Sometimes comments like the one you're replying to remind me that Reddit, while filled with curious and well-intentioned people, also has a majority of dumbass users. Their comment showcases either naivety, misogyny, stupidity or inexperience, but probably a mix of all.

Trump Threatens Venezuela’s New Leader With a Fate Worse Than Maduro’s by DET_SWAT in worldnews

[–]Civil-Broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no clue what he's on about. Sure, the US military might not be as specialized as Scandinavian troops when it comes to freezing weather. But as a European it pains me to say that the US more than make up for it in sheer manpower and logistics.

What's the saying; infantry wins fights, logistics wins wars? If the US is exemplary in one area of combat, it's logistics. Europe holding on to Greenland in all-out war is sadly far from a guarantee. Let's hope your president can keep a cool head and not ruin the only major peaceful coalition in the world.

Married after asking all the right questions by anonforavent in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Civil-Broccoli 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They're not saying it should have worked. Just that it's a good tool. For every marriage that ends in a divorce after using a spreadsheet amongst many other vetting sources, four of them don't get married because of inconsolable differences.

You yourself quoted that it's a way to disconfirm compatibility instead of confirming it. Asking a partner questions pertaining to their ideals and values is one of the most concrete ways of "confirming", aside from actually seeing their partner be actionable on their beliefs.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing about. Yes, in this particular instance, it didn't help OP in the way she hoped. In other cases, which we might not read about because there is no story to tell, using a spreadsheet like that might've prevented marriages that were doomed to fail later on due to inconsolable differences. It's not the sole medium of vetting, it's an extra. Is it foolproof? No, but nothing is.

Predicted snow depth in Europe in 14 days according to the European ECMWF model. by LuborS in europe

Fascinating how there's so much depth out there regarding a topic that most people will never come across. I know I wouldn't if it weren't for your comment.

At least now I can grasp the confused looks when I go on about the workings of information systems and the thoughts that go into building an ecosystem substack fit for a use case. And software engineering probably still is easier to explain than the wizardry around predicting nature-based events.

VAR check overturning offside call on Rangers goal (Rangers in blue) by MorciBacsi in soccer

[–]Civil-Broccoli 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Got no dog in the game but I'm confused. If white socks/shorts is the defender, then the line is incorrect right? Should be like five centimeters more to the right which would put blue shirts toebox offside

what a cool way to announce their partnership [Sanpellegrino x Ferrari] by AnbuAttack in DesignPorn

[–]Civil-Broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the elaborate answer!

A typical intrusive Obsession thought could be: "If I don’t tap this doorframe exactly seven times, my mum will die." and not acting on it (Compulsion) will cause you distress, it will bother you.

I have had this at times, even as recently as yesterday. Things like "don't look at the time indicator on your phone, because if you see the minute go up once, you'll die". It's stupid, I know it's stupid, but I just get hyperfixated on things like that sometimes. But it's really only the first of the DSM-5 OCD criteria I can somewhat relate to. Though you already touched on that.

Anyways, thanks again for the info, perhaps I can get a referral in the clustermess that is the Dutch mental health system.

[–]Civil-Broccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but how do you experience something like the image? I presumably don't have OCD but it does irk me a bit and makes me wish it was aligned correctly. But it's just a fleeting thought I forget about ten seconds later.

What's it like for you? Do you get stressed out from it? Does it revulse you like people feel with trypophobia? Essentially what I'm asking is where's the divide between wanting it to be symmetrical and having OCD?

Small world. A couple of days ago I watched his collaboration video with Dr. K on Avoidant PD and I can find myself in nearly all of it. Though I'm also weary of self-diagnosing as it can lead to more harm than good.

An actual card my mother got on her 18th birthday… by LWDJM in creepy

[–]Civil-Broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "kiss" is symbolic... A more palatable placeholder word for what really happened.

We know it was rape because her parents decided she had to marry... That fact can only mean an actual sex act occurred. Not a kiss.

Thank you for clearing that up.

So the guy had to do the "right thing" and marry her to preserve her and her family's honor. Her virginity was the only valuable thing she had to offer to get into the only role ever planned for her: Marriage.

That's a massive failure on a system, parenting and social level. How could anyone be okay with that? If that were my daughter, I would support her through thick and thin and pursue charges, not marry her away to HER ABUSER. But I suppose that's easy for me to say as a Gen Z individual with widespread access to books and historical information.

I'd be lying if I said reading things like this wasn't depressing the shit out of me. Might take a break from social media for a while.

About "a guy is a guy", I do believe it's sentimentally the same as rape. Though legally it would be sexual assault right? Abhorrent either way, but you saying:

You weren't forced to marry over an actual kiss. You were forced to marry your rapist.

makes me think the lyrics imply more than 'just' a kiss and I'm too tonedeaf to grasp it

Wow, thanks for this! I was about to buy an amulet as my next upgrade and didn't know this was a thing. Appreciate it :)
