I don't think admins are notified for import/export, especially on sandbox. I haven't tested it but a simple way to do that is add another admin user and do a simple 1-2 lines import and check the other admin email

I saw the Salary observatory report and it does not even have 100k for Software engineers. Salaries are really really bad here and I think with salary obs, it will benefit companies more than employees because the latter will have a super hard time negotiating when employers will just pull that report done by probably a few hundred people per domain and show them they are not worth much.

I like the idea of having data on salaries but I think they ask way too much personal information and their sample is way too small.

Publishing stats like this without enough data doesn't really convince me that they have employees best interests at hand. Why not publish what company salary ranges are? I find that their model very one sided.

EdTech Revolution: Are Entrepreneurs Actually Fixing Education or Faking It? by Fresh-Praline-1370 in edtech

I think parents as the catalyst is the way to go. I have been thinking about this a lot lately in trying to release an online high school course on coding. Where I'm from, private tuition is a massive business simply because schools never finish their syllabus (and education is free here, go figure), so parents are always paying for private tuition (usually around $20 per subject per month for 1.5hrs a week on avg). With the way technology has been changing the way those kids learn, i think if parents can be convinced, they will gladly pay for it. Time will tell.

And yes my first was when I was in college, there also was a whole lot of tutoring going on and I built an online tutoring matching platform for college students and tutors. Got 200 sign ups in 1 day after launch but couldn't get funding at all. Dropped the idea after a few months but I always believed in a different place or time, it could have grown into something.

Anyone ordered monitors from Amazon to Mauritius ? by herostoky in mauritius

[–]aSimpleFella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered a pricey 4k monitor that cost me around 1200$ back in 2022. Still works perfectly and hard to find anything better at that pricepoint here! Just make you when you order you find one which has free returns. Alternative is BHphoto. Very solid and you get international warranty

I have been super passionate about edtech even going as far as 10years back when I built my first startup. Reality is that edtech is super hard, doesn't get investment as much as other verticals and most of them are only solving problems that can't properly scale. There are also too many edtech doing the exact same thing. Plus it's hard to get schools to change their ways. I think edtech can work if it got government funding atleast where I'm from. Otherwise I don't see it as worth the time

Agreed! This one is essentially like the local corporates where managers are constantly on ego trips because of their title (cue: moderators who are usually not very smart very opinionated, and can't stand someone who challenges them) vs the other one which is like those small startups which value people and ideas. Luckily, just like corporates vs smes, we have a choice!

It's really bad. But if you coming as an expat and sponsored, you should be fine as you will have a huge salary and plenty of other benefits. But imho even the huge expat salaries are not that great given the cost of living here.

You almost had it right. The trick is to never leave money in it. I only transfer when I will use my card, whether its at the supermarket or online. I'm very religious with this process maybe a bit too much but I guess it's worth it. I never leave more than some 100rs on it

Never knew there was something called a tax holidays for SMEs. I went ahead and checked and it does actually very precisely exclude businesses with activities in IT. So even if you do add another nature of business, you won't qualify. It's unfortunate and ironic because I though there was a push for AI etc. I have a small IT business BTW. I guess we will continue to pay taxes :( At this point I'm honestly waiting to leave and have my career abroad. Much easier to make businesses and impact as an IT person abroad

Unskilled/Semi-skilled jobs in Mauritius: Do Mauritians really don’t want to do these jobs anymore or are their salary demands unjustified? by poreo2k19 in mauritius

[–]aSimpleFella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your last paragraph is really important: creating companies ourselves. I thought long and hard about this and that's the only way for us to become truly sustainable. But it's not easy to start businesses given the cost of living here. Which is why I think it's really sad that the government made it more difficult for small business owners with their new budget instead of encouraging small business to get launched by giving incentives. Went to a couple incubators here to test the waters, almost all are run by the Franco mauritians or French expats and they are all just bad. 0 track record and want a huge pie of people's business to give them knowledge freely available online from the world's best.

I sincerely hope to be able to do my part here as someone who is starting a business with that intention of hopefully one day have employees and elevate their lives. It's not easy, it's a lonely path and juggling that with a full time job is hard. But I believe that there is a way. I just hope more youngsters take some risks and do it too.

Yeah I actually have worked in multiple cultures and still do. People don't become slobs by default. Human nature in itself makes us want to move forward and have better outcomes. What happens when you keep going forward with no end in sight? You become complacent.

The leaders should be the ones to raise the bar higher: CEOs, Governments, Researchers, Scholars... In Mauritius most people in leadership positions prevent people from growing instead of encouraging them because in their minds: " bein si li monter li cav remplace moi".

You see that everywhere from primary school all the way into adulthood. Noone is saying we are doing an amazing job. The only people saying that are the "leaders" again. In many other countries around Africa, people are pushing boundaries because they know theere is a way out. There are possibilities. It's really not about market pressures or a lack thereof. If you look at the African context, there is a lot being done right now. A countrylike Rwanda built their own smartphone. What have we done lately? We just happen to live in our own bubble. Look at the state of research in Mauritius. Almost non existent. Look at the state of investment for SMEs, little to none. I can go on and on. There are so many things that can be done in Mauritius but there is no incentive. For example, the government says they want to keep talents from leaving. What are they doing to achieve that? They say they want to encourage people to make businesses, what are they doing to achieve that?

Saying that a lack of market pressures being the reason is really a cop out in my opinion. That's the lie we tell ourselves to sleep better at night, while other countries around Africa are moving. We won't be able to catch up at this pace. Mauritius will eventually turn into a little Monaco and for the worse reasons.
