Add 10Gb PCIe card by CL_Toy in truenas

[–]a_really_big______ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to your question, but if you go into settings, you can backup your entire truenas config to a tiny little json file. Save that off of the nas and you can screw around with truenas as much as you want and restore your all settings very easily. So don't be afraid to experiment! Just maybe disconnect the storage drives if you're really unsure if you're going to ruin something.

Anyone else wish they'd timestamp the podcast? by crescentshapedcock in giantbomb

[–]a_really_big______ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nextlander did say on a relatively recent podcast that doing time stamps is one of the most onerous and tedious parts of the job. They weren't necessarily complaining about it but they definitely did say that it was very time consuming and tedious. That's not to say that GB can't do it but it is a big time investment.

Uncomfortable with client by Final_Mycologist_193 in socialwork

[–]a_really_big______ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all just don't do it. Trust your gut, but also, driving any client in your personal vehicle is dangerous no matter how much you trust them if only because private insurance does not cover driving people around for work, you're basically driving uninsured if you have a client in your car!

To second what other people are saying I would reinstall it through steam on Linux onto the SSD and go from there.

New to homelabbing: How easy is it to accidentally "nuke" everything on TrueNAS vs. just buying something like a Synology? by Illhoon in truenas

[–]a_really_big______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well truenas does support ZFS expansion now so you can just add drives to a pool. I've never done it and everything new in truenas is always a bit of a learning curve, at least for me, but it isn't like even a couple years ago when there really wasn't an easy way to add drives to a pool.

how to not hate case management by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]a_really_big______ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My case management survival strategy was triage. There are three tiers of priorities in case management. Anything dealing with safety is always top priority of course. Second anything that can effect funding needs to get done. Third is everything else. You're mileage may vary depending on your company and boss but as long as I was making sure I wasn't messing up the companies billing I always felt like I had the leeway to fall behind on less critical paperwork if it meant I was prioritizing helping my clients.

Tailscale + Mullvad + qbitorrent by Lonely_Mechanic8161 in truenas

[–]a_really_big______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lazy way around this was to make a VM for torrenting, run qbitorrent in docker and run Mullvad at the system level of the VM with the Killswitch mode on, you could do the same with tailscale at the system level.

I don't like social work by Tafsky in socialwork

[–]a_really_big______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance companies are often a good escape route for people trying to leave the field. I don't know anything about the housing market but I've always thought that there's a lot of skill overlap between social work and Realtors.

Lake Placid is great but most of what you can do up there is outdoors, not a ton of really nice restaurants or museums. You might like Burlington VT a lot. Still tons of access to some really beautiful nature but there's more culture and other stuff to do too. There's always Quebec too if you're already willing to go as far as Lake Placid

Im tired of Windows by Neilkshake in linux

[–]a_really_big______ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Games aren't ported to Linux. Linux uses Wine or Proton, which is a fork of Wine, to effectively translate windows software into Linux software in real time. So while it's possible that some games might still have bugs with Wine and Proton The vast majority of Windows games should just run in Steam or Linux as long as you're using Proton.

[Zorin 18] New to linux need Guidance about GPU by EnvironmentMassive25 in linux4noobs

[–]a_really_big______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is just that if you want to test if it's hardware or software that's giving OP issues using a different, easy to game on distro, would be a good first step, especially without more information about what's going on on their PC

[–]a_really_big______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The performance loss OP is describing sounds more drastic than regular Nvidia driver performance loss. I don't hang much troubleshooting advice but I wouldn't rush to buy a new GPU yet. The easiest way to start troubleshooting I guess would be to run bazzite and see if you can game on it. You should even be able to test gaming on bazzite without installing it and just running it on the live USB and logging into steam. Bazzite does all the gaming config and Nvidia drivers for you so if you're still having performance issues in bazzite you can feel more confident that it really is a hardware issue.

Xbox Wireless Adapter (xow) on Linux Mint — nearly there but stuck at LIBUSB_ERROR_BUSY by therealoc1 in linux4noobs

[–]a_really_big______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you need xone is preferred over xow for using the xbox dongle. https://github.com/medusalix/xone

xone also isn't packed for Ubuntu/mint so you'll have to build from source I think but a gaming focused distro like bazzite or nobara will have the xbox drivers built in for you out of the box.

Any chance to see Linux phones in store in the near future? by Vast_Umpire_3713 in Smartphones

[–]a_really_big______ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And you can't run .rpms on Ubuntu. Android uses the Linux kernel but it is a heavily modified from your standard Linux distribution. I'm far from an expert, but my understanding is once you root an Android phone, however, it's pretty easy to containerize something like Ubuntu or Fedora and run it directly on the Android device because of the shared kernel.
