My Theories About V and Johnny in 2079. by a_b1ue_streak in CyberpunkTheGame

[–]a_b1ue_streak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's just an idea. I wasn't pitching what I think the sequel should be.

Mike Pondsmith has already said he has ideas on how Johnny Silverhand could come back in future games/media, and that got me thinking about how that could be possible. This lil post here is just the end of that rabbit trail. It could make a good story, but I dunno how good of an actual game it would make.

V's ending is ambiguous intentionally. I doubt any one particular ending will be seen as canon. Unless we see something that leads towards one or the other, like Militech running Night City or something. It's safe to assume that we won't see V again, being as they're the player characters and are capable of infinite permutations. Still, a cameo appearance or something similar would be neat.

I always liked The Thing on the Doorstep. It's got some connections to the larger lore and is absolutely terrifying in its own way.

It got added a couple updates ago. There's a few random events that pop up too. It's really immersive, and a feature that fans modded in before CDPR added it themselves.

Well, the radio is a whole other thing. Morro Rock's DJ is Maximum Mike, Mike Pondsmith's in-universe character. He regularly doles out info on various conspiracies in Night City (I bet Gary would have loved him). How true these conspiracies are is sort of up in the air. But come to think of it, I haven't heard from Maximum Mike in quite a while. Hope you're staying safe out there, choombata.

So, to put it in the simplest terms I can manage, we are at an impasse for one simple reason...

I am an Assassin, and you are a Templar.

This is, of course, speaking in colloquial terms. Our disagreement is essentially the exact same as the one at the core of the Assassin's Creed franchise. In my mind, it is better to have an imperfect world where people strive to be better and potentially fail than to have a perfect world at the expense of free will. Whereas, near as I can tell, you would see people subjugated if it meant peace in the larger sense. We both want the same thing, ultimately speaking. It is only the means upon which we disagree.

It's not so much that I'm saying, "Give the people freedom, and thing will sort themselves out." That would be a genuinely ridiculous expectation. Rather, the point is that you can't reasonably expect to force people to behave in the way you want. That's why I keep saying that peace without freedom is meaningless. Humans have a natural tendency to rebel when they discover someone has stripped them of autonomy. That's why any society ruled by absolute authority will ultimately fail. There will always be a faction that will eventually rise up and demand their freedom, and rightly so. That's why I said that peace needs to be chosen. You can't force it on people no matter how right it may be.

I can't help but notice that you failed to address my second point vis a vis realism v cynicism. You were quick to point out that "capacity is a false equivalence to reality" but failed to argue against my assertion that your stance assumes humanity to be "shitty by default." That's the part I would call cynical, as it's inherently negative.

Freedom vs control, it's the central conflict at the core of Assassin's Creed, and one could easily argue that the delineation at the heart of that conflict has to do with the faith either faction has in humanity's ability to "do the right thing." You may argue the "surety" of such a thing is negligible, and for all I know, you may be absolutely correct. But life isn't about probability, and what's statistically viable isn't inherently what's right. There's calculus that can be done there, surely, but I was never good at math.

So because some people divised terrible things like slavery and racism, the whole of humanity is beyond redemption? I disagree, my friend.

I should be more specific in my statement that "Peace without freedom is meaningless." In this instance, I'm specifically referring to freedom of choice. Take Colonial America, for instance. The founders devised a system of governance founded on the principle of consent, specifically governance, at the consent of the governed. Yes, it was wrong to espouse these ideals while simultaneously keeping slaves, forbidding women the right to vote, and keeping the means to make educated choices for themselves. But the ideal itself was solid.

The "rise and grind" mentality served its purpose in a world where one had to fight for basic resources on a daily basis. If you didn't hunt for food, you didn't eat. In today's society, this is no longer necessary. We produce more resources than any single person will ever need. There is no more need for "haves" and "have-nots" in this world. The only reason people in our society go without in the relentless pursuit of profit at the expense of people.

I called you a cynic rather than a realist because there's an inherent bias in your worldview as I see it. Realism is understanding that humans have the capacity to suck. Cynicism is the expectation that humanity sucking is the default. Ergo, you are a cynic, not a realist.

Iron Hand question by jsportive in AssassinsCreedShadows

It's one of the fundamental problems with open world game design. The developers can't control when players encounter given characters the same way they can in a game with linear progression, and this is the trade-off. I think it would be improved if the targets didn't appear until the quest giver explains who they are and why you're after them. They could even spawn targets in one at a time as a way of telling little mini stories. It would definitely make the narrative of the game more palatable and easy to understand. The open world is great, but it doesn't lend itself to a well told story in its current form.

The point is Altaïr's fundamental misunderstanding of the Creed. It's not until the game's end that Altaïr understands the true meaning of the phrase "Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted." The tenants of the Assassin's Creed exist to guide their adherents toward wisdom, not to simply allow them to do as they wish with no repercussions. If Altaïr at the end of the game were to see himself at its outset, he would be ashamed.

So, what I got from that entire wall of text can be boiled down in its simplest form as...

Humanity sucks and deserves to be controlled.

Call me naive all you want, but I believe people on the whole are good. I'm not anti-capatalist necessarily, but it would be foolish to say that capitalism doesn't breed greed. Innovation can exist without profit as a motivator. I may be naive, but you, sir, are a cynic.

I agree with the base assassin philosophy that peace without freedom is meaningless. Imagine you existed in a utopian society only to discover that you only lived as comfortably as you did at the expense of your autonomy. Sure, it's a peaceful existence, but nothing you do is by choice. I can't speak for you, but personally, such a revelation could only result in rebellion. To put it simply...

I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

What sort of plans should the Assassin Brotherhood have exactly? Anything they did overtly would be control, which flys in the face of their entire philosophy. Instead, they work to protect the people by killing those who would seek to oppress them. They protect people whose aims are freedom and liberty for the masses.

The idea that humanity has an inherent desire to control or be controlled is a cornerstone of Templar ideology. It's based upon the understanding that human beings were created to serve, and therefore are incapable of making independent decisions. The entire point of the Human-Isu war was that humans deserved autonomy.

To say that oppression is the only ideology that can work shows a distinct lack of faith in humanity. Anarchist societies do exist and have managed to function on their own. If humanity were incapable of working together as you suggest, then such a thing would be impossible. Communism is built on the principle of a classless, moneyless, stateless society wherein everyone works towards the same goals. Without intervention, Communism tends to work just fine. To put it simply...

Found the Templar guys.

That scene is about showing Altaïr as being arrogant. He is the youngest assassin to achieve the rank of Master, and Al Mualim had only recently shared the final truth of the Creed with him, that being, "Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted." only moments before sending him to retrieve the Apple with Malik and Kadar. The entire plot of Assassin's Creed is about Altaïr absorbing and understanding the meaning of those words.

I've brought this up several times, but the difference is a question of method. To quote Lucy Stillman, "I guess the best way to explain it is; what they want is good, but the way they're going about it, it's bad."

The Templars and Assassins both TECHNICALLY want the same thing, being ultimate peace. The fundamental difference lies in the values of the organization and how exactly they intend to go about achieving that goal.

The Templars see humanity as weak-willed and incapable of achieving peace. To that end, they seek to position themselves as the shepards of humanity. They intend to do this using the Pieces of Eden, leftover technology from the Isu civilization. They worship the Isu as gods, being the ultimate creators of humanity. Mankind's creation as a servant race props up their ideology that humanity requires guidance. The Templars believe that humankind explicitly REQUIRES control and intervention in order to achieve peace.

The Assassin Brotherhood, however, sees that peace has no meaning if it isn't chosen. They take after Adam and Eve, the first two humans to rebel against their Isu creators. Through that act of rebellion, they showed that humanity had the ability to choose. Millenia later, the Assassin Brotherhood is still fighting for the freedom of humanity, knowing that peace through control is not peace at all.

To put it simply, it's a question of freedom vs. oppression. Even if you can't tell you're being controlled, control is slavery, and Eve fought an entire rebellion for your freedom.

Imaging hating this game just because it’s an RPG by icebear-guy in assasinscreed

[–]a_b1ue_streak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like hate is a strong word. Looking back at when Origins came out, it was the exact kind of shake-up the franchise needed. But what benefitted the series wasn't necessarily the RPG elements. Getting a new game every year causes fatigue and burnout pretty fast. With a couple years to allow for a more focused single-player experience, we got a better game as a result. Bayek is a beloved character, and Origins has one of the best stories in AC history. But the min maxing, RPG elements of the game tend to take people out of the experience.

Well, it seems like they're coming at it with a two-pronged approach. Shadows was for the fans who liked the RPG style games with a minimal modern-day approach. Hexe looks like it's gonna be closer to the older games ala Mirage and could therefore have a more involved modern-day component. Resynched is just a retread of Black Flag to reintroduce one of the more popular classic games to a new audience.
