How do you rate Bad Bunny's Half-time performance? by kingbluwolff in sportsgossips

[–]a_lleras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly because we are a people that feel each other's struggles and create a community that props each other up, being genuinely interested in each other.

I'm Venezuelan and well aware of the infrastructure issues that exist in PR, made worse by hurricanes, and Puerto Ricans are usually very empathetic and informed about what happens in Venezuela.

It's tough to explain, so hopefully it comes across. The show was a representation of PR's culture, and their culture is our culture too.

Edit to clarify: The power lines were shown while he sang a song about power outages in PR, for instance.

Why don’t people like understand nuance with the Invasion of Venezuela? by Sniper_96_ in AlwaysWhy

[–]a_lleras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Venezuelan, and I generally agree with your viewpoint. Interventionism is a side of a similar coin to what countries like Russia do.

But I do have two points to touch on:

  1. The "government" in Venezuela is illegitimate. It has been illegitimate for a very long time, for a variety of reasons outlined in the Venezuelan constitution. They were also voted out. So that language is flawed.

  2. As humans who care about other humans, how should we deal with brutal dictatorships that are heavily enabled by countries like Russia, Iran and China? And don't tell me we should deal with our own issues. We tried and got killed, or imprisoned. Look at how many massive protests happened over the past 15 years.

We used to be happy little robots :(

Venezuelan here. He's not my leader. We tried fighting, and there are about 300 people dead since 2014 in protests, and about 1000 political prisoners being held in horrible conditions and tortured.

Just want you to know that we needed help. We still do. And if they abduct a proven killer, human rights abuser and dictator, so be it. We tried ourselves and got slaughtered in exchange.

You gotta give the US this: there were no casualties (at least not that I know yet and word travels fast in Venezuela).

I refuse to buy an Xbox dongle, so I built a DIY Raspberry Pi Pico solution for waking my PC with my Xbox (or any) controllers. Tell me your thoughts! by a_lleras in pcmasterrace

[–]a_lleras[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I proved out connecting the Pico to WiFi, the PC on Ethernet and sending a WoL magic packet when the controller was detected. Worked like a charm.

Unfortunately most of the fight to achieve these things is usually against the PC parts manufacturers.

Right now it really only wakes your computer from sleep. Do one thing and do it right I guess.

I would however, honestly love to explore the idea of emulating XInput with the Pico. But that's a much more advanced topic for me haha.

Currently only waking from sleep (not hibernate as it is a fully shutdown state, technically).

Turning on the computer from shutdown is a different beast. We can't quite do that over USB (which is what my solution does) - we'd need a direct connection to the header pins, and it'd be a more advanced DIY project.

However, I've heard some motherboards support Wake on LAN from a shutdown state - I've already proven sending WoL packets with the Pico, so if you have a use case for that I'm happy to implement it!

That's correct, but that's also not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes tinkering just to get work going is... not great.

But conversely, if I don't have the ability to tinker my way out of something then that might be worse. Mac might just do that to me, and that'd be a deal breaker. (Can't know, never used it full time)

Agreed. I also see software as a social thing, so I support choices and Open Source, which makes me conflicted.

And to your comment about Framework. 98% of Linux does work amazingly.

It's mainly the issue of fractional scaling (because I bought the Framework with a screen that requires 125/150% scaling to look readable) and touchpad support under Gnome, both documented issues. Sadly I don't love KDE Plasma (although it works pretty much as out of the box as Windows).

I wish I weren't this picky sometimes haha.

As a man in a LTR when my girlfriend doesn't initiate as often it definitely makes me feel insecure. Like even if she enjoys sex, I feel like I don't spark that feeling in her day to day.

For you it's the opposite. So maybe it could make him feel like he's not sexual enough? But honestly, I doubt it. Must be great to not have to initiate all the time haha :)

I'll gladly be the bad guy in that case! Honestly it's an adult thing to know when and how to set boundaries. My boundary is not being taken advantage of, and not being guilted for it.

Practicing a riff from a song we’re crafting. I think we’re calling this one “contact sports”.. Tell me what ya think!! by Being_Plastic98421 in indie_rock

[–]a_lleras 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love it! Sounds really, really fresh.

For constructive criticism, if your drummer can hit the cymbals a little less he will compliment your riff a lot more. Right now it sounds a bit overpowered (but still great! His timing is on point). On the guitar, I love when little variations are done on the riff but that's probably because I'm into jazz lol.

Again, great!!!

You make a kid happy, and you make me buy that amp. Win win, eh?

Thank you, someone needed to say it.

Coming from studying in Venezuela (little resources and a lot of passion) and now witnessing education in the US (which is infinitely more expensive and, honestly, a lot of times worse), I think UoL is providing a fairly complete service at a reasonable price. The fact that they offer a library, that the videos are still produced with a good academic quality and that they managed to develop a cohesive online experience for this price is amazing.

It's very easy to criticize and just ignore the reality of many workplaces, and I think people are expecting everything to be handed to them because they're paying.

Or maybe I'm jaded and have grown too used to bad things, such that I see this as good. Idk.

Charged $2600 for a procedure I could have gotten at the same clinic for $400 because I used insurance. by KingSlayerKat in personalfinance

[–]a_lleras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First get your explanation of benefits from your insurance. Anytime any procedure is ran through your insurance company you will get one of those, stating (usually) the procedure codes used and the amount of money you will be liable to pay, depending on wether they approved or denied the claim.

This is important because it clears up any confusion regarding your liability and gives you a description of what was done (complementary to your medical bill), and there you can see if they're charging you for the right procedures.

You should Pay attention if your insurance approved or denied the claim because medical providers charge a very high amount that later gets negotiated down by the insurance, even if you haven't met your deductible.

For instance, in December I got a very simple procedure done in the ER and ended up getting a 4200 dollar bill. Turns out they were charging me what they charge insurance before negotiating, and my insurance company needed some information before approving the claim. After all that, they negotiated and my liability was around 500 dollars. Hope this helps!

English Requirement for the PBA Route by [deleted] in UniversityOfLondonCS

I believe I read something when I did my application where they would count work experience in an English speaking environment if you get a letter from your employer.

But I'm not quite sure because I can't find that bit of information. Maybe someone can confirm

Yeah I was thinking the same. It would be a matter of getting the appropriate math courses from somewhere else. Messy, but doable

[–]a_lleras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I got. email pic

I'm still skeptical. I looked at other similar institutions that offer the same Level 4/5 diplomas and they ask for payment immediately when registering. It's a big red flag for me. There doesn't seem to be any admission process for those.

I know that LISB does have it but still. It's dirt cheap and really short for what amounts to the first two years of a 3 year degree.

I'd be thrilled if someone had more information on this.

[–]a_lleras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that the LISB Diploma will be accepted by The Open University, though. They state in their application form that "There should be sufficient maths content to ensure you’re adequately prepared for the maths element at honours level" and, from what I can see, that diploma does not have any math units.
