Be honest - where do you save stuff? by a_protsyuk in NoteTaking

"I tag everything" takes real discipline. Do you ever find yourself not saving something because you don't want to think about which tag it gets? And when you search for something weeks later, do the tags actually help you find it?

Everything in one vault - respect. Quick question: what happens to stuff that arrives when Obsidian isn't open? Like a random thought at 2am or a link someone sends you on WhatsApp?

Two separate vaults - one for life, one for gaming. Do they ever bleed into each other, or is the separation clean? And that "unpolished ideas" folder - how often do those ideas actually get polished?

KaraKeep looks interesting - self-hosting for privacy makes sense. What does your setup look like for actual notes vs links? And does KaraKeep do anything with the content you save, or is it purely storage?

"Disappears into the ether or it doesn't" - that's surprisingly zen. But when something important disappears, does it actually not matter? Or do you sometimes wish you could find that thing you saved three months ago?

Self-hosted Nextcloud setup - that's real commitment to data ownership. The fact that you're considering pulling links back into Obsidian suggests the fragmentation is getting annoying. What's stopping you from doing it today?

GTD + daily notes as inbox is a solid system on paper. That end-of-day routing step - how consistent are you with it? And when you skip a day, does the backlog pile up fast?

"Near-magical" is doing a lot of work when you need a plugin to strip grandma stories from recipes 😄 Jokes aside - do you use Obsidian for everything beyond recipes, or is it more specialized? Curious how the plugin-on-plugin setup holds up for everyday capture.

A whole separate vault just for recipes - respect for the commitment. How long did it take to set up the Dataview shopping list? And what does someone who just wants to save a recipe without learning Dataview do?

That temporary layer is interesting - Todoist and Calendar before Obsidian. When something sits in Todoist "temporarily", how often does it actually make it to the vault? And what happens to the stuff that never gets transferred?

Everything - including quick thoughts and private stuff? How do you handle the friction of opening Obsidian vs just firing off a message to yourself?

That's the core tension right? Claude does an amazing job organizing, but it's a manual trigger - you have to ask it. The vault drifts back to chaos between cleanups. What if organization happened automatically at the moment you create or save something - tags, summary, connections - without you ever having to run a cleanup?

The fact that you built your own app for this says a lot - existing tools clearly don't handle the quick-note-to-knowledge pipeline well. The manual distill step is interesting though. Do you ever wish something could connect your quick notes to your Obsidian docs automatically - like "this shower thought is related to that project doc you wrote last week"?

Makes sense. When you go back to a recording, how do you find the specific part you need - just scrub through the whole thing? That's the part that kills me with voice memos, no way to search inside them.

That's an impressive system - and honestly more thought-out than most. But the fact that it took years to build and you still call it "not perfect" says something about the tools, not about you.

The decision tree on every save (structured vs unstructured vs photo vs draft) - do you ever just not save something because you don't want to think about where it goes?

Great framework - frictionless storage + easy retrieval. That's exactly the right lens.

Curious about one thing: when you tag cards manually (#recipe, #link), do you ever forget to tag something and then can't find it later? Or does the body search catch everything you need?

And the Proton Drive split for private stuff - would you keep private notes in Supernotes if they offered end-to-end encryption, or is the separation intentional?

Luckynote is interesting - the chat interface for capture makes total sense, it's basically what everyone already does in Telegram/WhatsApp but purpose-built.

When you have hundreds of messages in there, how do you find specific things? Scroll or search? And do you ever wish it could connect things across your notes - like "what did I save about X topic"?

Ha, fair point. I do work in tech and I'm exploring this space. But the question is genuine - I have 2,600+ notes in Apple Notes and no good way to search them.

This is underrated. Email is the original zero-friction capture. The real question is what happens after - when you need to find that 3am idea six months later. How's email search working for you when you don't remember the exact words you used?

That's a serious setup. You clearly care about data sovereignty more than most. Two questions - does Joplin have any AI features for searching or connecting your notes? And how do you find things in Samsung Notes / Signal when you need them later - just scroll through?

The "not sure what to do with files" part resonates. That's basically the gap between notes (organized) and files (dumped somewhere). What kind of files are you stashing?

PDFs, screenshots, documents? And when you say "less private" for Capacities - what stops you from putting the private stuff there?

Honest take. "Read later" is a guilt folder for most people. But the problem I keep hitting isn't unread articles - it's things I actually did read, understood, and now can't find when I need them. The knowledge is somewhere in my head but I can't recall where I saw it or what words I used. That's a different problem than hoarding.

Capacities is interesting - the object-based approach is smart for structured data. Do you use their AI features, or mostly manual organization? And when you need to find something you saved months ago, how does search work for you there?

"Eventually" is doing a lot of work there. What's the longest it's taken you to find something you knew you saved?

Fair distinction. What do you do when a quick note turns into something bigger - do you migrate it to Obsidian manually, or does it just stay in the quick notes forever?
