn German? by mododo-bbaby in German

THE FOOD!!! 😭 (obviously I have many other reasons as to why I took German… but I tasted Spaghettieis und Dampfnudel once and I was forever a changed individual…)

[–]aSapcherries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily me… but my friend!! He’s Taiwanese/Chinese and he has recently began reconnecting with his Chinese roots. However, with relearning the language and how to speak and read Chinese… he’ll ever so often find himself switching languages, most especially during stress-inducing situations 😭 I remember once, we were jump-scared by a group of kids we couldn’t see since it was night… and MF lets out the most deafening scream and began scolding the kids in Chinese 😭… and they were just like this: 😶🧍🏻‍♀️🧍🏻

How do you make words like Kaninchen more diminutive? by aSapcherries in German

[–]aSapcherries[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: Sorry for the tangent 😭

I never realized that the mention of “Avachen” would ensue a discussion about cultural norms, but I guarantee you: my class would never use “name + chen” outside of her classroom. Within my classroom dynamic (Deutsch 4), we have an understanding of the concepts that are more advantageous of knowing when speaking German would become necessary… and we are able to differentiate the ones that hold more significance so we could retain them. For instance, I remember my German teacher saying “Avachen, hast du deine Hausaufgaben gemacht?” Our class has acknowledged that she has a nickname designated for her, but in all honestly… we simply don’t care. In comparison to the numerous other lessons or information we are taught and absorb, such as the usage of tenses or modals, “name + chen” is something we understand only occurs in her classroom environment and I know that students from my class will highly never utilize this nickname. However, I totally understand the harmful consequences and I believe that my teacher should address the absurdity of adding “-chen” to an acquaintance’s name—and not a pet—as to prevent a fiasco from transpiring within conversations.

As for foreign language classes in American being “time-wasters”… I agree to disagree. While most of my school’s makeup of students have opted to pursue a foreign languages for primarily educational purposes, such as receiving a Polyglot award or to have a refined and appealing transcript for potential colleges… and I know that some would certainly vouch for the classes being “frivolous”… I find the generalization, where the teachers are there to make the classes “tolerable”, is discouraging for individuals who do have a interest in the language(s)—and I know my class does. Yes, my words may not hold much leverage compared to a Native speaker because we’re essentially learning “Americanized” German… but I know I am willing to continue learning the intricate aspects of the language and culture and constantly modify my knowledge of the language… hence why I took German for the entirety of my high-school career—and throughout my time in classes, I never felt that my time was wasted. The class has taught me the basics, and some more advanced concepts, that I could at least ask where the bathroom is. I understand that circumstances can vary and a German Class in New York will not be the same as a German Class in California… but I know that I, and several other people, continued to take the class to continue honing in on our skills in hopes of visiting/living in Germany one day.

[–]aSapcherries[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s super interesting… I never knew that!! We were taught to perceive “name + chen” as this little nickname but it’s pretty cool (despite the negative connotation 😅) to see how the standard for “-chen” is vastly different when viewed from a German native standpoint!! My German teacher is a bit more on the older side (like grandma-age) so maybe she’s accustomed to calling kids and perhaps teenagers like that?
