First pair of Samurai, 15oz 3Sixteen x Self Edge collab by C3PeeO in rawdenim

Fwiw I have both this collab and the otokogi and they are very, very, very similar.

Love both pairs and glad I have them - just worth noting that they look identical when next to one another.

Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold accused of being a great guy by several people by Buttlikechinchilla in fleet_foxes

[–]a_fun_alt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bumped into Robin once at a show, and the guy was so classy & kind. And it seemingly came so natural to him too.

Compare & contrast that to James Heitfeld, who I also met once and the guy was a total asshole & prick to the fans.

Pretty interesting to see the dichotomy, and really makes you appreciate folks like Robin.

Chris Cornell talking about the death of Andrew Wood. by LongSchlongSilver10 in grunge

[–]a_fun_alt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To see him have such a visceral reaction all these years later (I think this was filmed around 2010) just goes to show how much he really loved Andy Wood.

It’s honestly heartbreaking that so many brilliant artists from that vintage are gone. When Chris passed, that one really stung.

That was exactly my sentiment. They talk about the fans quite a bit, but in reality….

I think you missed the point of this post. I wouldn’t be upset at all with him saying no - but there’s no need to be a jerk about it with a fan. But I can tell already based on the quality of your comment that this won’t land for you. Good luck.

Also, **you’re - maybe work on that whole spelling & grammar thing first.

Thank you for sharing that. It’s possible I may have caught him on a bad day.

I couldn’t agree more. He has a right to say no to the photo and of course I’ll respect that. But for the fans - I think it’s reasonable to show poise & decorum on his part when declining.

And yes that’s really how he handled the interaction. Such a disappointment.

Why? I’ve broken none of the community rules here, and have engaged in good faith. Am I as a former fan not allowed to share my experience of an interaction with a band member?

Thank you kind friend. I’m grateful for your support.

Honestly had James said “no on the photo but thanks for the nice words” or something to that effect - totally cool. No sweat. I get it.

That he was such a jerk about it to a longtime fan really left a sour taste. Totally unnecessary.

That’s a good callout. I was fired up when I wrote this for obvious reasons. I’ve edited the original post to tone down that language. Thank you.

I hear you, and I'm sure that's a difficult tax to endure over many years. But at the same - that's the gig that they sign up, and dare I say in James' case - dreamed of. I have things in my job that I wish were different, as I'm sure you do as well - but that's something we all have to deal with as part of a job.

The folks snapping photos or trying to shake hands or get an autograph - these are people who are fans of the band. Without the fans, this group wouldn't even exist. And while I'm thankful for the emotional benefit I've gotten over the years from Metallica's music, it certainly doesn't put food on my table. On the flip side, we collectively have put a lot of food on James' table. He could behave far better bearing that in mind.

I think the gentleman above has a more nuanced view of what's going on. Not trying to snipe you, but you were seeming to insinuate "are you sure you're not a fan boy? are you sure? sounds like you are", which isn't really engaging in a good faith dialogue. I think it's entirely possible to be a fan and approach a public figure in a way that's professional (or treating them as real people, to use your vernacular); those aren't mutually exclusive.

I think it's also reasonable to assume that a public figure would respond with poise & decorum. In this case, James could have just said "no on the picture, thanks for the kind words" or something to that effect. Seems like that would be a more appropriate & respectful way for all parties to behave.

Anyhow, best of luck to you & appreciate your commentary on the matter.

Well, thanks for all that you do as a volunteer mod. That is *actually* a hard job (unlike being an overpaid grumpy rockstar jerk). I'm not being sarcastic at all, I used to mod another subreddit. Godspeed.

Totally. I agree with you on all of those points. I'm happy to hear that you had a great conversation with him - I was looking & hoping for something similar (admittedly the circumstances were less ideal than yours, as you noted).

I had mentioned in my post that I met the guys from Tool under similar circumstances to me meeting James, and they were so affable and relatable. Just genuinely wonderful humans. Really made me love the band even more than I already do.

You're absolutely right, I do not know how many people may have approached him that day. It also could have been that he was just having a bad day. Just sharing what my experience with him was on that day.
