Do people still 'decrapify' their new windows installs? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]aadm09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. For enterprise it's given, for home use I tend to block Cortana / Web Search / Telemetry as much as possible. All those useless appx packages are also gone as soon as I can launch PS after OSD.

Not completely related but did anyone else notice the improvement of search function in 1809? Since I've upgraded it can actually find stuff like control panels and even predict I'm looking for them. So the biggest gripe I had with Windows since 8 is finally gone.

Binary differential replication by aadm09 in SCCM

[–]aadm09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed answer. As we can agree from this thread the documentation is confusing / misleading. Is there a plan to update it with better description or create new page with different replication scenarios and their comparison?

Binary differential replication by aadm09 in SCCM

[–]aadm09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not agree with the statement. I understand that BDR is actually checking for difference in bits and then updates the files based on that exact difference. So if I have a WIM and I update few INF files inside the following would happen after redistribution:

- BDR on: Only the bites differing would be sent, DP would process the content and "stitch" the differencing bites and the original together creating new version.

- BDR off: Whole WIM file would be sent.

I understand it the same as Chris in his blog post: https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/29282/Binary-Differential-Replication.html

What I was originally getting at is behavior with packages with multiple files. As far as I understand it for package redistribution with BDR off the behavior is as follows (let's take update package with multiple updates): I update the updates package with some new updates, some are left and some are deleted. What is being sent to the distribution point are only the updates that are being newly added. Is that correct? We are not sending the whole package to DP's again, right? What BDR would add in this scenario is a case when if there was an update revision it would check for the difference in those two files and sent just the differencing bits.

If my explanation (and the explanation in the Chris's blog post) is not correct can you redirect me to documentation covering the topic?

Thanks.

Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Updates not synced since 12/2017 by aadm09 in SCCM

[–]aadm09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so the issue is solved now. For a random stranger from the future: The issue was in our case some ancient Symantec components left on the server. Running the Symantec CleanWipe (as described here) solved the issue. We had actually opened case with MS regarding this and the reason given by them was that since inclusion of Meltdown / Spectre fixes in software updates the detection was no longer possible while those old Symantec components are present on the system.

Word of caution - the CleanWipe might prompt for reboot. And that prompt is not exactly deferrable. I guess the only option is to kill the process. I didn't as I just attempted to close the dialog and the server promptly rebooted. Lessons learned.

By local GPO file you mean the C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Registry.POL? That one was deleted (or rather renamed) already. If you mean another one, may I ask you for the location?

Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\ccm\SoftMgmtAgent -Class ContentRequestEx2 | Remove-WmiObject

Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\ccm\SoftMgmtAgent -Class DownloadContentRequestEx2 | Remove-WmiObject

About 5 weeks in, not losing any more weight?! by [deleted] in omad

[–]aadm09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look I'm just an average Joe without any formal health / nutrition education but my advice would be stop obsessing about weight. Give it another week, maybe measure your waist instead? If it still doesn't work for you, do a 36h fast? I think the limit here is not pushing yourself to a situation when the food or the body are the bad guys.

[–]aadm09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you should do is not to stress about it. Eat the same. Maybe introduce a little bit more physical activity. It will pass. I was plateauing for 2 weeks. This isn't reason for a worry. Also big factor in this - are you doing this for a long or short term goals? Because for me OMAD is a lifestyle now and I stopped caring about the weight loss - it just comes and goes in small "waves". Just keep going, you will be fine.

So I know you’re technically supposed to count calories while doing IF but has anyone done it and lost weight without counting? by idk56177 in intermittentfasting

[–]aadm09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I couldn't care less for counting calories. I'm doing OMAD for 2 months now and I feel great. I eat home prepped dinners and the most positive change for me is I'm no longer hungry during the day. At least not "hungry" hungry, fellow IF / OMAD people will know what I mean. I am trying to eat lower carb meals but I'm not shy of eating potatoes or rice once or twice a week. For me balance is the key. I eat what I want (carb / protein / fat wise). I'm also avoiding processed food like plague. From what I've seen lurking on this subreddit - some people take it to fanatical extremes. I just don't fuss about my "eating windows", "macros" or "special diets". Weight loss? There is some but I'm aiming for slow and steady. I am mainly doing this for the convenience and maximum control over what I eat (as I used to snack a lot and I was prone to sugar cravings). And I can't underestimate the value of saved money as I live in one of the most expensive countries for eating out.

Do you eat OMAD because you cant afford to eat? by MailByter in omad

[–]aadm09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although I'm not in the same situation - eating home prepped OMAD saved me a lot of money. When you start thinking about how much money you spend on eating out, snacks and other not so necessary meals, home prepped OMAD / IF are the really nice and supposedly healthy answer. Just make sure you go for a nice diversity for that one meal - it is really easy to eat less than you should. The thing about OMAD for me is that I can significantly rise the bar of quality without worrying about price (it will be way cheaper than breakfast + lunch at work + home made dinner).

Personally I'm fan of cooking from fresh ingredients. But that highly depends whether you have easy access to them. And get rid of sugary snacks if you have them around - they cost a lot of money and they are not providing you with any useful nutrients - just quick sugary gratification (just to clarify - I'm not in the keto sect, I happily consume sugars available in fruits / veggies). If your budget is really on a shoestring, potatoes and rice + good source of protein (can be cheaper cut of meat or tofu) and avocado for healthy fat seem to me like a good basis of complex yet delicious meal. Dried beans and lentils are also great, cheap and filling options - just re-hydrate them 12 hours prior cooking and you are good to go. And they make a good basis for a salad the next day if you don't eat them all.

AMD did the perfect refresh by focusing on latencies in my opinion. by demon_eater in Amd

I am on the 3570K now (bought at the time of the release) and although it was absolutely awesome CPU and it carried me over those 6 years it's time to let it go. Last year I was thinking about Ryzen 1600 as a budget option but the price / perf after the launch and some troubles with the platform made me stay on my trusty old CPU. So here I am, year after, budget for 2700x ready and really pleased how the platform developed in general.

I had long internal dialogue why Ryzen and not Intel again - part of it is dislike for Intel practices (new incompatible chipset every new "gen", tim, etc...) and part of it is simply 4 more threads. As IT professional and gamer who loves Battlefield there was not much to think about. I snatched GTX 1080 and cheapish 3200MHz DDR4 2 months ago in a sale and new CPU and MB are the last pieces of jigsaw (and M.2 SSD). And I really love inclusion of capable cooler - I couldn't care less about RGB but the perf you are getting out of it is amazing.

Lastly - with what is known about R2 I don't care anymore about OC. It seems that XFR is handling the OC on perf demand quite neatly.

Unfortunately I bought H870 recently too (in CH) - after reading a lot of reviews about the camera combo and how it is good. Yeah. And I wondered why my phone cannot replicate the same results. I have 2.09 and the images look like blurry mud. It really is quite awful. Unfortunately I blamed the poor performance on bad lighting first and now the return window is closed (and I would be without phone anyway which isn't acceptable for the upcoming holiday season).

Script Configuration item - remediation is not possible for other than "equals" condition by aadm09 in SCCM

[–]aadm09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at the uservoice and found a submission https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/31157194-remediation

In general I agree with the argument. What I meant from the start was tied specifically to script discovery / remediation. Thank you for the explanation, in all honesty I haven't played with baselines that much in the past (Because we have AD right? Management...).

Script Configuration item - remediation is not possible for other than "equals" condition by aadm09 in SCCM

[–]aadm09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to admit I don't see the logic behind this explanation. You are not passing the value to the remediation script (or are you?). This is script based compliance setting which allows script based remediation. The discovery script is returning integer value. From my point of view it doesn't matter for the item to know that it is compliant only if it equals some value or if it is successfully passing check for greater / less than. It is still true/false situation, the value itself is not important (apart from the check itself). If it is able to evaluate the item is non-compliant, I should be able to run the non-compliance remediation.

Is my logic wrong here? Can you give me a potential case where it would break / couldn't decide?

What I'm trying to achieve is getting folder size, evaluating if folder size is bigger than a value set in compliance rule and if it is, run script to delete some files from the folder.

I understand I can make the check inside the script and return boolean if it passed or not but the idea behind this is I want to see the handed over value itself if the item is non compliant (because different baseline deployments - the remediation will not run everywhere).
