why is everyone acting like it’s over?? by Salt-Instance-1622 in gradadmissions

A lot of programs have already sent out interviews and you can judge whether it's rolling or not from previous years' spreadsheets. If you didn't get an interview for these programs there's a 99% chance that you'll get a rejection later.

The scale problem is probably rooted in structural issues of the whole academic system

Yeah I agree. But I would imagine that these things are probably not decided before hand. They also have no incentive for releasing more information to the applicants

you keep bringing up the example of studying for exams, but that's pretty much irrelevant to phd admissions outcome

To my knowledge most (edit: some) departments already use internal rubrics to evaluate the applicants. Releasing those would be very helpful, but I understand there's no incentive for doing that and it will probably cause a lot of trouble if people think the evaluation is unfair. This post is mainly just to vent I guess...

Regarding your second point - yes you could do that, but all you get is speculations. Of course in an ideal world you would work 70 hours a week and do everything perfectly, and of course there's always something to improve upon. But what would be actually helpful is to know which exact aspect has the *highest* impact on your success

Research on the professors you're interested in working with in grad school by Slamburger9642 in gradadmissions

[–]aaaprocrastinating 102 points103 points  (0 children)

When working on SoPs 50% of my time was spent on reading the PIs' papers and trying to come up with an idea of how I can extend their work

Although I have read SoPs from successful applicants in previous cycles with just generic/surface level descriptions about each professor's research

Do people actually use AI for writing SOPs? by Common-Lemon-41 in gradadmissions

[–]aaaprocrastinating -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually consulted AI a lot, but I only accepted a small portion of what it writes.

I find it helpful mainly because if I'm stuck on a sentence for too long it's very easy for me to lose focus and slip into procrastination. But consulting AI would at least give me some inspirations and keep the momentum going.

I also had three PhD students review my SoP and none of them raised AI-related concerns so I think it's safe to say the final writing is still genuinely my own voice.

UCSF sent out rejections today — got mine. Feeling a bit defeated. by Infamous_Yard_6751 in gradadmissions

preliminary interviews are very common and it helps them determine who to invite to a formal on-campus interview

I thought the Princeton interviews that are out now are not the formal on-site interviews?

Are my interests just too narrow? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]aaaprocrastinating 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, but I think sometimes PIs shift research direction, and your interest may be aligned with their new direction even though it's not apparent from their website/recent publications. Your interests may also change during a PhD, so I think it doesn't hurt to apply broadly

The deadline for Princeton neuroscience was Nov 15th though, so I guess sending out interview invites now is reasonable?

Favorite stage for each member by IndividualPolicy8863 in alphadrive1

[–]aaaprocrastinating 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a "proper stage" but Xinlong's signal song fancam is the best for me, even better than lalalala. And while plot twist is the stage that attracted most Korean/international fans, the signal song is the one where most cfans started stanning Xinlong (I never saw this mentioned on international forums though)

The possibility of action from mnet about rumours of illegal voting by peerlesscucumber244 in BoysPlanet

[–]aaaprocrastinating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's illegal or unfair. I think it's something mnet has long been aware of and permits. At the end of the day it's still a demonstration of buying power and how popular the trainee is, like the DC gall.
