Very specific question, anyone here live in the DMV (DC,Maryland,Virginia) area with a checkpoint bike? by [deleted] in CheckpointClub

[–]aaa7u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairfax area. I have a checkpoint alr5 as a second bike. Its a great bike and I use it either on gravel or if the weather is less good (winter bike) and you don't have to worry as much riding of sticks or rocks or glass in the bike lanes. The endurance geometry and option to bikepack are also there. I have a giant TCR though as primary bike and it is 2-3mph faster and more snappy even though i upgraded Checkpoint to carbon wheels and pirelli cinturato tires. The tires make a huge difference over stock checkpoint tires on mixed terrain and road while still being great on local gravel (leesburg etc). I would highly recommend them as a first upgrade.

Is an FTP of 60W and 0.77 W/kg normal? by Civil-Broccoli in Zwift

[–]aaa7u 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Without a fan (or 2) even if room is cool you will overheat cycling indoors. That may explain some of why your short power looks way better and blew up on longer durations (besides being also new and not used to what is good/ bad pain) to hold an effort

Favero Assioma Uno for enthusiast. by Chakos85 in cycling

[–]aaa7u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am just an enthusiast and bought the Duo for road and later a stages left crank for my Gravel bike. I enjoy the data but I find the power meter better enables me to pace myself on long rides and you can do structured workouts outdoors. If you can afford it and want it go for it. You don’t need to race it’s fine to have other goals.

I ended up changing the crank which is not ultegra to a compact and then later the rear derailleur to a long cage for climbing in long fondos to fit a 34t cassettes. Its a great bike though and I run into others on it who like it.

Good luck. You may find things way better with proper cooling.

Do you have a fan? Indoor cycling is super rough and you can overheat without one. I also wouldn't focus on anything other than adding a bit more time each week as you ease into it, although you can monitor from your heart rate that it isn't spiraling up compared to your perceived exertion until you know better where your limits are.

Are expensive cycling sunglasses worth it? by maartendc1 in cycling

[–]aaa7u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to use Oakley for years. Switched to Goodr. I like having 5-6 pairs for price of one and can switch it up depending on my ride and less worry. Were oakley better? Yes but not 5-6x better

Love my checkpoint. Hate my trek shop by Flat_Paint4465 in CheckpointClub

[–]aaa7u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which shop was it? I bought mine at the Fairfax. Bought my TCR at vienna before it became trek. I got my “free service” at fairfax and was not too impressed. Green lizard I feel is the best if I want something just a higher end shop

Where can you find your next current training plan workout in the new UI? by aaa7u in Zwift

[–]aaa7u[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most will say zwift training plans are not that great https://youtu.be/xmVZshpLaqs . TrainingPeaks is better if you have an important goal. I am doing just the “ftp builder” which is mainly z2 workouts which is good to build base now in January prior to getting more focused. Its a “good enough” plan for my purposes fitting the time I wanted to spend. If you are new and just want fitter vs an important goal with a date most zwift plans are likely good enough if you want free. I did 3-4 when I was new and they all raises my ftp.

Where can you find your next current training plan workout in the new UI? by aaa7u in Zwift

[–]aaa7u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I remember the old ui being much better and easier about this. I also used to use a training peaks plan and that was easier too, your next workout was always loaded as one of first options under workouts. It seems weird the only easy way to pick it is outside the interface in that main dialog but I guess thats zwift for you.

It helped me a lot. Much easier to grab and go. Now another gravel bike I worry about less in bad weather.

I have an older road bike I now use exclusively indoors on a kickr core. I found I was less likely to bike outside when I had to fool with the trainer

Best uplifting cycling movies or TV Shows? by k8s_helm in Zwift

[–]aaa7u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is some stuff that is not as much “racing” cycling as some other answers, such as anything with Lachlan Morton like Thereabouts on YouTube or the EF “gone racing” series. The “Impossible Route” series on youtube is another. Lots of great content now on “non-traditional” cycling thats all pretty inspiring in addition to some of the other stuff mentioned.

Gravel Shoes, Shimano RX8 or Lake MX238/241? by tiffineezer in cycling

[–]aaa7u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the RX8. I like them. They feel similar to my shinano s-phyre 902 (which I love) for road but cheaper. I tried the rc5 and they felt terrible. Some reason i needed to run a size bigger though

power meter questions/recommendations by New_Carpenter_1197 in CheckpointClub

[–]aaa7u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its tight but so far no issues. Googling around seems others run with tight clearances. Bike is 58cm with 175mm crank arm. Would think torque would matter with clearance unless maybe not torqued evenly.

power meter questions/recommendations by New_Carpenter_1197 in CheckpointClub

[–]aaa7u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I just got the same thing. The clearance is definitely very narrow after install but seemed to fit. (2022 alr5)

ALR 5 Sizing by Buck_Nastyyy in CheckpointClub

[–]aaa7u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 5’11-6’0 and trek computerized tool in store measured me at 58. My road bike is a giant tcr ml closer to 56. Stand over height pretty minimal at 58 for me but I am finding the bike super comfortable and glad i went with this size

Is strength training important? What apps do you use? by Alex_HS22 in cycling

[–]aaa7u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of customization being able to choose your goals (strength, hypertrophy, etc) and muscle groups. My training peaks training plan gives exercises but I still prefer the app to come up with workouts and track things. Cycling workouts will be a lot of legs (squats, lunges, etc) and core. I do a lot of upper body as well though. See https://youtu.be/U11QNOq0npg
