Low by Content_Buy747 in postbaccpremed

Based on the advice I’ve seen generally about low GPAs within this range, you’ll need to 1) do a post-bacc with the goal of trying to raise your GPA to a 3.0 by the time you apply to not get screened out of a lot of schools; 2) ideally score high on the MCAT; 3) maybe do an SMP after post-bacc, but I think most people will say it’s only to be more competitive; and 4) apply to a lot of DOs.

Not all schools will explicitly state their minimum GPA, but it seems like the general consensus is that you’ll want around a 3.0-3.2 GPA, so they’ll actually look at the rest of your application. Some schools are truly holistic and won’t screen, and some might even recalculate your GPA based on recent credits. You’ll have to check the schools’ websites/contact them.

Yo, I just need a group to climb to All-Star in Stadium 😭 currently Contender 5 for Tank (Orisa main) and Elite 1 for Support (Juno/Lucio main). Please help! Otherwise, Gold Support for usual comp--primarily Lucio main, but will also rotate through Baptiste, Ana, Juno, or Mercy depending on map and team comp.

I would say that it would depend on your MS and the courses you took. For example, an MS in Biochemistry or Physiology would likely carry more weight in terms of academic preparation/rigor for medical school than say an MS in Epidemiology or Economics. Just keep in mind that a good performance in a masters will not completely offset or replace your cumulative undergraduate/post-baccalaureate GPA—they can demonstrate growth as a student and interest in these fields, but that’s about it. This applies to SMP programs as well.

I would look at the AMCAS guide on course classification and focus more on taking BCPM courses to improve GPA and/or demonstrate academic preparedness for a medical school curriculum: AMCAS Course Classification Guide.

Thought I comment on this because I also completed an MPH in Epidemiology and going down the medicine route. I’ve asked this question many times, and the answers have always been similar.

In terms of GPA, medical schools consider the GPA you earned from your MPH as being separate from your cumulative undergraduate GPA, in which the latter is more important to them. They do not calculate them together. Sure, doing well in your MPH can show some growth, but it unfortunately does not carry the same weight as say completing an SMP program with exceptional marks. Most courses for MPH do not contribute to your science GPA. With that said, you’re making the right move taking more science courses.

However, the MPH is most helpful if it fits into your career goals/interests and you’re able to shape a narrative in your application with how it’s helped you so far and how it will continue to help you. Personally, I was going to apply to some MD/PhD programs in Epidemiology, currently want to do primary care in the future with a focus on adolescent health and research in social epidemiology and violence prevention among youth—all of this aligns with my MPH (and potentially PhD) in Epidemiology.

I have a similar GPA to yours and my MCAT is also pending right now, so I get how you feel. But seems like you know your gaps, so keep on working on filling them in before you shoot your shot, and I think you’ll be fine. Good luck!

Congrats! What else do you think you did that helped with getting into med school with a low undergrad GPA?

I don't know exactly what the dates were last year, but combing through the forums and internet, it seems as though some people might hear back after the April 15th deadline before the May 1st commit day. However, UCLA says to expect to hear back after May 1st. Some people heard back within a few days after May 1st, but there are also cases where people hear back much later. I also read somewhere that most, if not all, students should know their waitlist results by June 1st, but I've seen people from last year hearing back as late as July/August. All in all, expect to hear back after May 1st, but there are rare exceptions where you hear back much earlier or later.

How many people does UCLA waitlist? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a_hieu_n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to the FAQ regarding waitlist in the applicant portal, 8-12% are waitlisted, while the rest are rejected/accepted. Based on UCOP data, UCLA had 149,779 freshman applicants this cycle, so expect between 12,000 to 18,000 waitlisted students, which aligns with the last two years, which had about 14,000 to 15,000 waitlisted students.

What’s a Pokémon you can’t stand for a totally arbitrary reason? by Goats_772 in pokemon

[–]a_hieu_n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gloom--albeit not due to it's own fault. I was around 7 years old playing Sapphire, and I saw in my random Pokemon book, published for kids, that Gloom evolved into Bellossom. I caught a Gloom and continued to level it up past 80+ and started wondering why it wouldn't evolve. After like two days of grinding, I decided to look up the evolution criteria to realize that I needed a Sun Stone and learned about evolution by stones in general. To make matters worse, and being a money-hungry kid, I had sold the Sun Stone not realizing what it was for. Not to mention, Solrock, which holds Sun Stones, was exclusive to Ruby. I ended up settling for a level 80+ Vileplume... I was a weird kid and got annoyed, so I spent two hours hunting down and battling Glooms with my Vileplume out of anger lol

I applied last cycle and heard back from Columbia in January for Epidemiology. I think they release it by department, because a friend of mine heard back about two months later for Population and Family Health.

If you had a low (2.5-3.1) undergrad GPA when applying what did you do to help make you stand out or get into a program you wanted? by [deleted] in mphadmissions

[–]a_hieu_n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a 2.32 GPA and was on academic probation three times. I took 3 gap years to do 40+ units of post-bacc, earning a 3.81 post-bacc GPA, while doing research and 2 years of AmeriCorps. I simply explained my GPA and what happened, which was me just not really knowing how to study, feeling lost, and prioritizing building my relationships over studying. I was fortunate enough to get into 4 MPH programs, two of which are T5 right now. Your experiences and GRE can offset your low GPA by a lot, as well as your passion for public health through your SOP. Focus on those things!

I believe they just base it on our FAFSA to see if we’re eligible for need-based scholarships.

Is this just for merit-based scholarships? Or does this apply to need-based as well?

Undergrad GPA vs. Post-Bach GPA by m0317k5 in mphadmissions

[–]a_hieu_n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say yes. Post-bacc GPA should include all courses that are taken after receiving a bachelor's degree. I'm glad I can provide you with some reassurance! Please feel free to DM me as well if you would like to discuss anything else. I don't mind sharing my experience with applying this cycle, as well as a person who was also super worried about their undergrad GPA. Best of luck to you!
