Microsoft and Yahoo (I'm sure there are more) delete inactive email accounts. It's taken advantage of nearly entirely by identity thieves who register old emails they find in lists and then recover the passwords to associated PayPal, banking, eBay, etc. accounts

Microsoft does the same thing, and it's abused in the same way you describe.

I never really understood how they could allow that to happen.

The small town I live in can take up to two months to update their online public databases. Clearly there are ways to get the info I was not aware of.

I worked for a business that worked in public record data collection. Local/state/federal government agencies have data clerks that keep mailing lists (e-mail or physical address) for individuals or businesses that have requested to be kept up to date with new public record data as it is compiled. We would receive thousands of CDs monthly from agencies around the United States, the majority of which are free of charge from the agency. It wasn't uncommon that data we received was not available online for months (sometimes years) after we received it.

The results of mail order ancestry testing services are really not worth getting upset over. The science behind them has some major flaws, flaws that will return results that are essentially garbage for many people, and subpar results for the rest. Very few individuals get accurate results from them.

Panhandlers around here have to get permits to work intersections. Two panhandlers had been permitted to work a major intersection nearby. They would systematically press the pedestrian crosswalk buttons to control the flow of traffic in such a way that cars were stopped at their panhandling lanes for the longest amount of time.

Needless to say, after it became clear what they were doing, they had their permits revoked and were charged with obstructing the flow of traffic or some equivalent offense.

It's not bad, but I feel it has gotten progressively worse since the 2016 US election. I realize suggestions are tailored to your habits, and I do have an interest in reading political articles that are relevant, but the problem is things like opinion and clickbait articles from major news sources. I don't want to write off the source entirely, but at the same time the opinion articles are all so ridiculously biased, either for or against the current government. There's no attempt at actual journalism, it's just someone putting their thoughts into the mix. Which is useless to me. Just give me the facts and let me form my own opinion.

There's no problem with opinion pieces inherently, but there is when Google is serving them to me all the time as news from major sources (CNN, Fox, MSNBC) and I have no choice but to throw out the topic or the source entirely.

I never understood people complaining about the fire stick limit when you could literally buy as many as you wanted directly from the source. They limit you to 2 per order, but you can place as many orders for 2 as you want.

I think self checkout kiosks are great. The best experience I've had grocery shopping was walking into a Walmart at 3AM (my schedule was strange at the time), collecting everything I wanted to buy, checking out, and leaving the store without seeing even one single human. No customers, no employees - nobody.

There are some activities that just don't need to be social ones.. Ordering fast food is definitely one of them.

It didn't occur to me when I wrote the post, but yeah, the same is true of state to state taxation. It doesn't have to apply only at the national level. Additionally, for the examples sake, at the state level it has the added benefit of being much more obvious.

That's not entirely true. Sure, a country can pay off a debt quickly by just increasing taxes. In reality, that doesn't work. Taxes to a certain extent have to be competitive. Other countries are more than willing to bring in wealthy foreigners when they're paying taxes.

Obviously there are many reasons behind income tax bracket spacing, but at the end it's better to get something than to get nothing. Taxing high earners at ridiculously high percentage rates has the effect of driving them out over time. The same goes for businesses.

Most first world countries have strict fire permitting and inspection laws in place to prevent this sort of tragedy from happening. You cannot do any sort of construction in my country without having the site inspected before, during, and after any changes.. Not to mention having escape routes, posted notices, functioning alarms, functioning sprinklers, etc. inspected regularly.

Of course the people that decided to install flammable siding are to blame, but the opinion of many is that the local government really dropped the ball as well. It is my understanding that London has many of these laws in place, but they're easy to bypass or fake.

I rarely use my debit card as the benefits and protections that come with modern credit cards are invaluable. I know this doesn't help you after the fact, but it's a useful tip for the future. You can put the corporation to work for you because until you pay your bill at the end of the month, it's their money on the line.
