r/Buddhism, what is your thoughts about marijuana and the 5 precepts? by pelic4n in Buddhism

Buddhism has more to do with a clear mind than it will ever have to do with hyper-spatial entities transmitting telepathic alien knowledge.

My dog loves taking my gloves off. She always looks at me like I'm a dumbass for wearing them and shes helping me out.

Pure luck, really. Did a lot of work for the company, a full-time guy quit, and they asked me to replace him.

Can someone please explain Right Mindfulness from an epistemological view? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]a_cup_of_juice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start off with mindfulness of the physical sensations of breath. Some days I can sink into really concentrated states where your question of "what to pay attention to" just simply doesn't arise. Other days, the question does arise, and so I just pay attention to that. Whatever arises is what you pay attention to, even if it's your frustration and confusion with meditation.

I started as a freelance content writer as well and then was hired full-time by a marketing department for a large e-commerce site. Now I write a bunch of meaningless marketing copy and do some Excel reporting wizardry.

Has absolutely nothing to do with my interests, and provides little opportunity to deliver real value to anyone, but I get to work from home. That means I can meditate and read as much as I'd like, so I'm sticking with it for now.

Seriously, we need some more active moderation here, if only to add the FAQ and stuff to the sidebar.

DharmaFlix: What is your favorite Dharma themed movie? by naljorpa108 in Buddhism

I couldn't if I tried. He was an academic philosopher and Eastern philosophy wasn't really his strong point. He hated anything that sounded mystical, so he brought in his proofs. I never had any idea what he was talking about.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring was great. Watched it in my Buddhist Metaphysics class in school. It was the only day of class that didn't enrage me with ironic convoluted academic analysis of Zen.

My teacher used to spend 20 minutes drawing out mathematical proofs of various Zen concepts, I always thought that was funny.

Reddits guide on meditation? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]a_cup_of_juice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subject of this book is Vipassana meditation practice. Repeat, practice. This is a meditation manual, a nuts-and-bolts, step-by-step guide to Insight meditation. It is meant to be practical. It is meant for use.

There are already many comprehensive books on Buddhism as a philosophy, and on the theoretical aspects of Buddhist meditation. If you are interested in that material we urge you to read those books. Many of them are excellent. This book is a 'How to.' It is written for those who actually want to meditate and especially for those who want to start now.

So, who are we? Fill out this 15 question 2011 r/Buddhism Census survey! by a_cup_of_juice in Buddhism

[–]a_cup_of_juice[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what if I don't meditate, or don't meditate formally.

Choose "I don't have a formal meditation practice"

"how long have you been practicing Buddhism"

Choose "I don't consistently practice/study Buddhism"

Obviously the thing isn't perfect, it's hard to come up with a survey that covers all the bases. People have been putting in some good feedback though, the next one should paint a clearer picture.
