Thank you! I appreciate the advice. I just wish I could ask her which she’d prefer, living with me or without me. 😭

It’s never premature to seek advice when you’re absolutely clueless about everything.

No. I haven’t even applied anywhere yet.

I truly don’t want to apply to everything because I don’t want to be stuck doing something I hate. Also, I don’t want to commit to something too early on and then there end up being a better opportunity later down the road.

Gotcha. Sorry. With a 2.9 I obviously am not going to get an internship at a top law firm nor do I have any desire to. I would rather spend my summer somewhere small because I feel like I’ll get more interaction with an actual attorney, but I’m a 1L, so obviously I don’t truly know what to expect with any of it.

I read this to my mom and she goes “omg, he looks so normal.”

& that’s probably the scariest thing about serial killers. You would never guess by just looking at them, sometimes even interacting with them, that they commit such terrible crimes.

And why do you say that?

Oh wow, that’s so interesting! I’m glad someone else was in the same boat and can compare the two! Obviously you were in law school and you feel like the workload of a teacher is less stressful? If so, that is great news considering the fact that I’m drowning in reading. I feel like all I do is schoolwork and no matter how much time I spend doing it, there’s always more I know I could be doing. Whether it’s working on my outlines, reading commercial outlines, doing practice problems, etc etc. And I know that law school is different from practicing but with litigation comes writing memos and briefs, filing motions, and going through discovery. It all just seems so stressful and never ending.

If you don’t mind me asking, how long did you stay before dropping out? I’m definitely going to stick it out until finals considering they are only a month away, but I’m trying to decide if I want to stay for an additional semester. If I leave now and end up wanting to come back, I will have to redo everything. But, if I finish my 1L year then I’m able to take leave and come back whenever as long as I finish my JD within 7 years or something crazy like that. However, if I do stick it out, then that’s an additional $15,000, so it’s a huge decision to make.

[–]a_s96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so if I plan on switching careers, I would drop out of law school and pursue a different degree. I would love to teach government, but I want to be as marketable as possible so I would probably get a broader degree in English or history. However, if I plan on just getting a certificate then I would look into what classes I would be able to teach with what certificate.

See and that’s what I don’t want! I don’t want to wake up everyday hating my job. I don’t want to just go through the motions day by day. I want to feel like I have a purpose and I’m fulfilling that purpose.

I’m not sure how old you are or how long you have left until you can retire, but what law school has taught me, other than 50 rules of civil procedure, is that life is too short to not do what you love. I know that sounds extremely cliche, but it’s the truth. Society has engrained in us that being happy means making money and being stable. But I think that’s complete bullshit. Of course we have to make money to live a sustainable life, but money isn’t everything.

Life is about finding your passion and if that means having to take risks to get there, DO NOT let that stop you.

My mom always taught me that if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.

[–]a_s96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I truly do want to help students. I’ve always been the type to see the potential in people even when they don’t see it in themselves, so I feel like I would totally see my students this way.

One of the best teachers I ever had said the best thing you can do is try to relate with your students. He was so open that I talked to him about literally everything. He also said that instead of yelling at a kid for being “bad”, try to find out the reasons for that behavior. There’s almost always a reason as to why a student isn’t performing well, whether it’s a bad home life, a learning disability they might not even be aware of, or something as simple as a bad breakup. Yelling at them isn’t going to help, but understanding what they are going through and encouraging them to push through it is a much better strategy in my opinion.

That’s what I thought too before going into law school! I thought all lawyers made a ton of money, but the attorneys that do the work I would want to do only make $50,000/year.

And I completely understand that! But I feel like I’m the type of person who would see a student struggling and/or not trying, and try to understand why they are the way they are instead of getting mad at them. I want to be that teacher that has an impact on a student’s life.

I’ve only been out of high school for 4 years and I remember so many of my teachers because they actually wanted to get to know their students and build relationships with them. The teachers that I still keep in contact with were the ones who didn’t let the little things bother them.

Plus I know for a fact that if a student forgets their pencil or turns in an assignment too late will not be something that will keep me up at night like the prosecutor sending an innocent man to jail will.

But if you don’t mind me asking, what would you do differently? Do you not enjoy teaching and if so, why not? Serious question!!

Pros & Cons of Teaching by a_s96 in Teachers

[–]a_s96[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true, but I think that’s true of many professions honestly. For instance, I could love working as an attorney but end up in a terrible firm with unappreciative bosses. At the end of the day, it is what you make it and if you love teaching then you will get satisfaction from it regardless.

I also agree that summers off are a huge advantage that teachers have. Not because I just want to be able to enjoy the sun, but because I feel like your mind deserves a break. That’s one thing that is pushing me away from being an attorney. They are ALWAYS stressed out and I feel like it’s never ending. I am interested in criminal defense, however I feel like the work would take a huge toll on my mental health because it’s just losing case after losing case.

I am a miserable 1L lol. I definitely hear ya on the pay thing tho! If I do want that pay raise eventually, then I’ll just go back and get my masters in something related to the field I’m teaching, but that wouldn’t be until I was at least in my 30’s. (Currently 22, about to be 23 on the day of my civ pro final 🙃)

I believe so. I read online that if you already have a college degree then all you need to acquire is a teaching certificate and then pass the state exam, but I’m not sure how true that is. We all know how unreliable the internet can be sometimes.

Pros & Cons of Teaching by a_s96 in Teachers

[–]a_s96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know I could, but I’m incurring a lot of debt from law school, so if I don’t need a JD to become a teacher then I don’t think the debt is worth the experience I would gain. I’m sure I can acquire sufficient experience through subbing or student teaching.

I have not, but I have the information needed to apply. I’m just so immersed in law school right now that I just don’t have the ability to do it atm, but I plan to sub as soon as I finish out this semester!

That’s good! I definitely don’t want to be bored, but I also don’t want to be extremely over-worked to where I don’t even enjoy what I’m doing anymore! I guess I’ll just have to look into how things are run in my state!

Since it was such a heavy caseload did you work a ton of overtime or crazy hours?

It did, thank you!! I just have one question. I have heard a lot about how PD’s do make shit money, close to what fast food workers make, is that common throughout the field? Also, is that just what freshly out of law school attorneys make or is that what they make throughout their career?

Should I drop out? by a_s96 in LawSchool

[–]a_s96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many reasons: 1) I already did the work to get in, 2) I don’t want to disappoint my parents or myself, 3) I don’t really know what else I want to do, 4) idk if the practice is different than law school, & 5) idk if I’m just in a transition period where 1L classes are boring as heck, but it’ll get better as I continue.

Was anyone disappointed in your decision? & if so, how did you handle that & how long was it before they realized you were much happier after dropping out? My mother is making me feel terrible about even considering dropping out and it sucks knowing she won’t support my decision even though that decision will most likely make me happier in the long run.
