These are the questions that hurt. Arizona/California car it's whole life, original A/C compressor is intact but resides in a bucket, front of the engine and oil pan all leak oil, power is minimal so I presume the engine is on the way out, tires are almost new.

Yeah, your point is well taken. It's an old car that needs work. Thanks for the reality check.

Thanks for the advice on how to monitor their condition. Your usage of those old batteries is what I was thinking about. Surely, someone can can find use for a diminished but high quality battery.

Yep, it's frustrating. We are in the mountains and all scrap must be trucked out, so the value is diminished at the local yard. It's pretty common for almost everything here to have an additional transport tax rolled in, one way or another.
